My garden has lots of new Spring growth

April 12, 2011 by Tricia

I’m so happy that Spring is truly here after the long cold winter that we had here in Toronto. We had some rain this weekend and even some Thunderstorms on Sunday morning but once things started clearing up it warmed up outside and my husband and I took advantage of the good weather to get some much needed yard work done.

I had actually been out on Friday afternoon because I had a doctors appointment downtown and by the time I got back home it was quite nice outside so I brought the dog out to the front yard and I started cleaning up the front garden beds. Just taking the dead maple leaves off the garden that we’d put on the garden beds in the fall to protect the plants made such a difference and it was nice to discover how many plants were already growing beneath the leaves. By the time my husband came home from work on Friday I had the whole front yard done and he was surprised.

I usually don’t like working in the front yard by myself all that much because so many neighbors stop to talk. It’s not that I don’t like talking to them, it’s just that when I’m busy working on something, talking tends to slow me down and since I’m usually not feeling all that well I’m working outside on limited time anyway … so they eat up the time I can work on what I’m doing. Plus … being a nurse … I always end up having some strange conversations with people. I guess everyone wants health advice. Someone always asks me about a pain or health problem they’re having when they catch me outside and I’ve even been asking about things like what’s the best progesterone cream to use LOL. Hey … I answer what I can and advise them to see their doctor for the rest.

When the weather was clear enough my husband and I worked on tidying up the backyard garden beds and we managed to get all of the flower beds cleared of dead leaves too. Everything looks great now. I can’t believe how much green was hiding under all the dead leaves! There are so many plants coming up! Everything from Snowdrops to Lilies, to Monkshood, strawberry plants, Daffodil, Hyacinth, Tulip and Iris leaves are all coming up too. Most of my Crocuses, at least in the backyard, are blooming and soon I’ll have quite a variety of other spring flowers blooming. I just love spring.

Is your garden or yard coming back to life after the long cold winter?

Spring has arrived

April 6, 2011 by Tricia

Spring has definitely arrived in my garden. My crocuses have been blooming for the past week and now each day when I look out my window I see new growth in my garden beds.

Tulip, Daffodil and Iris leaves are pushing up through the ground and soon there will be other plants showing signs of life.

I’m so pleased to see more and more crocus flowers coming up and I know that in just a week or two I’ll have quite a variety of spring flowers in my yard. I love spring it’s definitely one of my favorite seasons. If you don’t grow your own flowers I hear that there are some good ProFlowers discounts that you might be interested in taking advantage of if your craving spring flowers too.

I’ll bring my camera outside with me tomorrow if the weather is nice and take some pictures of the crocuses in bloom and then I’ll post some pictures.

Winter is coming soon!

November 3, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t believe that it’s already November. It seems like the last couple of months have just flown by.

It’s getting colder here too. Our furnace has been on several times each day over the last week or so. I guess it won’t be long before I’ll be pulling out our winter coats, hats and gloves.

I was looking out my kitchen window at my backyard and some of my neighbors backyards and I realized that we still have a lot of work to do to prepare for winter. We’ve done some yard work such as putting away the patio table and gathering up the solar lights and so on, but we still have to tidy up the garden beds and empty the pots and planters that held all of the annuals.

My neighbors are much further ahead then we are. One of our neighbors plant their whole backyard with veggies in early summer and they just cleared everything out a week or so ago so their yard is just soil now. Another neighbor was working in his backyard today, putting away his plant pots and other gardening tools and making sure the hot tub cover is secure and he moved his BBQ right outside his patio door for easy winter barbecuing.

Hopefully it’s not too cold this coming weekend, because we’re going to have to get out there and get all of the work done that needs to be done before winter arrives.

Oh and on Saturday I saw my first snow! How sad. My husband and I were standing in the kitchen and we both saw what we at first thought was rain, but then we realized that it was snow falling. It actually snowed hard enough that the ground was wet for a while afterwords. Thankfully it melted right away!

Is it getting colder in your area too? Have you seen any snow yet?

A Beautiful Fall Day

October 16, 2010 by Tricia

It was a nice Fall day here in Toronto. My husband and I decided that since it was so nice out we’d better get outside and get some of our outdoor work done.

I spent some time tidying up the front garden beds. Some of the roses had grown and their branches were starting to block part of the front walkway.

My husband has spent some time over the last month repairing the parging on our foundation at the side of the house whenever the weather has been nice enough to do this kind of work. He had finished repairing the parging, but it needed to be sealed so he spent some time sealing the foundation this afternoon.

It’s supposed to be nice tomorrow as well, so maybe we’ll do a little bit of work in our backyard garden. I know that my husband wants to take our Patio table apart and get it stored for winter.

Winter … man I can’t believe I’m saying that word already, but I guess it’s coming – and soon. It will really only be a couple of weeks, and then we’ll be outside hanging our led christmas lights. That’s definitely something we need to do before it starts snowing.

Did you have nice weather in your area today? Did you get outside and enjoy it? Are you like us, trying to get some yard work done before it gets too cold?

Rainy days

June 2, 2010 by Tricia

It’s raining raining raining! I’m not going to complain about the rain though – we need it! This has been one of the driest years here in Toronto in a long time and my garden is loving all the rain.

Actually as I said in some of my recent posts we spent ALL of this last weekend tidying up the garden and planting new plants. We also spent a good portion of the weekend before last working on the garden, setting up the outdoor furniture and putting in the solar lights so now that it’s raining cats and dogs I’m happy that my new plants are being watered.

The last week of May was really hot here too and we were starting to water every evening so this rain is going to save us some money on our water bill too.

How’s the weather in your area? Are you happy sometimes when it rains or do you hate it? I just hope that the rain stops by the weekend .. I’d like to get out and enjoy the slightly cooler weather we’re having if I can. I think this summer’s going to be a really hot one!
