Colorful leaves

This weeks theme is Rows

Heuchera Purple palace leaves

This weeks photo hunter theme is Rows. I don’t really tend to take photos of things in rows so this was a hard one for me to try to complete.

I chose this Heuchera leaf since the veins in the leaves are so well defined. They are in rows, angled rows, but rows none the less.

The Heuchera plant has very pretty leaves. It flowers, and while they are nice when they are around it’s the leaves that are the main attraction. If you have a shady area of your garden that you want to brighten up with some color try a heuchera with it’s colourful leaves.

What a beautiful photo

I love this photo!

To me it seems like the mother and baby elephant are laughing together as the sun sets.

I’m envious of my brothers. One lived in Africa for a few years, and another recently went there for a holiday. The holiday brother has also been to India recently and both of my brothers have likely seen sites like this one – or at least these animals in the wild.

One day I’d like to see a sight like this with my own eyes. How glorious that would be.

I can’t believe I got such a great camera

August 9, 2007 by Tricia

I’m so happy with my new camera! I think I’ve had the camera for about a month now and every time I take a photo with it I’m just amazed at how well they turn out. My other camera took great photos but it didn’t do so well with low light or night time conditions. My new SLR doesn’t seem to have a problem with low light – well provided that I make sure it’s at the correct settings.

I’m didn’t even read any digital camera articles before I bought my camera. Oh, I’d done some research on and off over the past year, but just prior to purchasing my camera I didn’t read any write ups about them. I just went to a few stores and tried the camera’s out. I checked all the settings and got a good feel for how each camera felt in my hands and ended up getting the Canon EOS 30D SLR Digital camera.

I’ve still got a lot to learn about my new camera and I definitely want to buy a macro and a telephoto lens for it, but I’m happy to putter with the accessories that the camera came with for now.

Do you love your camera?

A rose with it’s own sunrise

August 8, 2007 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

Morden Sunrise Rose

I can see why this rose is called Morden Sunrise. The inside of the bloom looks like the rising sun doesn’t it?

The weather was cool enough in July that this rose actually started to set rose hips! I plucked them all off so we’ll get another round of blooms or two. Certainly this heat wave that we’re currently going through should wake this lovely rose up again and make it bloom it’s pretty little head off.

Simple flowers – Simply beautiful

Blue Gentian

Blue Gentian Gentiana septemfida

I’ve been slow to get out and take photos of my blooming plants but the other day I went out for an hour and came back in with 279 photos! All but 4 were keepers.

The photo above is of blue Gentian. It’s a simple flower that blooms once or twice a year. It’s buds are interesting swirled cone shapes and then they open up into these delicate flowers.

The flowers above have a companion. Did you notice the ant?

Musk Mallow Malva moschata

Musk Mallow Malva moschata

The flower above is called Musk Mallow. It’s a North American native plant.

It’s very easy to grow, very hardy and as you can see it produces small delicate beautiful flowers. What more could you ask for in a plant?

Oh I know … did you know that you can eat the flowers and leaves of the musk mallow? The plant even has medicinal properties as well. I also believe that the root of the first flower, gentian is edible. See I grow a lot of plants that are not only beautiful, but edible as well.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
