Ensuring You Have A Good Experience Staying At Hotels With Children

March 29, 2013 by Trish

Hotel Puerta America, Madrid HDR

Your children can be great travel companions, but they can also create some challenges. Many parents are nervous about taking their children into a hotel, especially a higher-end hotel. Fortunately, there are a few simple things that you can do to make sure that your children get along fine and don’t disturb any of the other people there.

There are a number of factors that you will want to take into consideration. However, the most important step to take is finding a hotel that your children will be comfortable at.

What Type of Hotel Should Your Children Stay at?

Traveling with children doesn’t have to be stressful. However, you will need to plan your trip carefully and prepare for possible problems ahead of time. Here are some things that you can do to make your trip less stressful.

Choose a Hotel that is situated for Children

You will want to be careful when picking a hotel. Some hotels are more suitable for single travelers or honeymooners than families. Look for one that has all the features that will keep your children happy. Here are some amenities that a hotel should have for anyone traveling with children:

  • Look for a hotel that offers complementary breakfasts. Food can get expensive so this will be a good way to save money.
  • Find a hotel that has a cooking unit and large refrigerator. You don’t want to have to spend a lot of money going out to eat when you are traveling with the entire family.
  • Ask the hotel what the typical demographic of their visitors is. You may not have any trouble keeping your children at a hotel that is typically frequented by seniors. However, your family may have a hard time staying at a hotel that is going to be filled with college students partying on spring break.
  • Look for a hotel that has activities for your children to enjoy. Many hotels offer pools and other things to keep your children busy. These may be more essential when you are traveling in a city where you will be spending a lot of time in your hotel room, but it will be important anywhere.
  • Try to find a hotel that is located away from busier roads. This is especially important if you are traveling with children under 7. However, you will be a lot safer staying in a hotel near a major highway regardless of your child’s age. You will all be able to sleep a lot easier if you don’t have to worry about traffic driving past your room all night.
  • Ask if the hotel has thick blinds. Your children will be able to sleep much later if you can close the light out of the room.

You will need to find a great hotel that your children will want to travel at. Make sure that you choose a hotel where your children will be safe and not likely to get bored. This will make things much less stressful for everybody.

Keeping Man’s Best Friend Afloat: Boating Safety Tips For Dogs

January 12, 2013 by Trish

There’s nothing better than taking your four-legged friend out with you on all your nautical adventures. Dogs are perfectly capable of managing on water, but it’s important that you think carefully about their welfare, especially if it’s their first time aboard. Here are a few key safety tips to consider when introducing your faithful companion to your vessel.

 1.    Introductions are important
Dogs (like people) need time to adjust to new experiences. If you want your pet to be comfortable onboard, then it’s important to give them access to the boat before you set off on your first trip together. Set aside a day before your planned voyage and let your dog explore the boat whilse it’s still moored. Think about the unique experiences a boat presents and how sensitive your dog is to sound and movement. Make sure you turn on the engine so that he/she knows what it sounds feels like to be on a working vessel – if your dog is sensitive to loud noises this is especially crucial. You also need to know what you’ve got to look out for!

 2.    Water, water everywhere
Having enough drinking for your pet is always crucial and never more so when you’re aboard your boat. Dogs lose a lot of water when they pant so it’s important that you have ample provision to keep them hydrated. It can be very difficult to keep a bowl of water onboard, especially if your vessel is small, so it’s worth experimenting with different methods. Some dog owners use a tub with high sides but as this is not really practical if your dog is on the smaller end of the scale, it is worth teaching them how to drink out of a water bottle so that they can have refreshment whenever they need it. There are plenty of how-to videos on youtube to help you with this particular task!

 3.    Donning the Life Jacket
When you’re boating with man’s best friend, this is the most important pet accessory of all. However, as anyone who has tried to put a hilarious Halloween costume on their dog will attest, not every dog is receptive to being clothed. So, just as it’s important to get your dog used to the sights and sounds of the boat, you must slowly introduce the concept of the life jacket ahead of time so that you’re not faced with an endless battle on the day of your voyage and you don’t want to be constantly worrying that your dog will shuck off its life preserver at the worst moment. Be patient and kind as you are whenever you teach your dog something new – give them time and reward and eventually they’ll adjust.

 4.    Remember sunscreen
This is easily forgotten but it’s especially crucial for dogs with a light coat. Provide as much shade as you can on your vessel, but also take the precaution of talking with your vet and find out which sunscreen is most effective for use on your dog. Their skin burns just as easily as ours!

 5.    Think about the bathroom situation
This can be tricky as I can rapidly turn into a safety issue for not only our dog but also for everyone else on board – slipping is a real danger and should not be ignored. If your vessel is large enough,  you can train your dog to use a specific portion of the boat to urinate and defecate. However, it’s definitely advisable to take your dog to empty its bladder before you board and to pack as many doggie bags as you can carry.

So there you have it. If you’ve never sailed before and you spot a used boat for sale then this could be your (and your pets’) greatest journey yet. Remember, with just a little preparation, you and your dog can have all the nautical fun without any of the worry. Happy high-seas adventuring!

20 Bucket List Ideas for 2013

December 31, 2012 by Trish

A bucket list is a great way to fulfill lifelong dreams and add more meaning to your life. It’s a deeper and more doable way of managing resolutions and self-improvement. Bucket lists give a sense of accomplishment and hope for the future by creating not just resolutions, but action plans to make them happen. Use these tips and ideas to get started.

Making Your Bucket List—Quick Tips

If you’ve never seen or written a bucket list, it’s not all that hard to do. Some people like to use a special journal. More and more people are going online with their lists at sites like Bucketlist.org and others. Just Google “online bucket list” to find one that works for you. Because making a bucket list is a creative process, you might like a mobile app for your list.

Once you’ve decided what format to work with, follow these tips:

  • Start with at least ten things. Remember you don’t have to complete all 10 or 30 in 2013.
  • Add stuff you’ve always wanted to do, even if you know you won’t be able to cross it off your bucket list next year.
  • Be specific. Don’t just put down bungee jumping. Add where you want to bungee jump.
  • Challenge yourself. If you are afraid of heights, then add a few hair-raising ideas to your bucket list.

Here are some bucket list ideas to get you started:

1. Bungee jump off of the Royal Gorge Bridge, Colorado, United States.

2. Skydive into the Las Vegas Desert.

3. Write a children’s book.

4. Ride all the rides all Disney theme parks.

5. Watch Old-faithful erupt.

6. Go back to school and get my Masters.

7. Visit every U.S. State.

8. Cruise around Great Britain.

9. Go to the national library in Wales and research my family history.

10. Play Sleepless in Seattle on the Eifel Tower.

11. Visit New York and get a real New York Pizza with all the trimmings.

12. Write a short story for your kids.

13. Publish a book on Kindle.

14. Start a side business selling crafts.

15. Do a pet food drive for a local pet shelter.

16. Go skiing in Tahoe.

17. Take cooking lessons from a food network chef.

18. Get entirely out of debt.

19. Ride every roller coaster in the United States.

20. People watch from a Paris café.

Crossing an Item off Your Bucket List

Choose one or two of your bucket list items to complete in 2013 and break them down into smaller achievable bits. For example, Visit New York and get a real New York Pizza with all the trimmings can be broken down into save for a trip to New York City, plan a trip to New York City, find out where to get the best New York pizza, and eat the pizza.

Identify bucket list items that will take a few years to complete, such as “Visit every U.S. state.” Break these down into smaller items you can do one at a time, such as taking a long weekend to tour a state or two surrounding yours.

Keep your list alive by reviewing it weekly or monthly. Challenge yourself to add a new item each time you cross one off.

Your bucket list reflects your hopes and dreams. Let your bucket list inspire you to do more, go further and stick to the plans you have to better your life.

Finding the Best Holiday Accommodation for you and your Dog

October 6, 2012 by Trish

When you have a dog and you’re planning to go on holidays you can’t even consider leaving your loved pet behind with family or friends, in fact you want him to be by your sides at all times. This is why it’s a sensible idea to plan your holidays in advance in order to have enough time to look for the perfect holiday accommodation for you and your four footed friend. Here are some tips on finding the best holiday accommodation not only for you but also for him.

Your Holiday Destination

When you plan to go on holidays it is really important to have a clear idea of your destination, in fact knowing your holiday destination will help you plan the rest. You’ll be able to book your ticket in advance and enjoy potential offers and you’ll also be able to book your holiday accommodation in that very location. Some people plan to go on holiday with their dog, they book an accommodation such as a hotel room without asking if dogs are allowed, this is exactly the kind of things that can ruin your holidays. So make sure that the accommodation you choose is dog friendly before making your bookings.

The Kind of Accommodation you’d Like

Do some searches on the Internet and write down the kind of holiday accommodation you’d like. During this selection phase make sure that you have your needs in mind but also your dog’s. In an ideal world finding an accommodation that is next to a park will be perfect for him, as you’ll be able to take him to the park for a walk any time you feel that he may need some fresh air. You can also choose an accommodation by the sea as dogs enjoy running on the beach, and if you’ve never brought him to the beach it will be the best occasion to make him discover new sensations. Once you’ve selected your favourite accommodations, make sure you don’t take your decision too quickly. In fact, take the time to compare the different accommodations you selected.

Comparison Phase

This phase helps you to eliminate any accommodation that you think would be a bit problematic for you or for your four footed friend. For instance if you’ve selected a hotel room you can forget about this as most hotels don’t allow pets, for various reasons. Then, if you choose a sharing accommodation, the presence of a dog might cause problem for some of your flatmates, therefore this is definitely not the holiday accommodation you should go for.

The Best Dog Friendly Accommodation

Most people who have a dog or any other pet prefer spending their holidays in self-catering holiday cottages as they will not only have all the comfort they need but also enough space for them and their dog. In addition, most holiday cottages are located by the countryside so you can take your dog for a walk any time you want. Some of the best holiday cottages in the country are in Devon, more precisely in the city of Dartmouth, so if you need a nice dog friendly cottage you can book a Dartmouth accommodation for your next holidays.

I need a real vacation

August 3, 2012 by Tricia

I would love to go on a real holiday. I haven’t been on a true vacation for oh … years! I just realized that yesterday when I was talking to someone about my sister and we were talking about “future plans” and I said something about how my sister and I always talk about taking a vacation together and we never do. I mean – we’ve been talking about going on a cruise or a vacation for about 15 years! I think it’s about time we do!

I’ve been so stressed in the last couple of weeks and just in the last few days my stomach is killing me. Maybe it’s the stress or maybe it’s the Crohn’s rearing it’s ugly head. I don’t know .. either way, if it settles down I was thinking that maybe towards the end of August I might try to get away for a week. I was just looking at a site that lists panama city beach house rentals and I was thinking that if my husband and I and maybe my sister and her boyfriend or maybe another couple went on holiday together renting out a beach house would be a wonderful idea. It would be a holiday that wouldn’t cost all that much, yet we’d be on or near the beach and in a touristy area with lots of things to do. I think it would be perfect.

I just have to talk my husband and sister in to taking some time off to go on a trip. My husband doesn’t really like to travel so maybe he won’t go .. we’ll see .. Hey someone has to take care of the dog anyway!
