Want discount pricing when you book a cruise?

September 10, 2007 by Tricia

After my dinner boat cruise last weekend I think I can honestly say that I might actually take a holiday cruise one day.

You see, even though I’ve been around and even on water a good portion of my life it’s always been on smaller waterways. I’m a canoe enthusiast and I’ve canoed on creeks, rivers and small lakes. I’ve also white water rafted and white water canoed, but I’ve never spent much time in any type of boat on large bodies of water. Lake Ontario is huge. Some who’ve seen the photos I’ve occasionally included in my posts have thought that I live near the ocean.

It’s a lake, and last Saturday was my first time on a large boat on a large body of water. For some reason I’ve been nervous of being on large bodies of water. My sister has tried time and time again to get me to take a cruise with her. I’ve promised I would, and now after last weekends experience on a large boat I think I can do it.

Have you taken a holiday cruise?

I visited the Direct Line Cruises website and discovered that they list hundreds, if not thousands, of Discount Cruises from locations all over the world.

Direct Line Cruises has been in business for 12 years and in that time they’ve established themselves as a cruise-only agency that specializes in Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian cruises.

I’ve often thought that if I ever did go on a cruise I’d like to go on an Alaskan cruise. Of course I’d probably go on a Caribbean cruise as well.

One thing that I like about Direct Line Cruises, is that they just launched a brand new site on August 20th which gives site visitors the ability to book cruises directly from the site.

You can begin searching for a cruise to a particular destination right from the main page of the site, or you can click on one of the links or icons for specific types of cruises or destinations and go from there.

For example if I wanted to go on the 7 night Alaska round trip cruise from Vancouver, B.C with Norwegian Cruise Line, which is apparently has starting prices at only $599 per person, I could click on the Alaska Cruises icon on the main page of the site, find the cruise and cruise line that I’m most interested in in the listings, in this case the Norwegian Cruise Line Alaskan Cruise and then click the link for more information. From there I was taken to a page that lists all the different cruise departure dates and pricing for Interior, Oceanview, and Balcony cabins or even a Suite.

Once you select a departure date, for any of the various cruise listings of course, you’d just need to click on the “select” button to be taken to a page where you can learn more about the specific cruise and begin the booking process by listing how many people you’d be booking the cruise for and from there you’d be able to pick out exactly which type of cabin or room you’d like to stay in and so on. Of course you could also call the 1-800 number that’s listed at the top of each page to book your cruise with a Direct Line Cruises agent.

Near the bottom of the main page you’ll find listings for featured cruises and promotions, or you could simple visit the “Cruise Deals” page which is listed in the links in the left menu.

All cruises booked with Direct Line Cruises have free cruise cancellation protection policies. Of course there are specific conditions that apply to this free cancellation protection policy, but I’m pleased that they offer this service.

For a newbie to cruises like me the articles entitled “Cruise Facts” and “Cruise Lines” as well as the ability to get free cruise brochures are very helpful.

We’ll get me on a cruise at some point. I’m sure of it. Perhaps, if I become a cruise enthusiast, we could even set up a cruise for bloggers at some point?

In the meantime, if you’ve been thinking of taking a cruise vacation why not check out the Direct Line Cruises website and see if you can find any deals and or some fantastic cruise destinations?

Hiring a SEO company to market and promote your web site

September 8, 2007 by Tricia

As a former small business owner, and now a webmaster for more than 15 websites, I’ve learned quite a bit about marketing and promoting over the years.

Back when I had my jewelry trade business few companies had websites on the internet. Now, it’s almost unheard of to not have one.

The trouble is that not all business owners – big or small – are webmasters. Even if a business owner knows enough to create website for their company or hires a web designer to create their company page they must concentrate on the day to day aspects of their business, and as a result they don’t have time to learn all the ins and outs of promoting the online aspect of their company.

As I said, over the years I’ve learned quite a bit about promoting and marketing my websites online. I think I’m fairly good at it too, but now that I have so many sites to manage it’s getting harder and harder for me continue to promote my sites. Building the sites and creating content takes up the majority of my time.

I know several website owners, bloggers and even small business owners who are in the same position as I am. There just isn’t enough time in the day to do it all, and to do it well.

I’ve seriously considered hiring a SEO company to help market and promote my sites and get them the best rankings on the search engines for their keyword phrases. A company that knows how to set up a good promotional campaign can help an online business or website gain links, increase page rank and most importantly increase the amount of traffic to the site.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been looking at SEO companies services as I’ve tried to decide whether to hire a professional service to promote my sites or to continue to do this on my own.

One of the companies that I’ve been looking at recently is HTP Company. HTP is an Internet Advertising Company that specializes in web site marketing, internet advertising and marketing online.

I believe that HTP (High Technology Professionals) has been in business since 1996. They certainly offer quite a number of services and have some very informative articles on their website including a free Internet marketing, search engine optimization and Internet advertising tutorial for those that want to learn more about SEO.

Services offered by HTP include publishing, business consulting, search engine positioning, web development, web site design, marketing strategy, sales implementation and internet advertising. In other words they do it all.

One form of internet advertising that they specialize in is helping their clients buy text links, banner ads, text ads and in the creation of pay per click campaigns. All of which are of course aimed at increasing a websites SERP (search engine results page ranking), promoting the site or business and increasing traffic and sales. HTP Company can also place ads for your site on over 121,000 different websites.

As I look through their site I’ve become more and more impressed by the amount of services offered and the wealth of information on each and every page. Some SEO company websites just list their services and don’t really explain what each service really is or why these types of services or techniques are important to anyone who owns a website. You can actually learn quite a bit just by reading through the site if you are so inclined.

I’m also impressed by the partial client list on their About page. They have quite a few Fortune 500 corporations listed as clients. HTP Company has to be good at what they do to have secured such high profile companies as clients.

Can you see why I’ve been considering hiring HTP Company to help me promote my sites? Visit the HTP Company website yourself and see if they can help you promote your business or web site.

Before I stop gushing about this SEO company I should tell you that they also have a business directory where they list professional web sites and businesses. You can write to them to request that they view your site and add your link to their directory.

Time to add some divine metal wall art to my plain walls

September 7, 2007 by Tricia

wallartlog.jpg

Summers almost over and if you live in a climate that cools down in the autumn you’ll soon be spending more time indoors. I don’t know about you, but during Fall and Winter I tend to look around my house and ideas start brewing as to how I can redecorate to make it look even nicer. I know I’m not the only one who does this – I know people who rearrange their furniture and put out new wall decor and accessories two or three times a year!

We’re renovating our living room and dining room and I’m getting antsy to finish the rooms with accessories that I’ve had stored in boxes in the basement. I’m hoping that sometime in the next two months I’ll finally be able to make these rooms my own. We have a lot of items to accessorize the living room and dining room but I’ve never really decorated the walls in this house or my former apartment. The main reason why we never put up wall art was that our apartment had concrete walls and it was just too hard to hang anything and well, in this house we’re in the midst of renovations so we just haven’t been able to decorate yet.

viborgmetalwallart.gif Now I’m busy looking for wall art. I happened to visit an online store called Wall Decor and Home Accents. This store has a lovely selection of divine metal wall art in a variety of shapes and sizes that would make any wall look spectacular.

I really like the piece that’s called Viborg Metal Wall Art. It’s the photo that I’ve included above – isn’t that interesting? Some might think that it has an abstract modern look and I’d agree, but the piece also reminds me of nature with it’s shades of brown. It reminds me of a tree – perhaps tree bark? What comes to mind when you look at that piece? Certainly it could be a conversation piece if placed on a wall in a room where people gather.

vantania.gif If you like wall art you really should visit the Wall Decor and Home Accents website and have a look at their selection. The metal wall art really is divine. I don’t think there’s a piece there that I don’t like.

I must be in a nature mood tonight as the second piece of metal wall art that I’ve added to this post is called Vantania and it’s most definitely tree like. It appears to be composed of panels, but I could be mistaken.

The online store also carries architectural pieces, wall clocks, wall mirrors, candle wall scones and wrought iron decor. Many of the pieces are on sale right now, so if you are interested in finding some pieces to brighten up a plain wall of your home take a look. If you buy now you’ll save some money! Oh and Christmas isn’t too far off, some of these items would make fantastic Christmas or even house warming gifts.

Thousands of lighting products at Farreys to choose from!

September 7, 2007 by Tricia

On Monday evening I got together with my brothers and sister, nephews and nieces for our last big dinner out together for this family reunion. We had decided to meet at the Pickle Barrel restaurant downtown. There’s an escalator near the main entrance that takes you downstairs to the restaurant and they have beautiful modern chandeliers hanging over the escalator. You can almost touch them as you travel down the escalator.

Seeing these beautiful lights got my mind going again as to how to decorate our living room / dinning room when we finally finish our renovations. We definitely need new lighting!

With this in mind I visited Farreys.com. They have a huge variety of lighting fixtures, lamps, outdoor lighting and so on. You name it and I think they’ve got it. They should since they apparently have hundreds of thousands of styles of lights!

The main page of the site has a long list of many of the different lighting manufactures who’s lighting products they sell. So if you want to look for a particular lighting manufactures lighting fixtures that’s the place to start. They carry lighting made by Ambience, fine art lamps, Quoizel, Sea Gull Lighting, George Kovacs, Hinkley Lighting, Minka Lavery, Kichler Lighting, Fontana Arte, Maxim Lighting, Flos, Murray Feiss and many more.

Naturally since I’m looking for a chandelier for our dining room I started browsing the chandelier category. You know, they aren’t lying when they say they have hundreds of thousands of lighting products. Just the chandelier section alone has pages and pages of different styles of chandeliers. There are so many styles to look at that I think I’m going to hold off and visit the site on the weekend when I have a bit more time to really go over the choices. Believe me – if I can’t find something I like at Farreys I’m way too picky! lol

I’m still happy with our used Ford Contour

September 6, 2007 by Tricia

Over the last year or so I’ve started to think that it might be time for us to get a new car. We have an 11 year old Ford Contour. We’ve actually never had a brand new car. Our first two cars were “hand me downs” from Chris’ parents, then in 2000 when our Prelude kicked the bucket we decided it was time to buy our first real car.

We couldn’t afford a new car at the time because we were saving to purchase our house, but we really needed a car. We went and visited a friend of ours who worked at a Ford Dealership and that’s how we ended up getting our 1996 Ford Contour.

I can’t remember the exact price we ended up paying for our used ford, but I know we were able to trade in our very old (1984!) used Prelude that barely worked for about $4000 so that was taken off the price of our new used car. I think we ended up with a price of about $9,500 which was well within our budget.

This isn’t the best photo of our car and I can’t take a new one because Chris has the car today, but here’s what our 11 year old car looks like (excuse the fire truck, I took this shot last fall when there was a fire in the neighborhood):

Fire truck Toronto

Not bad, eh, for an old car? There’s absolutely no rust on it anywhere. I think that’s almost a miracle since we live in a cold climate and we don’t have a garage to put our car in during the winter months.

Overall we’ve been very happy with our car. When we bought the Ford we’d heard from other people that Ford’s have problems with this and that, but to tell you the truth every major car brand has some type of problem doesn’t it?

In the seven years that we’ve owned our Ford Contour these are the only problems that I can recall:

On a trip to Ottawa, a five hour drive, one of the wheels started to make a funny noise. We had to stop in a small town and take it to a garage to have it looked at. It turned out that the ball bearings in the wheel had frozen. We had them changed and had the tires rotated at the same time and we’ve had no further problems since that time.

A strange side effect of that one problem is that our anti-lock brake light is on all the time. Well, sometimes in the summer it goes out for a while, but once the cold weather hits it’s on again. We have the cars electrical system checked out and also had the anti-lock breaking system checked out and there’s nothing wrong. The anti-locking breaking works perfectly fine. The warning light being on is just a weird problem that doesn’t really mean anything.

A couple of years ago when I was either closing or opening the passenger side window I heard a crack and the window fell down into the door. The window didn’t break but the plastic mechanism that held it up and allowed it to go up and down when the power button was pushed had snapped. Fixing that problem wasn’t cheap. I think it cost over $200 because they had to take the door panel off to get into the window mechanism, plus they had to special order the part. At the time, our mechanic thought that all the windows might end up having the same problem. It’s true that the drivers side window sounds funny sometimes as we close it, but so far the mechanism is working.

The problem with the car that I find most troubling is that in the winter time the rubber liner around the doors and windows sometimes freezes over due to condensation in the car in the winter. This makes it almost impossible to open the door. When we forced it one time without knowing what trouble it would cause the rubber liner ripped off. We stuck it back in place, but it still comes loose from time to time.

Since the rubber around the doors and windows is a little loose now we’ve noticed that rain sometimes gets in the car during very heavy downpours. The rain of course must come down at the right angle to have this happen, so I guess it only happens once a year or so.

To combat the sticky doors during the winter we lightly rub some Vaseline on the rubber and this helps prevent condensation from sealing the doors shut. Most of the time.

We haven’t had any engine trouble to speak of at all. I’m very pleased to be able to say that. We certainly had enough engine troubles with our two other used cars (different brands). My husband Chris is pretty good about taking the car in for regular oil changes and tune ups. He does do some of the maintenance himself such as changing the spark plugs and filters. One of the filters is in a very odd and hard to get at place in the engine so that’s always fun to change, but he gets it done.

I don’t know if we lucked out and happened to get a great used car or if the fact that we maintain the car regularly and don’t drive it daily has contributed to our lack of serious problems with the car. Certainly when we begin looking for another car we’ll consider getting another Ford. I’m still not sure if we’ll get a new or used car this time round. I guess it will depend on the price range for which ever make and model we like best. I’m certainly not opposed to purchasing used cars.

If you live in the UK and happen to be considering getting a Used Ford visit the VCARS website where you’ll be able to browse through several pages of used Ford listings complete with descriptions and photos of each car.
