I need more of these perfume delights

I was just saying the other day how much I love flowers. Of course that’s common knowledge to anyone who has visited at least three of my blogs where I frequently discuss my garden and the plants I grow in it.

This rose, Compte de Chambord, is one of my all time favorite roses. It’s an antique rose and it has a beautiful heavy rose perfume scent that wafts in the air in the early morning, after a rain or after I’ve watered the garden.

I don’t think I’ll lose any roses this winter since there’s been such a nice snow cover protecting them – although we’re about to have a heavy ice storm later this evening and through the night – but if I do manage to lose any roses I think I’ll look for more Compte de Chambord roses.

Two or three more would be perfect. Unfortunately I don’t have any room for more at this time since I’ve already got more than 60 roses and God only knows how many hundreds of bulbs and perennials. No, I’m not hoping to lose any plants in order to make room, but eventually some will die out or be damaged from our harsh winters and now I know just what I’ll replace those plants with when they go!

Anyone else grow Antique roses?

Can’t wait for the flowers to grow? Buy a bouquet!

March 1, 2008 by Tricia

I think just about anyone that’s visited this blog a few times knows that I absolutely adore flowers. Hardly a week goes by when I don’t post at least one photo of the flowers I grow in my garden. I’m so thankful for the photos that I have considering that I live in such a cold climate! I mean, I can’t enjoy my love of flowers any other way during our long winter … or can I?

I could of course purchase fresh Flowers from a site such as e-florists-inc to get me through the next month or two until my own flowers are blooming. You could too if you wanted to brighten your home with a lovely bouquet. After all there’s nothing quite like a beautiful floral arrangement as the center piece on the dinner table when you’re having a romantic dinner with someone you love.

You can find some beautiful flower selections at e-florists-inc. You can shop by the type of flower or plant, or by the occasion as they have arrangements that are perfect for birthdays, the birth of a baby, for Mom or to say congratulations to a friend or co-worker just to name a few of the selections from which you can choose.

roses.jpg If you purchase one of their best selling arrangements you can get it for up to 50% off as they’ve already reduced the prices on their most popular bouquets and gift baskets. I really like the white rose and white lily arrangement that I’ve include to the right. Isn’t it lovely?

If you’ve been thinking of buying some flowers for your home or as a special occasion gift for someone do take a look at their selection. They have some lovely arrangements. Easter’s coming up soon, perhaps you’ll want some flowers for your home at that time?

I spent quite a bit of time browsing through the site since I’m just fascinated with flowers. If you’re as interested in flowers as I am or if you’d like to learn more about how a Blossom develops and how flowers have become masters at attracting certain types of insects in order to pollinate you should take a look at the Wikipedia article that I found. It will answering any possible questions that you have about blossoms!

Only a month or so more ’till spring

Chionodoxa

I can’t wait until Spring arrives.

I was just saying on my gardening blog how protective all the snow we’ve gotten this year is for the garden, but still … enough is enough. I’m ready for nicer weather.

I miss seeing pretty flowers like these lovely Chionodoxa that bloom from mid spring to early summer.

Delicate Iris I also miss delicate miniature irises such as the one that I’ve included to the right.

Do you have a favorite spring flower? Perhaps tulips? Crocus’, Hyacinths, Muscari, snow drops, daffodils, iris, helebores, bleeding hearts or one of the many other kinds of spring flowers?

Do one of these flowers get your heart racing in anticipation of spring and the good weather to come?

I think this will be one of my favorite roses in my garden this summer. It’s Chicago Peace, a hybrid tea, and I just started growing it last summer.

It’s choke full of petals and the blooms are quite large. It’s a can’t miss flower once it’s blooming in the garden.

I planted it near my patio so that I can enjoy it’s beauty when I’m sitting outside in the summer or perhaps entertaining guests outdoors.

Chicago Peace has a light scent. I’ve found you have to get close to the rose to pick up it’s scent, but once you can smell it it’s quite nice.

Sorry I haven’t posted for a while. I’ve been feeling absolutely terrible this week! Plus, as I explained on my gardening blog my mouse died yesterday and our internet connections been on and off thanks to heavy ice storms and rain!

The scent of Hyacinth

Purple Hyacinth looks blue

Sick of winter? Me too. I’m so looking forward to spring!

Lately whenever we go to the grocery store, a home and garden store of even some department stores I’m greeted by the scent of Hyacinth. Many stores are selling bulbs that have been chilled and forced to bloom. Perhaps you’ve purchased some of these prepared bulbs and have hyacinths blooming in your home right now?

If you do have some of these forced Hyacinth bulbs in your home, and if you live in a climate that gets cool in the winter be sure to plant the bulbs in your garden this spring. They won’t bloom again this year, but they will more than likely bloom right in your garden next spring. If you’ve purchased any other forced spring bulbs – like tulips or daffodils – you can plant those in your garden when they die down too.

The photo above is of one of my purple hyacinths. It looks blue though doesn’t it?

Only in the first winter that we had our house did I get the urge to buy some of those forced hyacinths … the rest of the time I’ve suffered through winter without the scent of hyacinth blooms indoors … forced to wait until all my bulbs come up in my garden each spring. Oh but when they do bloom in the spring the garden is just intoxicating to stroll in! Also, if we happen to have a nice warm spring day and it’s nice enough to open the windows the scent of hyacinth wafts into the house too. It’s beautiful!

Do you grow hyacinth? Indoors or outdoors?
