Wordless Wednesday

this-is-how-i-roll

This little puppy needs to grow into it’s skin! Look at those cute little rolls! Isn’t this puppy absolutely adorable?

My little puppy seems to be doing better today. 2 movements and both were formed. That’s the first time in more than a week that that’s happened. She’s still on antibiotics and still getting her dry food mixed with rice.

I gave her, her 2nd does of worming meds yesterday afternoon. It’s called Drontal Plus and it’s not supposed to have any side effects, but just like last Tuesday when she had her first dose and her 2nd set of vaccinations, she got super hyperactive. The vet called to check on her and to let me know that we’re still waiting on cultures, but the test had at least come back negative for Giardia. I asked the vet if the worming meds might make her hyper and he said no, but she’s been hyper twice after having the medication.

Last night she was just pacing back and forth. The only time she was happy and fairly normal was when we were playing fetch with a rubber ball in the house, walking outside or playing in some other way. Otherwise she would get up on the couch with us and we’d try to settle her down but she then she’d jump off after 2 to 5 minutes, pace, drink water and come back begging to get up on the couch again. She was also whining constantly. This went on through the night whining in her crate. I don’t know if she was in pain or just felt strange but I’m certain that the worming meds were the cause.

Along with her almost normal movements today she’s acting a lot better. We’ve had a couple play sessions and walks today and right now she’s having a nap on the couch at my feet.

Vacationing with a puppy?

December 10, 2007 by Tricia

Now that we have a dog, well a puppy, our vacations might be a bit limited for a while. At least until we have Midnight trained. I mean, if we got someone to look after her while we went away for a week or two I’d want her to be house trained and hopefully a little calmer than she is right now.

BTW she’s still sick but I think she’s getting better. She’s on antibiotics for the runs that she’s been having just in case it’s a bacterial infection. The vet is running a culture and sensitivity test on her stool to determine just what might be making her so sick. She does have roundworm and that’s being treated too. I’ve been giving her water with gatorade mixed in, and her food is a little of her dried food mixed with rice and chicken broth. I’m trying my best to help her retain fluids so she’ll stay hydrated. Things are a little better than they were Friday and Saturday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she’ll be back to normal soon.

Anyway, once she’s over her illness and house trained I don’t see any reason why Chris and I couldn’t take a road trip with her. Maybe stay in pet friendly hotels or motels? Actually there’s
Pigeon Forge cabin rentals in TN, and they have some very nice pet friendly cabins that might be nice to stay in. I think we’ll have to make sure her chewing obsession has calmed down a bit before we can take her to such a nice place though.

Any other travel ideas for people with young dogs that must travel with them?

My sick little puppy

This weeks theme is LONG

I’ve had a very LONG day with this little cutie. As I said in an earlier post we had to take Midnight to the vet last night for the third time in two weeks.

It seems that I have a very sick puppy on my hands. She’s still active and alert, drinking and eating, but she’s a little sleepier than normal and of course she has the runs. BAD. Adding rice to her diet and the Pepto Bismal that the vet said I could give her – that I gave Friday evening, doesn’t seem to have done a thing to slow the passage of food through her system.

My Crohn’s is now acting up again as well. Probably due to a severe lack of sleep in the last two weeks thanks to my sick little puppy who’s nickname is now Squirt. (no that’s not a pun, it’s a reality!)

I know I’ve probably been talking a little too much about our new pup on this blog, but I’m so worried about her.

Yet another vet visit!

December 7, 2007 by Tricia

At 5:30 this morning I was going to write a post about adventures with a puppy – accidents in the night … I didn’t and well, my day has gone downhill from there.

As you can probably tell Puppy woke me up in the middle of the night after having a big accident in her crate. She’s got the runs. We don’t know if it’s from the bacterial infection she came to us with, the round worm that she’s been diagnosed with or the vaccinations and worming meds she got on Tuesday.

Either way, she’s continued to have the runs all day.

I spoke with one of the vets at the clinic at 9 am and we decided on how to treat her – watch her, add rice to her diet etc, but when her stools became watery at 6 pm after a day of going going going we decided that we’d better get her in to the vet.

So she’s had her third vet visit in the 14 days we’ve had her.:( Now she’s on Flagyl – a medication I’m very familiar with as I was on it long term myself for my Crohns, and another antibiotic. We’re also going to give her 1 ml of Pepto Bismol to see if that slows down her runs.

Another vet bill and another hefty bill. Ahhh …. why was it that I wasn’t going to get a dog from a rescue or shelter again? Oh yeah I wanted a healthy puppy with no long term problems (behavioral or health) to begin with … yeah that worked out.

There’s too much money flying out of our pockets lately!

December 6, 2007 by Tricia

I can’t believe how much money we’re spending on things lately!

Of course buying a puppy and all the items necessary to make her comfortable in our home was quite a hit to the wallet. So were her unexpected extra vet bills! She’s been to the vet twice and she’s only been with us 14 days! Remember she had a bacterial infection so she needed antibiotics and medications to settle her tummy?

Well we went to the vet on Tuesday evening for a check up and she got her second set of vaccination shots. Her stool was also checked again and this time the vet discovered Round worms! So she’s on more meds. She also has a slight infection in her left eye so we have to put ointment in her eyes twice a day.

I think the vet bills have come to about $600 so far.

Then, on Tuesday when Chris was driving to the other side of town to pick up the replacement light we needed for our DLP TV (that was $300) the drivers side window’s motor failed and the window was stuck half open.

Our cars been at the garage since Wednesday morning. They had to order a new motor for the window and that costs $400.

This is nuts!

We’ve also still got to buy a number of gifts for Christmas and then my niece, who’s having a baby in February, will be having a baby shower in the first week of January.

Ah the bills! The bills!
