Shop and help a blogger at the same time

December 4, 2006 by Tricia

Are you getting your Christmas shopping done?

I haven’t started yet, and as a result of our situation, with me not working at all due to illness, our families know that we won’t be giving out gifts this year. We just can’t afford it.

What I’d like to ask my readers though, is that if you are shopping online, won’t you please click on my Amazon store link? The link is in the top left sidebar and it’s labeled Gifts, Gadgets, Books and More!. I mean, if by chance you are planning on shopping at Amazon, why not help out a fellow blogger and shop there through my link?

I’d be eternally grateful and I’d be happy to help you out in some way if I can in the future. As of Monday I’ll have been of work because of my Crohns for a whole year. I don’t have any sick pay or any other kind of money coming in now and all we have is Chris’ part time income. I hate asking for help, but as I said if you are shopping anyway, then this is a way that you could help me out very easily. I’ll only make a small commission off any products you purchase through my store links but every little bit helps.

If you are shopping but can’t find the perfect gift for a picky friend or loved one maybe you might want to have a look at Amazon gift certificates? I have a link for those too in my left sidebar. With a gift certificate your loved one can get the gift of their choosing and in the long run it will end being just what they want.

Thanks in advance if you are so kind as to help me out by buying a gift or something for the holidays through my Amazon store link.

Drooling over luxury cars

December 4, 2006 by Tricia

Is there anybody else like me out there? Surely I can’t be the only one? Whenever a really nice car, I mean ones that you don’t see very often, ones that could be called exotic cars drives by my jaw just drops.

I know I’m a girl, I’m not supposed to feel that way about certain cars am I? But I do. I just stare when a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Jaguar, Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, Shelby, Porsche, or Aston Martin passes by. Remember that photo that I put in a post, I think it was back in September of an Aston Martin that we saw while we were in Brantford? Yep, proof that I love fancy cars.

I’ve been lucky enough to have driven a Porche a few times, oh and a Jag and a benz but none of the other more exotic cars that make me drool. Someday though, maybe I’ll be able to afford one of these babies … at least a Lotus or a Porche right? Yeah, I’d like that.

Does anyone else drool when they see these kinds of cars? Have you been lucky enough to drive any of these car types? Tell me about it.

Crazy time of year for Jewellers

December 2, 2006 by Tricia

‘Tis the season, and no I don’t mean the Holiday season I mean the season for getting engaged. Back when I used to be a jeweller this would be the busiest time of year. From at least mid October and up until the first week or January I’d be busy working as much as 18 hour days putting diamond cut designs on bands, signets, bangles and other pieces of jewelry. I also did gold electroplating and made rubber molds so that jewelry pieces could be reproduced easily in wax form and then cast into gold by melting the was forms out of a hardened plaster of paris type of mix.

By Christmas time each year I was exhausted. I love Christmas but back in those days- having that one or two days off was nicer than the holiday itself. I swear in the few hours I slept each night during the busiest time of year I’d dream of all the designs that I’d do on wedding bands, engagement rings, and bracelets.

My husband Chris worked for another business, and well he wasn’t my husband at the time, he was still only my boyfriend. He did jewelry repair and he set stones in pieces as well. If we’d merged both of our talents into my business, plus kept my sister around with her engraving business we would have made a killing.

During that time of year Chris and I were not only working hard in our respective jewelry businesses but we also made jewelry for our friends. I don’t know how many times we’d bring home loose diamonds for our visiting friends to choose from, and then once they’d picked out what they decided was the perfect diamond for their soon to be fiance we’d make up whatever engagement ring they’d picked out. It’s a good thing that we both had good connections with diamond wholesalers because we’d often get discount prices on the diamonds our friends had picked out. Our friends always got a great price on any custom designed jewelry that we did for them. Lucky dogs!

My husband and I got engaged on New Years Eve, but we didn’t even have an engagement ring at that time. In fact I still don’t have an engagement ring. I really don’t care either. I don’t know too many people that work in the jewelry trade- I mean the people who actually make the jewelry – that really wear much jewelry. I have a fantastic collection, but I rarely wear it.

My sister is still an engraver and I know she’ll be working long hours this month. Ah, the life of a jeweller.

So when did you get engaged? And more importantly, what time of year did you start picking out your engagement rings and wedding bands? Are you one of the people that used to drive me nuts at this time of year?

How much is your home worth?

December 2, 2006 by Tricia

I don’t know about you, but once we moved into our house I started to get curious about how much it was worth compared to others in the neighborhood. This didn’t start right away. No, we were far too busy tearing out walls and refinishing floors and re-painting everything in the first six months or so to worry about things like that. However, as our house started to shape and become something that we felt we’d made even nicer than it had been when we’d purchased it, I started to wonder how our home compared to the rest of the homes in the neighborhood.

The only problem was you can’t just walk up to a neighbor that is selling their home, or a new one who just moved in and ask them what the price of their home is. Well, you can, but I’m not the type of person to do that.

I found a few ways to figure out the prices of homes in the area – and soon discovered that similar homes were selling for about $100,000 more than we’d purchased our home for. Man, we got a deal! Now our house, If I go by the rate of similar home sales in the area, is worth more than 150,000 more than we paid.

I just found site that will help people living in the United States sate their curiosity. You can go to the site and type in your address and get a property appraisal which will tell you the estimated value of your home as well as information as to how much people in your neighborhood have been selling their homes for. I can see a site like this coming in handy for someone who is thinking of selling their home and trying to figure out how much they would get if they sold it.

Green with envy

December 1, 2006 by Tricia

Oh my gosh! I’m so jealous! Do you remember I told you that a friend of mine, a nurse, had moved to California to take a job there? She just sent me photos of her new home! It’s fantastic, four bedrooms, a pool in the backyard with a nice garden, a huge kitchen. I must go and visit her soon.

She also told me that her broker with real estate La Jolla was great, putting up with her indecision over homes and taking her out almost every day to show her homes that fit into what she was looking for. Our real estate agent was like that too and we even became friends after spending so much time together looking at houses.

Oh I am so going to visit my friend in the new year. Her new house has a great view and she’s near the beach. Ah, what I wouldn’t do for a great Californian holiday right now.
