Social Networking is addictive and time consuming!

March 16, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday I had big plans. I wrote up posts for several of my sites and I was hoping that in the afternoon we’d go to the beach for the first time with our puppy since the weather was above freezing.

Well that didn’t happen.

Chris got busy removing the last of the snow that we had in our driveway. Our driveway is long and narrow and we can only park in the very front part of it because it’s so narrow. So no – during that big snow storm I didn’t shovel the whole driveway. So .. since it was above zero and the snow was beginning to melt Chris moved it around and got the driveway cleared.

Then he was tired.

The other thing I was going to do was to manually update all of my sites on Feverishthoughts.com to the latest and greatest version of WP.

I didn’t do that either.

Instead I got an invitation to join a new community group on Bumpzee.com and along with joining the new group I ended up adding a lot of new contacts to my account. I started by looking at members who’d visited my sites or profile recently, adding them if I liked their sites and then I looked at their lists of friends to see if I knew any of the bloggers that they’d added as contacts. I did something similar on Blogcatalog a few weeks ago too.

I literally spent hours on Bumpzee last night! It’s amazing to realize how many bloggers I know or who I was at least familiar with in some way. It was kind of addictive once I got started. If this keeps up they’re going to have to make something like a drug rehabilitation center for Bloggers, except of course it would be perhaps a Social Media Rehab.

Hopefully today I’ll begin upgrading my blogs, well that is if I can stay away from Bumpzee after adding all those bloggers as contacts!

Promoting your site in the real world

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve been trying to think of a way to promote my sites when I’m not online.

Last November when I went to the Vegas blogging conventions a lot of people had made up business cards and some had even made up created little gifts to hand out with their logo and site address on them.

I’d thought of making up some cards before I went but honestly I was feeling so sick as I began to prepare for my trip that I just didn’t get around to it.

I’ve been thinking of making up some logo pens or something that I could hand out. Business cards too of course, but I think pens are good too because everyone needs a pen and if the pen them happen to be using has your logo and site address on it they might remember to visit your site right?

Have you come up with any cool ideas to promote your site offline?

Finally upgrading my WP sites and their plugins!

March 7, 2008 by Tricia

Over the last few days I’ve spent a good portion of my time updating all of my blogs. All of the new ones – the hush hush ones – have been updated to WP 2.3.3. It was easy to do because I was able to use Fantasico in my web hosting C-Panel to do it.

Now I have to update all of the blogs on this domain! Argh … I’ve moved those blogs to new web hosts twice in the last year and the last time was a manual update so this time round all the blogs will have to be manual updated too. It’s ok to do one or two manually, but when you have seven or eight that need to be upgraded manually it’s a pain in the butt! By the time I’m done I’ll be the WordPress upgrading queen! (17 blogs later!)

I’d also been having trouble on all my blogs when I’d try to save or publish a new post. A few months ago I had some kind of conflict occur when I upgraded my bad behavior plugin and the Google Sitemaps plugin on the same day. Ever since then I’d always get an error message when I saved or published a post. The posts were published but I’d have to check to be sure. It was a pain! I didn’t realize it but it was also messing up the do follow tags on my sites too. So there was a conflict between three plugins!

Luckily I discovered that there was yet another new Bad Behavior plugin update as well as a new Google XML sitemaps plugin. I updated those two plugins and refreshed my permalinks and TADA everything works right again!

Now I just hope that I don’t have any problems with my wordpress themes when I upgrade the sites on Feverishthoughts.com to the most recent WP upgrade. I think all my blogs on this domain are using 2.2.1 so it’ll be a big upgrade. If you drop by and notice that one of my feverishthoughts blogs is sporting a new very plain bare bones theme then you’ll know something strange happened when I updated the platform. It will only be temporary.

Once all that is done I can get back to work on the new blogs. One is a home and garden blog that will discuss mostly home type topics (my gardening blog will go back to mainly gardening!) such as decor, interior decorating, great recipes, tips for around the home and so on. The other blog is a shopping blog where I’ll talk about fashion trends, cosmetics, new home decor designs – who knows I’m sure I’ll even talk about platform beds on one or both!

Working on those two sites has inspired me again. I’m full of ideas and of course every time I find something cool to write about I also want to go out and buy it. I’ll be unveiling these new blogs shortly and I really hope that you like them. I’m trying to keep it fun, interesting and of course full of helpful information.

Have any of you updated your sites recently? Did it go well?

Anyone start any new blogs too? What is your new blog about? Are you being re-inspired as well?

Do you hate popups as much as I do?

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

I mostly use firefox these days when I’m working on my sites or visiting websites on the internet. I have the popup blocker turned on and I only allow a few sites to give me popups simply because the only way to get the sites to work is to allow popups.

However, lately I’ve found a number of sites that are some how able to bypass the browsers popup blocker controls. Several sites I visited yesterday ended up automatically giving me popup ads.

I hate that!

Seriously, if you’re site works in such a way that you occasionally need to send a visitor to another page while they are doing something on one page – for example registering for the site or for a contest and the reader is supposed to agree to the terms of service or contest rules – don’t make it a popup. Let the link take the visitor to another tab or window or at least give them a choice of whether the link should popup or take them to a new tab.

As for popup ads? Get rid of them! If you want ads for your site tastefully place them in your sidebar or fit them in your post. Honestly. I never ever click on popup ads and I will not ever click on a popup ad. Ever!

I need to get back on track and get to work!

January 17, 2008 by Tricia

I think it’s time to get my act together again.

Ever since we got Midnight, our Labrador Retriever puppy, I’ve slowed down on blogging and that has unfortunately resulted in a drastically reduced income! Our spending has gone up since we got her too since we had to pay for oh, 6 vet bills since she’s been sick since the day we got her, and we also had to get doggy supplies (training crate, toys, puppy training classes, more toys) and so on.

It also doesn’t help that I feel quite ill most of the time. My Crohn’s has been acting up for close to three years and in the last few months it seems to be worse than ever.

Time to suck it up and get back to work no matter what.

I had a shocking reality check last night. I finally got on my desktop computer.

I hadn’t used that computer since around the end of December and I was probably only on it about four times that month in total. Since we got the puppy at the end of November I’ve spent most of my computer time on my laptop. The laptop is on the living room coffee table and it’s not easy to work on when the puppy is out and demanding attention, hence the big decrease in blog posts across all my sites. My husbands sites have been affected too as he’s barely making blog posts either.

Last night I got on my desktop computer to access our bank accounts in order to pay all of our bills. Yes, one or two were a little overdue. I was shocked to discover that I only had a little over $100 in my account! Ahhh! Many of our expenses are taken out of my account automatically. I knew my account was probably getting low, but I didn’t think it would be that low!

Luckily I had quite a bit of money in my Paypal account so I quickly set about transferring some funds to my bank account. Too bad the money won’t get to my account until sometime early next week! Chris and I also have accounts in another bank that we use mostly for savings and our RSPs so I accessed those accounts (not the RSP’s) and transferred some money to my main bank account. Hopefully that money will make it to my account by Friday.

I paid our bills using Chris’ bank account instead of mine as I usually do.

Sigh of relief. The bills are paid and we still have some money that we can access over the next day or two until all the funds I transferred from Paypal and my other account arrives in my main bank account. We’re ok.

We won’t be ok though if I don’t start working on my sites again like I used to! A few months ago when things were going very well and I was working hard to make money through blogging and my other sites I was making pretty good money. Enough that I was transferring money from my Paypal account weekly. I knew I’d slowed down quite a bit when the gap between money transfers went from once a week to once every three or four weeks.

I’ve got to try to get back into my old work habit. It won’t be easy with the puppy wanting my attention during all her waking hours, but I’ll try!

In the past I’d start out each day working on my desktop computer. I find that I get more work done there than when I’m using the laptop. The laptop makes me lazy. I can lie on my side on the couch or prop the computer on my legs as I watch TV. Work slows down. A lot! Now with the puppy wanting to play ball or jumping in my lap to get me to pull on her squeaky toy working on the laptop is almost impossible too. Even checking email as it comes in takes forever.

Before she arrived in my life I’d work during the day on the desktop computer. My husband was at work and I’d could get my work done in peace. I’d write up posts to be saved as drafts or to be published right away throughout the day. I’d often still have some work to do in the evenings, but I could do it at a slower more relaxed pace on the laptop while my husband and I spent some time together. If I had a bad day due to my Crohn’s that was usually ok as I had posts stored up to use on my off days.

We have a training crate for our puppy. She has a nap or two in it during the day and sleeps in it at night. I think that in order for me to get more work done she’s going to have to spend a little more time in it each day. At least until she calms a little and is more willing to play with her toys on her own.

I guess having the puppy around demanding my attention is a bit like having a toddler in the home. How do those of you with young children or perhaps puppies as well cope with getting your computer work done at home?

I think what I’ll do is take care of the puppy early in the morning – feed her, walk her and have a short play time, then I’ll put her in her crate for a couple of hours and get to work on my desktop computer. She usually has her second meal of the day between noon and 1 pm then we go for a good walk and play in the house for a while. We’ll still do that, but now when she settles down in the late afternoon for a nap I’ll be sure to put her in her crate and get back on the desktop computer for some productive work time. When Chris is home in the evening he can play with her and I’ll keep working if I need to, then I’ll switch to the laptop to keep an eye on things as the evening wears on.

Maybe that will work.

I just need a little more structure in my day no matter how guilty I feel about ignoring the puppy for a couple hours here and there. Hey I’ve got to keep working if I want to keep a roof over our heads, the bills paid and have some extra cash so we can keep on having fun right?
