Choose The Perfect Greenhouse Suited To Your Garden And Budget

March 6, 2013 by Trish

You have many different possibilities when it comes to choosing a greenhouse, you can choose to start small with an inexpensive starter greenhouse or a larger greenhouse that is created to be the centre of your garden. It can be difficult trying to decide what greenhouse kit is perfect for you, to give you a little help, read on to help try and discover the perfect greenhouse kit for your plants and lifestyle.

Look At the Variety of Greenhouse Kits

There are many different styles of greenhouses; this can include different shapes, styles, sizes and materials. You should start by considering the amount of plants you want to include in your greenhouse and whether you want to grow this amount in the near future. Your greenhouse should not be crammed full of plants, otherwise you will find that they are going to struggle to grow and you will not be getting the full benefits of using a greenhouse.

The light diffusion of greenhouse coverings can differ greatly, with different coverings providing better environments for plant growth. The different styles of greenhouses include glass, plastic and solexx, it is thought that glass and solexx provide the best environment for growth.

If you are just starting out you will probably be better off choosing a plastic greenhouse, this is because they are much cheaper and they can be easily moved so you can find the best place for it in your garden without making any long lasting decisions.

How Long Do You Wish To Grow Your Plants For?

Choosing your greenhouse should depend whether you are completing a short term or long term growth plan. Not all greenhouses will provide your plants for steady growth all through the year, so if you are planning to grow all year round you should be prepared to pay the price for this.

Choose a Greenhouse with Strength and Durability

A good greenhouse should be able to stand up to daily weather and harsh weather without a problem. You should make yourself aware of what potential hazards there are to your greenhouse, this can include falling branches, rocks, debris, wind, rain and snow.

Your greenhouse should be able to withstand all weather situations, to check that you are choosing a good quality greenhouse you should test its abilities by shaking it and spraying hose water directly at it, this will ensure it will not provide you with any problems.

Maintain Your Greenhouse

It is important that you create the time to maintain your greenhouse. In the summer it is likely that a lot of dirt will attach itself to your greenhouse. You should be able to manoeuvre easily around the greenhouse to clean all areas of it successfully.

Lilies Flower Guide

October 4, 2012 by Trish

Lilies are a work of art from nature. This flower is everything a flower should be; it has strong colour and an elegant shape. The slightest variation in tone and you are already sending an entirely different message to the world.

Give white lilies to someone you feel is serene and pure, as this is what this flower symbolises, and is sure to fit their personality well. For someone with a strong and proud nature a bouquet of orange lilies will suit the strength of their personality.

Start using orange lilies in your fall décor; this is the flower you should be looking at first, as it has the warm shades needed to suit the season. This flower will make a great impression as part of an arrangement for an autumn party. Yellow and red lilies are also suitable, either in a single colour arrangement or in a combination of all three colours. These can also be combined with roses or gerberas to suit

The petals of this flower may appear to be delicate, but it is actually among the more long-lasting of blooms. So you can use it for events that stretch over a longer period. Conference tables, reading lecterns and side tables can all be decorated with lilies. The lily is large enough to make an impression in a bigger space, such as on stage, or around a gateway, where a smaller bloom would appear insignificant.

For the bride-to-be planning an autumn wedding this bloom really has the endurance and beauty to outlast the ceremony. A particular favourite for a bridal bouquet is the simplest possible posy of pure white lilies tied together with string or raffia.

Though the calla lily is a floral favourite, what many people do not know is that it is not actually a lily at all, but belongs to a different family. But it does not matter, as they are equal in their beauty.

One favourite idea of mine is to give this flower as an accessory to a gift, for example, floral bouquets for birthdays do not need to be extravagant. A single lily arranged in wrapping paper and tied with ribbon, will not go unappreciated. Send this flower accompanied by a small box of chocolates for total delight.

This flower is also appropriate as a special surprise for you partner or spouse, as it conveys the meaning of ‘Gentle Love’. Send lilies as a quick reminder of your love.

Finally! Some Rain!

August 10, 2012 by Tricia

I’m so happy that we’re finally starting to get some rain. It’s been so very hot and dry here in Toronto for the last two months that my poor garden has been having a terrible time.

It’s been cloudy and overcast this week. It wasn’t looking like rain yesterday, even though it was cloudy, but at one point in the afternoon I was surprised when I looked out and saw that it has started to rain lightly. I really needed to water my garden yesterday so I was happy for the rain … then when I woke up this morning it was really raining and it’s been raining all day.

I know most people probably wouldn’t be happy to see rain, but we really need it. I’m sure anyone with a garden understands .. unless your someone who’s been getting too much rain! I know that’s been happening in some areas too. It’s either drought or too damp this year it seems.

Anyway .. here’s one of my very happy roses. It’s Sharifa Asma. A lovely old rose fragrance and full petaled flower. I just love this rose.

Thankful for the rain

August 1, 2012 by Tricia

Is it hot enough for you?

This has been a hot dry summer for the most part in many areas. Here in Toronto we’re used to having a fairly hot and humid summer but we normally get quite a bit more rain than we’ve had in the last two months.

I’m thankful that we’ve had some rain in the last week. We’ve actually had two extremely good rain storms in the last three or four days. I’m sure my garden is very happy now with all the moisture.

Actually the rain we received in the last few days was accompanied by thunder and lightening so I know my plants were really happy. Did you know that when there is lightening it puts free nitrogen into the air and the plants just suck that up and that’s one of the main reasons why you see plants have a huge spurt of growth after a lightening storm?

Gaillardia Flower

Oh yes … I’m going to have some very pretty flowers in a week or two! Thank you stormy days! I never thought I’d be thankful for a storm. Believe me, I hate thunder. You’d think I’d dislike lightening but it’s the thunder that I hate the most. It’s the sound .. so I really don’t like it all that much when we have thunder storms, but I know my garden needs the rain and all the goodness that a storm brings. Particularly when it’s been so dry for the last several months.

How has the weather been in your area? Has it been warm and overly dry in your city too? I just remembered that last week they actually banned fires in the city. I don’t know if that ban is still on now that we’ve had some rain, but that’s how dry it’s been.

My gigantic rose bush is blooming

June 2, 2012 by Tricia

I’ve been using some of my spare time to work in my garden. I don’t seem to have as much spare time this spring as I have other years, but I’m trying!

I’m slowly getting the annual flowers that I purchased a week or two ago planted in the garden and I’ve been trimming and pruning the roses and other plants as I work in the garden. It’s amazing how fast some of my roses grow.

One of my roses – William Baffin – a Canadian Explorer rose, is absolutely gigantic. I was taking pictures of it the other day because it’s in it’s first huge spring flush and it’s just heavy with flowers. I swear there are well over 1000 roses on the plant. There could even be 2000 roses. I kid you not. The rose is at least 16 feet tall and maybe 12 feet wide. It’s almost impossible to take a decent picture of the whole bush in my tiny yard because I can’t get far enough away from the rose to take a full picture.

Unfortunately it rained all day yesterday and that beautiful rose plant couldn’t take all the rain. A lot of the big branches in the center that were heavy with roses drooped to the ground and now it’s going to take two or three of us to lift them up and get them standing again. The rose is just too big!

Considering where the big branches fell it might be a good thing that the outdoor dining set at BistroSets.com that I ordered didn’t arrive yet because that’s just where I was planning on putting it. It would have been toppled over by the huge rose branches. I know most people don’t think of a rose plant as being so huge it could be destructive, but I know it’s possible.
