A lovely spring weekend in the city

white Tulips

Such a dreamy picture of some of the white tulips that I grow in my garden …. It’s the perfect time for a gardener to be dreaming of tulips and other spring flowers too. The weather is finally beginning to warm up and all the plants in my garden are beginning to come out of their dormant state.

I was just saying on my gardening blog that it’s such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I expect to go outside this afternoon and tidy up my garden. Hopefully I don’t become obsessed and stay out there for hours!

We’d also like to take our dog out for a good walk today.

Last weekend we went to Cherry Beach twice (although Sunday was super cold and windy, especially at the beach, so we ended up going to The Brickworks for our walk). It was beautiful! Yesterday we ended up going to The Beach and walking on the boardwalk. So today … if I can pry myself away from the computer and then from the garden, we’d like to go to Cherry beach again.

I just love living in Toronto. The weathers fairly nice most of the year (not this past winter!) and there are so many things to do. I love it. Plus now that we have a dog we have more incentive to get out and enjoy what this great city has to offer.

What have you been doing on this beautiful spring weekend? Working in the garden or doing something outside as you enjoy the great weather?

What’s blooming in your garden?

Pink Tulip

So far we don’t have any spring flowers blooming in our garden. In fact most of our yard and garden beds are still covered in snow. However, I’m sure that’s not the case for everyone! Surely some of you are starting to see spring flowers?

I’m getting antsy to see our plants start to sprout from the ground. It’s warming up and the snows melting so I know I won’t have to wait much longer.

The flower that I’ve posted today is one of my Angelique tulips. This is a double flowering tulip. When it blooms it has an abundance of petals and almost looks like a rose. It’s lovely and it has a nice light scent as well.

Major case of cabin fever

Globe flower 9

Spring arrived on Thursday, but so far you’d never know it wasn’t still winter here in Toronto. It’s been cold and it’s going to continue to be cold for at least another week. We’re even going to get some more snow tomorrow and later in the week – ice pellets.

Like many other cities this was the worst winter that we’ve experienced in years, with almost record setting snow falls! Oops. Perhaps I shouldn’t say that out loud as we only need 20 cm more to break our previous record and I think we’ve got until June to break it. Please please please don’t snow until June!

I think I’ve got a bad case of Cabin Fever. I’m just dying to see my garden again. Those first green sprouts coming up out of the ground are a joyful sign of better days to come.

The flowers I’m showing you today are Globe Flowers. They tend to bloom in Late May or in June and when they do bloom they flower for about three weeks at a time. They’ll even rebloom in August or early September if you cut down their flower stalks once they’ve finished blooming.

Globe flowers are very pretty and their bright yellow sure lights up the garden.

I grow mine in a small flower bed just at the end of my driveway.

Do you grow any flowers in your garden that just seem to really brighten everything up?

My favorite spring flowers

Coral Hyacinth

I haven’t made any secret of the fact that I’m looking forward to spring more than ever this year. It’s been a long cold and snowy winter and I’m more than ready for it to end.

Over on my gardening blog I was just talking about which flowers and plants I expect to see emerge from the snow and ground first. Of course the crocus’ will likely come first. I think they’ve been the first to emerge just about every year that I’ve had a garden.

The muscari (grape hyacinth), hyacinths, hellebores and iris’ will quickly follow and before I know it my garden will be full of life again. Oh and I’ll have a heck of a lot of work to do to keep it looking nice too!

One of my favorite spring flowers are the hyacinths. I just love these coral ones. I must get more of those this fall.

Each year as the snow begins to disappear and my garden begins to peek out from under the snow I look at in excitement to see which plants are actually growing even though the ground is still quite cold. Almost always I’ll see that my many strawberry plants are green and often I’ll note that the heuchera’s have not only emerged but are growing leaves too!

Heuchura

Do you have plants that seem to begin to grow while still under the snow? Which ones?

It’s Easter this weekend. If you don’t grow your own flowers why not send some to someone you love?

Longing for some greenery!

DSC02016

After all the snow and ice storms this week, and of course after shoveling snow for approximately five hours yesterday and early this morning I’m tired of seeing white everywhere. I’d like nothing more than to see some green (yes green money too would be nice!).

I really can’t wait for Spring and better weather to arrive. As I write this post I’m lying on the couch. My back is aching from all the shoveling I did. Actually it’s not just aching, it’s spasming. Ow! I sure hope it’s better in the morning when I get up!

The photo above was taken last year I believe. It’s one of my hostas. I’d taken the photo while I was outside looking at the garden as it rained lightly. I think I took quite a few photos that day of plants and flowers with raindrops on them.

So were you hit by all the snow storms passing through Eastern North America? Are you more than ready for spring after that storm? I sure am! It feels like winter won’t ever go away. Maybe I should just embrace winter and look for some Winter Park real estate instead of pining for spring?
