A cluster of lovely red tulips

June 11, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

fringed red tulips

These tulips are long gone, but I couldn’t help wanting to show you how lovely a group of brilliant red fringed tulips look when a group of them are growing together in a garden bed.

These beauties made a lovely distraction as they were growing in front of several roses that were just growing their leaves as the tulips were blooming. Now the tulips are gone and the rose bushes are full of leaves and in the last few days the rose bushes have started blooming too.

Colorful tulips!

We’re currently having a heatwave and thunder storms here in Toronto. My flowers are blooming, but once the weather gets done with them I’m not sure that they’ll have any petals left!

Here’s a look at some tulips that were blooming up until the last week or so:

orange tulips

As well as this fiery red fringed tulip –

I’m afraid the heat and rain ruined their blooms, but like I said the roses are blooming. There’s always something to enjoy in my garden.

BTW yes this post is a day late. I had yet another eye allergy on Saturday that left me with both eyes painful, blurry and sensitive to light for two days. I wasn’t able to post or do much of anything. Hence the late post. Sorry!

Waiting for blooms

Geranium Johnson's Blue

My garden is at the awkward stage that comes every year around this time.

The tulips are still in bloom, but they are aging and will soon be gone. The roses are in bud but haven’t flowered yet. The clematis, peonies, Rhododendron, and Johnson’s Blue Geranium (above) are also in bud ….

But I’m waiting for blooms.

Don’t get me wrong. The garden looks lovely. However, after the long cold very snowy winter we had this year I’m longing for those bursts of color in the garden that I so enjoy.

I’m thankful that I have so many pictures to look at as I wait to see these plants burst with new blossoms.

Grape Hyacinths and hosta – Oh My!

Muscari and Hosta 2

Don’t these grape hyacinths (muscari) look just lovely in front of the yellow green leaves of Hosta Sum and Substance? It’s a lovely color combination isn’t it?

This photo was actually taken last summer. I’ve been too busy this week to get the photos of the garden that I did take this past week transfered from my camera to the computer. If anything the muscari looks even nicer this year. I will get to those photos shortly!

I picked this picture for this post because I thought it might look great with the new theme for Tricia’s Musings too.

My garden is doing wonderfully this year. There’s only one rose that’s struggling and all the rest of the roses and other plants seem to be doing well. I think we’ll really enjoy our backyard this year.

Oh speaking of enjoying the backyard and garden, our puppies having fun with it too. Yesterday we watered the garden and of course Midnight was outside with us on her leash. She loves the garden hose. She spent all her time trying to get her head and mouth under the water. I kept telling her that she’s going to love that cool hose water come summer.

Such a nice tidy garden this year

My garden is just lovely this year. I think it’s doing well because it had so much so cover this past winter and because I actually got out there and tidied it up and did quite a bit of garden maintenance work this spring. I know last spring I was feeling really ill and I just couldn’t get myself motivated to get outside and do a lot of garden work all at once.See how it’s paying off?

This is just a small portion of my garden. These daylilies and astilbe are in what I call the oval which separates the patio area near the house from the back lawn.

This is what my backyard looked like on May 1st.

It isn’t spectacular but it’s neat and tidy and shows lots of promise. The plants have grown in the past week too, plus new ones have come up so the raised garden beds look even fuller now. Click on the photo to see a large image in my flickr account if you want to see more details.

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there.
