Discover a Hobby – a resource site for hobbyists

July 11, 2007 by Tricia

Do you have a hobby? Sure you do. I think almost everyone has a hobby of one kind or another. Anyone who reads this site regularly knows that I have several interests and hobbies ranging from music, gardening, photography to keeping exotic pets.

What are your hobbies?

If you are interested in starting a hobby – a great thing to do if you have just quit smoking or if your trying to lose weight as a hobby will occupy you – or if you have a hobby that you want to learn more about you should visit Discover A Hobby. This site is a free online guide with information on 100 + hobbies.

The creator of the site, Duncan Davis, started this site a year ago and he spent a lot of time collecting links, articles, videos, highly recommended hobby related books and product information and put it all together on the Discover a Hobby site so that those interested in hobbies would be able to find useful information quickly and easily.

The site has information on hobbies ranging from collecting, sports, arts, music, extreme sports, games and one of my personal favs photography.

I’ve already bookmarked the photography section of this site. As you might already know I just purchased a digital SLR camera and while I’ve managed to figure out a lot of things on my own it sure would be nice to visit some sites that explained all the special features and techniques that I’ll now be able to do with my camera. I’m sure I’ll be spending a lot of time at Discover a Hobby.

Check out the site for yourself. I’m pretty sure you’ll find some useful information. You can even submit articles or links to helpful sites if you want to help build the site.

Stephen King on The Hour and surnames in China

June 13, 2007 by Tricia

I was just watching The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos on CBC. George used to be a Much Music V-Jay, then last year he hosted a US game show or talk show (The One?) that I think failed miserably, but his show “The Hour” is actually pretty cool.

He babbles away about great topics and ends up interviewing some pretty interesting people. I’ve just watched him interview Mia Farrow and now in a minute or two he’s going to be talking with Stephen King.

Just before his Stephen King interview begins he started talking about how common certain names are in the US. Smith of course is the most common name and King is the 30th most common surname. Did you know that in China with it’s population of about a billion people that there are only 100 surnames? There’s something like 97 million Wangs, and 98 million Lee’s and so on!

Hmmm 97 million Wangs. Why doesn’t that line sound quite right? LOL

Can you imagine trying to find someone in a phone book there? George said the Chinese goverment is finally going to allow people to combine last names so their kids could end up with the surname of the mother or father or perhaps a hyphenated surname. Hopefully this will make a few new surnames come into play. They certainly need some!

Now I’m going to watch one of my favorite authors … excuse me for a moment while I hang on to his every word.

Enjoy reading? Join Booksfree and have book rentals delivered to your home

March 22, 2007 by Tricia

Pretty much everyone has heard of Netflix right? Well, what if there was a company that offered a similar service, but for books and audiotapes? Good news! There is a service that offers book lovers on-line book rentals.

The service is called Booksfree, and it offers it’s members a wide selection of books and audio tapes. They have everything from the latest best sellers to the classics. Members can select from over 88,000 audio and paperback titles, fiction and non-fiction, from over 35,200 authors.

Books are expensive to purchase, and we all have busy lives and sometimes don’t have time to visit the local library to take out new books to read. Why not start a membership with Booksfree and have the audio tapes or books that you’d like to read shipped to you free of charge?

Booksfree offers several membership plans. You could have anywhere from two to 12 books shipped to you at once for as little as $8.49 to $34.99 per month. All membership plans include free shipping both ways, unlimited rentals, no due dates, and of course no late fees.

When you sign up for a membership you can create a list of titles that you’d like to rent and they’ll automatically ship the number of titles that your membership allows you to rent. The remaining titles on your list will be shipped in a future order. Return your titles in the pre-paid shipping envelope and your next title choices will be sent to you. It’s that easy.

A Booksfree membership would be great for an avid reader, a family or even as a gift for a relative. Perhaps you have an older relative that can’t get out as much as they used to, maybe a Booksfree membership would make an ideal gift?

At this time this service is only available to residents of the United States and it’s territories. I’m hopeful that the service will be available to Canadians and perhaps other countries sometime in the near future.
