Thirteen Things about TRICIA in the GARDEN

1…. I think I sprained my ankle today. It hurts when I walk on it or move it but it’s not swollen or bruised. Yet.

2…. I did it running after a RAT!
3…. Yep, it seems we have a few Rats in the neighborhood. Probably some human ones, but I’m talking about the cute brown ones.
4…. Yes I actually thought the rats were kind of cute compared to the pigeons that flock to our yard anyway, at least the rats are smart.
5…. I had thrown some left over French fries into the backyard for the birds or squirrels to eat. They like their junk food too. Apparently rats also love French fries.
6…. It was amusing to watch the rat in the middle of the yard, French fry in mouth, pat at one of the small birds (House Wren?) with it’s paws as if telling it to get away from it’s fries.
7…. When I’d had enough of seeing the rat sneaking back and forth from yard to hidey hole in the neighbors yard I ran at it to try to scare it and that’s when I twisted my ankle.
8…. Now, I suppose we’ll have to do something to get rid of the rats. One neighbor suggested rat traps, but my hubby and I are such animal lovers I can just see us looking at a dead animal in a trap and bursting out in tears at what we’d done. Any suggestions?
9…. Speaking of neighbors, my husband met one of ours on the street when she was bringing her child home from daycare and invited her into the backyard. I don’t know why but I dislike this woman. There are very few people in this world that I dislike, only three that I can think of at this moment, and for some unknown reason she’s one of them. The other two I have good reason to dislike.
10…. This neighbor brought her 20 month old daughter into the yard and let her loose. I was the one running after the kid, worrying that she’d fall on our landscaping stones and hurt her head. Mom was too busy rattling off why she’d been fired from her last job to care.
11…. Then the little girl started trying to pick the flowers. Fine I don’t mind a few damaged flowers or even some of my flowers being picked.
12…. But the little girl also started EATING the flowers! Luckily they were tulip petals, which I was pretty sure at the time were non-toxic, but did check on again on the computer when they finally left. It was kind of funny because the little girl was chewing on them like they were the greatest snack, however, I kept cautioning the mom to not let her eat the flowers as I wasn’t sure if they were safe or not.
13…. Now I’m hoping that I’m right and the tulip petals were fine and that the child is fine … otherwise I’m sure this woman wouldn’t hesitate to sue. Aarrrgh! Stupid people!

Thirteen Things about Tricia

1…. I hear noises in my house when everyone else is in bed asleep. Sometimes it sounds like music is playing faintly in the distance.

2…. Our house used to be owned in the 1940’s by a man that fixed radios for a living- in the home. We found papers and receipts stuck in the baseboards when we were renovating that led us to this conclusion. Things that make you go hmmm?

3…. I stay up way too late every night (3 a.m. to 6 a.m.) and need to start getting to bed earlier. Maybe that’s why I’m hearing strange sounds in the night?

4…. I love to cook but haven’t done as many home cooked (made from scratch) meals as I like lately. I’ve been cheating with pre-made frozen stir fries, or already made hamburgers.

5…. I’m more than 6 inches taller than my husband. Our wedding pictures look funny. We have one with him standing on a chair to kiss me.

6…. I got sent home from a school 3 day outdoor camping trip when I was 13 because I got caught skinny dipping with a few other students.

7…. I wouldn’t eat cooked veggies when I was a kid no matter how my mother made them, but I would eat a number of them raw. So it wasn’t all that unusual for everyone else to be eating mashed potatoes or boiled turnip (yuck) and green beans, and for me to have each of these items raw on my plate. I still like raw green beans and potatoes.

8…. My parents were in their mid forties when I was born, and my oldest brother is almost 20 years older than I am.

9…. My eyes are Hazel but when I’m tired or have been crying they turn brilliant green, and when I’m feeling ill they have a yellow tinge to them.

10…. I don’t think I have a favorite color – I like several shades of most colors.

11…. My favorite meal is a nice juicy rare steak, but I can’t eat that very often because my tummy doesn’t like it lately.

12…. I’m reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown right now and I’m loving it. I think it might actually be better than the Da Vinci Code.

13…. I’m going to post a grilled vegetable recipe tomorrow that you should come back for and try on the weekend. It’s fantastic. I haven’t had one person tell me that they didn’t like it and most come back for seconds and thirds and …

Thursday Thirteen Take #1

March 2, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about Tricia
1…. I hate Mondays! And Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and even Sundays, IF they are the start of my work week, that is. You see I work shift work as a nurse, so whichever day is the First day of my work week- well, it’s a Monday to me, even if it isn’t.2….I love reptiles. No, not the human kind … really, the reptile kind. I’ve been keeping reptiles of one kind or another since I was a kid. Check out my main site if you don’t believe me!

3…. Speaking of Reptiles- I just had an offer to write an article for Reptiles USA magazine! Whoohoo! If it goes through this will be my 5th article for a magazine.

4…. I also love my garden. When I was a child we always had a flower and vegetable garden in the back yard, and two veggie gardens up at the cottage. My job was to pull the weeds! Yuck! I thought I hated gardening. Skip forward to 4.5 years ago when we purchased our house and what’s one of the first things I do? I design a beautifully landscaped garden. It’s where I go to relax. I must have done a good job of it too because people just walk in off the street to have a look. Makes me proud but it’s kind of creepy having strangers walk into your yard as well.

5….Photography. Well that goes right along with my love of gardening and reptiles- doesn’t it? I mean I gotta take great pictures of my pretty flowers and my pets, don’t I? Expect to see the occasional garden photo on this site. I also have some pretty cool pictures of Toronto and the surrounding area.

6…. I have the best husband in the world. Yeah he’s a talkaholic (see wandering husband post), and he can be messy at times, but he’s a good one. I think I’ll keep him.

7…. I’m a klutz! If there is a great big hole in front of me you can pretty much guarantee that I’ll fall in it. In fact I did just that, last summer! Much to my friends amusement. I fall up a staircase- not down it, I trip over my own feet and other peoples! I’m not as bad as I used to be, I guess I’ve learned how to hide my klutziness over the years, but when I do a klutz move you can bet it’s a doozy!

8…. I moved to Toronto to become a professional make-up artist and got side tracked along the way and became a jeweler instead. By jeweler I don’t mean selling jewelery- I mean making it, as in working in the Jewelery trade. For a time I was the first and only female diamond cutter in North America. When the recession hit in the early 90’s I moved on career wise.

9…. While I was a jeweler I completed my Make-up artist certificate and also got my special effects make up certificate. Everyone calls me at Halloween, I wonder why??? LOL I never did either job professionally though.

10…. Wow, I was a busy, busy girl back then. I also tried to become an actress while I was a jeweler. It was a life long dream and how I originally became interested in becoming a make up artist in the first place. I did a lot of extra work on films and commercials and got a few roles over the years, but I never did well enough to close down my business and pursue it full time. It was pretty interesting though.

11…. While I worked in the jewelery trade I met a lot of interesting and often very wealthy people. First let me tell you that the majority of people that work inside the trade are not originally from North America, most are from Europe (Russia) or the middle east. There are very few women in the trade so I guess I stood out. I was proposed to approximately 13 times by different men. One man asked me to marry him every time he came to my shop- and he was serious! Talk about pressure! Oh and the advice I got from my friends wasn’t really helpful at all- they advised me to marry for money. Sorry no- I just couldn’t do that. Nope- I wanted to marry for love. Oh did I tell you that my husband was also a jeweler? So in the end I did marry for love after all, ain’t that sweet? But I’m not rich- my husband wasn’t one of the wealthy suitors. Oh well!

12….I guess I’m on my third career now. I’m an emergency department nurse now. Busy busy busy, but I love it. I don’t know why I was complaining about Mondays at the beginning of this post though. I’ve been off work for more than 3 months due to illness and right now I think I would gladly work on a Monday. I’m kind of bored and I miss the quirky place. Once I get back to work I’m sure I’ll have some funny ER stories to tell all of you.

13…. And to wrap this up? My favorite things- Chocolate! The smell of wild flowers- especially lavender, jasmine and passion flower. Oh I love the smell of Vanilla too. The sound of running water- no not a toilet or from a tap … I mean a water fall or waves hitting the shore silly!
