Zoo Country – great for kids and animal lovers

June 30, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve just been browsing a site that I think would be perfect for kids and anyone in general who loves animals. The website is called Zoo Country and it’s chock full information and pictures of all kinds of Zoo Animals. Are you starting to see why I think kids would love this site?

It’s time to start summer vacations and I’m sure that some of you might visit cities with Zoos. Wouldn’t it be great to brush up on some interesting facts about some of the animals you might see at that zoo? Or perhaps you’ve just come back from a trip to the zoo or perhaps an exotic vacation and want to find information about that odd looking creature you saw – visit Zoo Country.

There are lots of Animal Activities and Crafts plus Animal books and toys on the site. Any of which would keep your child occupied for hours as they have fun playing games, creating an animal art project, reading an animal related book or playing with a stuffed animal toy.

I really like how they’ve organized their wild animal information and pictures. Rather than organizing the animal categories in a more traditional way they’ve arranged their animal categories based on animal characteristics like The biggest animals, the cutest animals, the ugliest animals and so on.

If you love looking at photos and reading about wild animals definitely check this site out.

Holy Smokes Mother Nature’s at it again!

June 23, 2008 by Tricia

All I can say is wow.

At about 2:45 p.m. this afternoon severe thunderstorms hit my area of Toronto. By 3 p.m. the front lawn and part of the back lawn had several inches of water covering it and naturally our sunroof in our enclosed front porch started to leak because the water was coming down hard off the edge of the roof. That’s the only time it leaks.

There was also lots of hail. Not as big as last weeks grape to golf ball sized hail, but plenty of small pea to grape sized balls of hail.

It’s still pouring! Oh and there’s lots of thunder and lightening too. I’m not sure how much rain has come down or how much we’re expecting but there’s a lot of it.

I was reading the Weather Networks severe weather report a few minutes ago and apparently there’s been funnel clouds spotted over Toronto and nearby areas. Great …

I did take pictures of the hail and the down pour but since I’m running the laptop on it’s battery to protect it from any power surges and I don’t want to transfer the photos from the camera right now. I will post the shots later if they turned out decent.

I hope that most of you aren’t getting the kind of weather we’re having here … it’s been a freaky week of storms. Time for it to warm up and be more summer like I think.

Sweet Bear Cubs

tiny bears

Aren’t these bear cubs absolutely adorable? Too bad they can’t stay that size huh?

I’ve never seen bear cubs this young, but I have seen slightly older ones in the wild. I believe the last time I saw a young bear cub was in Algonquin Park. We’d been camping and we drove to a garbage drop off (not a dump, just a drop off with trash cans) and the young cub was near one of the trash cans.

Needless to say we didn’t get out of the car. We couldn’t see Momma bear, but surely she was around and you never get between a mother bear and her cub. That’s like asking for a death sentence!

Why I ‘otter …

family huddle

Aw, a family huddle or maybe it’s a cuddle. Hard to tell, but it sure is cute!

We had otters at our cottage. They lived in and swam in the creek beside our cottage. I’d often see one to three swimming around but I never saw them gathered together like this. That would be a sight to see.

Grey squirrel enjoying a day in the park

This weeks theme is I Spy

trees at beach

I spied this grey squirrel enjoying a nice day in the park in the Toronto Beaches area and had to take it’s picture as it foraged among the trees.

I actually took this photo in January 2006. Yes, it was winter time and we’d gone to the beach because it was such a nice warm winter day. Now, warm here in the winter time means that it was perhaps 10 Celsius which really isn’t very warm at all, but when you’ve been experiencing weeks of below freezing weather just about anything above zero is warm!

We expect today to be another nice winter day and I think that later in the afternoon we might take our Labrador retriever puppy to the beach for the first time. I’d love to see her have some fun in the water, but I think the water will be far too cold so she’ll have to settle for running on the beach. I think she’ll be happy with that.

Hopefully I’ll get some great photos!
