In the last 36 hours I’ve spent a LOT of money!

October 4, 2007 by Tricia

Ahhhh!

I was just adding up my receipts and in the last two days I’ve spent a lot of money.

My most expensive purchase was of course my husband and I’s trip to Las Vegas in November. I booked us a hotel room for three nights and paid for return flights. I think I got a fairly good deal at the cost of about $1700. Of course I’d be a whole lot happier if that were several hundred dollars cheaper.

You see, my husband and I are going to the Blogworld convention and also attending P0stieCon. I expect to have a lot of fun meeting bloggers that I’ve only known through talking with them on the Internet, learning how to blog better and how to be more successful at monetizing our sites.

It will also be my husband and I’s first trip to Las Vegas so we’re excited to see the city too. The trip is only two weeks after our 13th wedding anniversary too so if we can we’ll do something special just for us too. (Like win some money at the Casino??? 😉 )

Since we’re going to a blogging convention I figured that if they provide Wi-Fi at the convention I’ll probably have my laptop with me and might even do a bit of live blogging while at some of the conferences. So the next big purchase was a 12 cell battery for my laptop. It came with a 6 cell lithium that has never held it’s charge for more than an hour or hour and a half when unplugged. So I hope the new battery will give me at least 3 or more hours of unplugged time.

I believe they are supposed to last even longer than that, but whether I’m plugged in or not I’ve always got two browsers and my email program open so perhaps that eats up the resources.

Other expenses … well … as you know I’ve been stuck at home sick for almost two years. Many days I don’t even go outside into my lovely garden let alone work in it so I’m terribly out of shape.

I’ve gained a bit of weight due to my inactivity. Nothing too bad as it’s very hard to become drastically overweight when one has Crohn’s, but enough that I can feel it. Also, the lack of exercise has caused me to lose a lot of muscle tone. I can really feel it when I get outside in the garden to do some work or even when Chris and I go out shopping or do other things around town and I must walk around for hours.

My pain doctor is always telling me to get outside and walk each day, but after the two very nasty falls I had last year I’m hesitant to go for much of a walk on my own and with my husbands shift work I can’t always count on him to have the energy or time to go out walking with me. So walking outside is not really in the cards for me right now. My falls were caused by either my innate clumsiness and or the fact that I sometimes get dizzy when I walk around. I’m not walking alone. Sorry.

So the next best thing to help me perhaps loose a little weight over the next month, but most definitely tone up my muscles, was to get some exercise equipment in the house.

So last night when Chris came home from work we went out and I bought one of those exercise balls and and some of the hand held sand weighted balls that go with the ball and pilates type of exercise routines.

I also bought an elliptical trainer. I’m sure my knees will whine when I start using it, but since my muscles are out of shape and due to this darn Crohn’s my knees are already whining.

So I guess I’ve spent about $2,700 or so in the last day and a half. We bought other things last night too and that’s why last nights spending ended up being close to $1000 but the bulk of the money spent in the last 36 hours has all had to do with our upcoming Vegas trip.

Just wait until I go clothes shopping!

Hey, I want to have fun while I’m there and I know getting in a little better shape will give me more stamina and boost my self confidence too. Hey getting my muscles toned up might even lessen some of that klutziness that I was born with too. Gawd only knows I don’t want all my fellow bloggers to see me “Pull a Trish” as my acts of clumsiness are fondly known in these parts.

Oh and I almost forgot. Our muffler. Well the cars manifold had a hole in it for the last year, and Chris only got it half fixed a few months ago. We still had that bad muffler noise. So on Monday he took the car in and had the muffler replaced so add that to our spending spree too! Argh.

So wish me luck in my effort to look and feel a little better for my November trip! Those of you who meet me can let me know if my efforts paid off or not.

Oh and if anyone wants to contribute to the “Trish depleted her bank account fund” well … go right ahead. LOL

Getting together with friends from St. Lucia

September 28, 2007 by Tricia

Sometime later this evening, after my husband gets home from work, we’re having some friends over. Chris invited them over so that they can jam. I think they’re going to be playing music with a bit of island flare to it. Did I not mention our friends are from the beautiful island of St. Lucia?

I always enjoy when they come over because I get to learn more about other countries and cultures. You see our friends enjoy talking about St. Lucia. I don’t blame them one bit either as it sounds like a lovely island full of friendly people and beautiful scenery.

Did you know that the people of St. Lucia enjoy Creole food? Since the island was first colonized by the French this has greatly influenced their culinary style. Perhaps I should make a Jambalaya for dinner? Or maybe some fresh fish. Whatever I make I’m sure it won’t match the style of food from St. Lucia, but I could try.

One day Chris and I will visit St. Lucia and try the various popular foods ourselves. I’m not too sure if I’ll like saltfish though. I hear it’s an acquired taste!

Our friends often tell us how beautiful the beaches of St. Lucia are, so I’m sure if we went to the island we’d be spending some time on the beach as well. Perhaps traveling around to see different ones on each side of the island.

Anyway, we should have an interesting evening tonight. Our friends are always fun to get together with, and as I said, I enjoy learning more about their original homeland of St. Lucia when they visit.

I once had an opportunity to go to Bali Indonesia

September 26, 2007 by Tricia

asiahotelsbellhop_lean.gif A few years ago one of my best friends from work asked me to go on holiday with her. As it turns out I was unable to go as that was just about the time that my Crohn’s was really starting to flare up. How I wish I’d gone!

I’d been invited to travel to Asia with her and two other friends. They ended up going to Thailand, Jakarta and Bali, plus several other small towns and villages in between.

My friend had known how much I wanted to go on the 3 week long vacation so whenever she managed to get to an Internet cafe she sent out emails filled with descriptions of the places they’d visited and the meals they’d eaten along the way. She also sent a few pictures too.

Of course all those detailed letters of her travels and the photos that she sent only made me want to go to Indonesia even more than ever.

I’ve even spent some time on the AsiaHotels.com website reading the Travelers Tales section where people who’ve stayed in hotels in Bali and elsewhere have enjoyed themselves so much that they’ve come back to the site to write about their travels. There are quite a few personal recommendations for various restaurants and tourist destinations.

The site also lists a large number of discount asian hotels. The prices are very reasonable and hotels seem to be very nice. I’m going to keep this site in mind just in case I ever get the opportunity to go to Asia in the future.

The barn in the Meadow

September 13, 2007 by Tricia

IMGP2988

Don’t you love old barns?

I took this photo last year when we were driving from Ottawa back to Toronto. We’d been on a visit to Ottawa to attend a birthday party for one of my aunts and as we drove home we just had to stop and take a few photos of the lovely scenery along the way.

I’m from Ottawa and now that my parents are gone we don’t get out that way very often anymore. One of my brothers still lives there, but he seems to come here more than we go there.

Enjoy free time on the weekend? Visit Everyday Weekender

September 13, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve just spent some time reading a blog that I just came across called Everyday Weekender. The site is written by a fellow Ontarian who’s written this blog as a celebration of the weekend. Who wouldn’t like a site that’s all about enjoying some well deserved R&R on the weekend?

Not only is this site written by a fellow Canadian, but I think we might have some things in common. He writes about spending time in the garden, traveling to one of my favorite Caribbean islands – the Dominican Republic, Southern Ontario attractions and events, barbecuing, cottage life and one of my favorite cottage type activities – canoeing!

Yes, it was a post about his new canoe that caught my eye. I’m sure by now you guys know how much I love canoeing so how can I not like someone who’s just learning how to canoe?

There’s plenty of interesting posts filled with DIY activities that will help you enjoy your weekends such as this post about making your own Keggerator. Yes, that’s turning a fridge into a big beer keg! I must show Chris this post … or maybe I shouldn’t as I’m sure I’ll end up with a Keggerator in my basement if I do!

I Luv this site.

If all of that isn’t enough to get you to go and have a peek at Everyday Weekender there is the matter of the PR 5 linkback promotion he’s having. That’s right. If you write an article about his blog he’ll link back to you and you’ll get a link from a PR 5 blog. Gaining another PR5 link for my site is nice, but that’s really not why I choose to tell you about Everyday Weekender today. I don’t gush about sites just for links. I really do love this site and I’ve added it to my blogroll already.
