The English Rose – Abraham Darby

The beauties above are a popular English Rose called Abraham Darby. Aren’t they just beautiful?

Abraham Darby also has a lovely, intoxicating scent.

I grew this rose for two years, but sadly, last winter was mild and my roses didn’t have enough winter protection, and when it did get very cold during the winter some of my roses must have been damaged as I lost at least five rose bushes last year. Abraham Darby was one that I lost and I miss it dearly.

Whenever I was in a garden center, nursery or even a home hardware type store that sold roses (Home Depot anyone?) last spring and summer I searched for Abraham Darby. I couldn’t find a replacement. It’s probably just as well that I didn’t find it as I should be able to get a good quality one from one of my favorite rose mail order nurseries.

I guess this post will serve as a reminder to me to take a look for this rose online and place an order for spring delivery!

Of course that’s a risky endeavor as I’ll probably end up ordering a bunch of fancy hybrid spring flower bulbs too! It could get expensive!

Have you ever placed a mail order or online order at a nursery for plants, bushes or spring bulbs? If you have – what’s your favorite mail order or online nursery?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!

January in the garden

Strawberry planter covered in snow

I didn’t bring my clay strawberry planters indoors this winter and after a snow storm here’s how one of them looks after a snow storm.

It’s strange.

They must absorb some heat from the sun even on cool days as the snow always melts around the planters and other objects resting on the stones around my raised beds or on my patio so much faster than it does anywhere else.

Here’s a shot of my garden as I stand near the patio looking towards the back of the yard …

Planters and birdfeeders covered in snow

My garden isn’t that attractive in the winter, but at least there’s something to look at when I peer out my kitchen windows!

Garden Peonies

I hate to complain, it being winter and all … but it’s so COLD here in Toronto! This morning it was 16 Celsius or -21 C with the wind chill ( -5.8 F) it’s warmed up a bit since then … it’s -11 Celsius now or oops maybe it hasn’t warmed up as it’s -22 ( -7.6 F) with the wind chill. That’s darn cold!

So, as I was browsing through my photos to find a nice garden picture for Green Thumb Sunday I of course ended up picking out a photo of a nice late spring/ early summer flower.

The above photo is of Garden Peonies. I don’t know the name of this variety as all it said on the tag when I bought it was that it was an Amsterdam Garden Peony. So I guess that means it’s kind of generic right?

I don’t care whether it’s a common garden variety or a rare hybrid … it’s pretty isn’t it?

Unfortunately where I have this peony planted in my front garden bed the soil tends to be a bit dry. I don’t think I watered enough in the early season last spring and I didn’t end up with any peony flowers. What a shame. I think I’d moved the plant the Autumn before as well so maybe that’s why it didn’t bloom. Anyway, I’m certainly hoping that it blooms this year!

Snow covered pine branches

Mugo pine branch covered in snow

This is a photo of a dwarf Mugo pine branch that’s been dusted in snow. I took this photo a couple of weeks ago after a big snow storm came through town.

When we bought our house it came with three dwarf pines in large barrel planters at the front of the house. The planters are actually in the walkway between our house and our neighbors. Usually I decorate the pines each winter with clear LED lights and tiny red bows on some of the branches and they look quite lovely. I didn’t decorate them this year for the holidays, but that snowfall added a beautiful touch.

Do you have any plants around your home that look inviting after a snowfall?

A pretty little rose

January 9, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

This is a beautiful English Rose called Sharifa Asma. It has a lovely perfume like scent, but unlike some of my other roses the scent doesn’t waft in the air for any great distance. This is a rose that you must get up close to in order to appreciate it’s beauty and lovely scent.

I just love my roses. I grow a number of English roses, Antique roses, Hybrid teas and Floribundas. I wonder what will happen when spring and summer comes along and my puppy gets to spend more time in the backyard garden? I hope my roses survive!
