Lingerie parties and Lingerie sales

May 19, 2007 by Tricia

Oh oh! I got an email earlier from my niece and she’s having a lingerie party! She’s holding it at the end of May. That could be interesting!

Thinking about lingerie parties just reminded me that for a very short time I once sold lingerie! It was sometime just before I started working as a nurse. I might even have still been in school at the time. I attended a lingerie party that was being held at a friends and some how I ended up getting talked into selling the stuff myself!

It’s kind of like holding Avon or Tupperware parties. You have your samples and you get a friend to hold a party. You go ahead of time and set everything up. What a pain when you have at least two racks of clothing! Then once everyone arrives you do a little presentation and anyone interested checks out the clothing, tries it on and hopefully orders from you.

I did ok at this, but it was time consuming and I felt like I was using my friends. Plus, you may not realize this about me, but I’m actually kind of shy in public. Especially when I’m around a lot of people that I don’t really know. I don’t think I’m as shy now as I used to be … I mean I’m a nurse – I’ve got to speak to strangers and ask them all kinds of personal details about themselves, and I do my darnedest to get a laugh or smile out of people and you can’t be too shy to do that! However, put me in a restaurant by myself to eat a meal or up on stage to give a speech and it’s not pretty!

Anyway, I don’t know if my niece is selling the lingerie or if she’s just holding the party. I wonder if I’ll end up ordering anything interesting?

Has the internet allowed you to consider working from home?

May 18, 2007 by Tricia

I just wrote about the idea of having a home based business and being able to work from anywhere in the world. How nice would that be?

It’s funny though. I was just thinking about how, when I was growing up as a child – the news, books, documentaries, and movies always made it seem that many people would be working shorter work weeks, fewer hours with higher incomes and that many people would be working from home.

I do believe that over the last decade or so that this has become a reality for more and more people.

The internet and advanced communications technology has made it possible for many people to work fewer hours in their place of business, work from home, work abroad and to make good money while doing so.

I think that women have probably had the most luck at taking advantage of the way things have changed with how we work.

I mean, if a woman wants to have children she often must take some time off to recover from giving birth and to care for her new born child. There are still many countries that do not guarantee maternity leave and that a job will still be waiting for a woman when they return from caring for their newborn. I could be wrong but I think even in the US – at least in some states, Maternity leave is not guaranteed. Maternity and or paternity leave is guaranteed here in Canada and that does make it easier for people to have a family and go back to the workforce when their child is a year old.

Women who don’t have maternity leave or who opt to stay at home while their children are young were traditionally left income- less. With the cost of living going up and up it’s hard for any family to not need two incomes.

I know several women who have used the internet to generate an income. Either through coming up with a fantastic website that generates a good income through advertising, or by creating small e-businesses that they can work from home. Some of these women have been inventive too and have come up with new products- often related to children or child care and have started out by selling these items over the internet.

Other women have worked out a deal with their place of employment whereby they are able to do most of their work at home and perhaps only go into the office once a week or less, yet still make the same or almost the same income as when they worked 40+ hours each week in the office.

Prior to the internet – say 15+ years ago, this just wasn’t possible. Yes men and women were still finding ways to make income from home and were being creative entrepreneurs, but there were fewer of them out there than there is now.

How has the internet changed your life? Do you work from home or generate some extra money through work on the internet or through your website or blog?

Work from home? Live abroad

May 18, 2007 by Tricia

You know, due to my illness, I’ve been stuck at home for almost a year and a half now. Since I stopped getting sick pay from my workplace almost a year ago I’ve had to find a way to bring in some money so that we could continue to own our lovely home and pay all of our bills.

It’s been hard, but for those of you who have been reading this blog you know that I’ve managed to do quite well as far as creating an income that we can live off of through the internet. I’m at the point now that I think I’m actually making more than I did when I worked as an ER nurse.

I know that several of the people who read my blog have also found ways to make income from the internet. Either through creating their own businesses or doing work here and there for a multitude of internet related companies.

Have you ever thought of Living Abroad? I mean, if you are making a great income from work that you do through home, or your home based business there’s no reason that you can’t do it from any place in the world. Is there? Heck, if you choose to move to the right country you could even be making a tax free income and thus have even more money to live off of. This is beginning to sound more and more appealing isn’t it?

Where would you go if you decided to pack it all up and work from home?

I know that I’d probably enjoy living and working in an exotic location. Someplace that was fairly warm year round, and in my case it would also have to have a decent health care system since I have Crohn’s disease. Hmmm Maybe a country such as Australia or Belize would work for me.

Naturally if I were really going to pack up and move to an exotic local I’d likely end up having to buy a property abroad as well. At this point, we’d have to either sell the home we are living in now, or rent it out in order to do this, but it’s a thought isn’t it?

I’ve never been to visit Australia or Belize, but the thought of being able to work from home in one of those locations is very appealing. If we could manage it, I’d try to get a home close to the ocean and beach. Hey, since I work with my computer alone, I could perhaps even sit on the beach each day as I got my work done. Oh that’d be so nice.

I’d miss our Canadian Spring and Autumn because I love watching how the seasons change here, but I don’t think I’d miss our cold, cold winters all that much.

If you work from home, have an e-business, or have a dream of being able to work from home where would you want to live and why?

If the idea of living abroad and working from home is appealing you should visit the Living and Working Abroad Resource website that got me thinking of living in an exotic local. You’ll find articles discussing immigration laws, health care, advantages of living or retiring in other Countries and a whole lot more.

Do visit the site. It’s good to dream, and you never know, by reading the Living and Working Abroad Resource website you may find a way to make your dreams a reality.

Chris was noticed by hospital bigwigs

May 17, 2007 by Tricia

Chris had a long long day at work yesterday. He didn’t sleep well that night, and then he got up early for his 7:30 a.m. shift at the hospital. He was only supposed to work until 3:30 p.m., but one of the guys that he works with put his back out early in the morning and Chris ended up working twice as hard through the day, and worked until 7:30 p.m. to cover part of the other guys shift as well.

Needless to say he was pretty tired when he got home last night. He’d been supposed to work another 7:30 a.m. shift this morning, but since he’d put in such long hours yesterday he was told that he could come in sometime around 9 a.m. instead. He works in the OR recovery room and I guess they didn’t expect their first patient to arrive until about 8:30 a.m. so that worked out great for Chris. Of course, since he was so tired from his almost sleepless night the night before and his long work hours he slept very well last night. Hopefully he doesn’t have to work overtime today too.

The only problem was that he thought it was Friday when he got up this morning. Don’t you just hate that when you get confused about what day it is?

As Chris was leaving for work this morning he told me that he was the topic of discussion at a big hospital meeting earlier in the week. Apparently many of the doctors – heads of departments, as well as Nursing department heads and other people high in management had a meeting. I don’t know what the meeting was about, but Chris was told by his manager and some other nurses that had attended the meeting that he was discussed for about 20 minutes!

Apparently they were discussing how good he is with patients and how he can easily build a rapport with patients and their friends and relatives, setting them at ease easily. Maybe they are going to use the “Chris Model” to inspire other hospital employees to be more compassionate towards patients and visitors?

I’m so proud of him! His kind nature has always stood out to people, but now it seems that he might be getting some official recognition for it.

Chris and I are a lot alike in that we are both really nice people. Yeah, I know you’ll just have to take my word for it that I am a kind person. LOL I haven’t been able to work in the ER for close to a year and a half due to my illness, but I too always stood out and got some recognition for my kindness to patients, families and co-workers too.

We’re hoping to attend the Blog World Expo, and P0stieCon convention in Las Vegas in November. If any of you are attending, or live in the Las Vegas area maybe we’ll get to meet you. If we do meet you’ll be able to judge for yourselves if Chris and I really are as nice as I say we are. LOL

NAHETS enables Americian Indians in the Heavy equiptment training field

May 15, 2007 by Tricia

Nahets, which stands for the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools, and is located at http://www.nahets.com has just announced that it will use it’s own funds to enable American Indians to enter the construction field. The American Indians who take this course will be trained as heavy equipment operators.

I think this is great news for the American Indians. Free training for anyone is always good news. Considering that construction is booming all across North American I’m sure that people who successfully complete the course will not have any trouble finding work. I believe that Native Americans often have higher unemployment rates – sometimes due to where they are located of course – so this will be a good boost for those we get into the training program.

Read more about Nahets in this press release:

On May 2, 2007, the Nevada School of Construction and NAHETS Corporate offices hosted a visit by members of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Lynn Forcia, Division Chief of the Office of Indian Energy & Economic Development-Division of Workforce Development, as well has two of her colleagues, Jody LeCompte-Garrison and Francis Dunne, were taken on a tour of the Nevada Campus and Field Site by Debra Forbush, campus president, and Sharla Patterson, Native American Liaison.

Discussed were the three different levels of Heavy Equipment Operation offered, as well as the Crane Operation program and housing options for out-of-state students. Tuition costs, financial aid, job-placement assistance, and success stories of previous students were also topics of note. While at the field site campus representatives were able to discuss in detail seat time on equipment, practical field site projects, instructor qualifications, and unique teaching techniques, including the use of Ipod’s.

At NAHETS Corporate Offices, the group was given a tour by Mike Martens, Brian Thornton, and Rhett Nielson. Discussed were out Heavy Metal Program, and our soon-to-be implemented online course study. The online course was of particular interest to the visitors as it would potentially cut housing costs for out-of-state students as well as facilitate an intense study of material until a high level of proficiency is met.

They were very impressed with our program and have committed to give our education information to the Native American tribes they visit at least once a year. They also personally invited Sharla Patterson to their National Indian Economic Development Conference in Reno, Nevada on October 31, 2007.
