Our Lucky Home

June 29, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about Five years as a home owner

1…. 5 years ago today we moved into our very first (and only) house.

2…. On this day, in 2001, my husband and I were busy pulling out all of the carpets in the house so that we could sand and refinish all of the beautiful white oak hardwood floors. Did I say that we kept our apartment for an extra month so that we could complete some renovations?

3…. My brother-in-law came up from Chicago to give us a hand and he helped my husband put some ceiling fans up in three rooms. A heat wave had set in and we didn’t have any air-conditioning! The ceiling fans helped a lot.

4…. At some point during that first day I took a sledge hammer and started knocking out one of the walls in our tiny living room. A contractor friend of ours and my husband helped too.

5…. We took down a total of 5 walls between the entry, living room, dining room and stairway hall. Yes, we checked that no walls were structual first. That’s why our friend the contractor was there.

6…. We had met ALL of our neighbors the evening before when we first entered our new home. At least 15 of them. We also learned that the former owners who had lived in the house before us weren’t all that friendly, and that many of the neighbors had never seen the inside of our house. Well, that started an avalanche of people just dropping by over the next month to peek inside trying to find out what we were up to (as if the noise and the big white cloud of dust coming from the windows and open doors wouldn’t tell them!). That gave us a good opportunity to find out just how odd a few of them were. Oh boy, that was just the start.

7…. During that first month Chris and I repaired the ceiling and floors in the living room / dining room where the walls had been, refinished the floors by sanding them and putting 5 coats of polyurethane on them (they’re beautiful!), and painted every room in the house.

8…. I ended up taking a couple more weeks off work to finish some of the renovations and to await the duct work people, whom we needed desperately in order to move the heating ducts in the living room. You see, when I knocked out some walls I knocked out a wall that had a heating duct in it that went up to our master bedroom. That meant no heat for us in the winter! And yes I knew I was knocking it out when I did it, I just didn’t think it would take approximately 6 weeks before we could get a duct work company to come out and do the work for us.

9…. During our month of preparing the house for our move we also had an electrician come in and replace all the old knob and tube wiring. Did I say our house was built in 1927 yet? It’s old but it was in very good shape.

10…. There are only three closets in our house, and only one is a decent size. Think about it. How many closets do you have in your house and aren’t they all full?

11…. By the time we were ready to move into our home at the end of July 2001 I was a mess. I’d been working on our house for 18+ hours a day, during a heatwave with no air-conditioning. I was stressed and over-tired, and I’d lost at least 20 pounds (at least 10 pounds too much). The move went well, but it was a stress I didn’t handle well, and I ended up in tears many times throughout that day.

12…. We were so excited to own our first home. I’d been cooped up in a tiny junior one bedroom apartment for far too long. I was happy to have the extra space and a place to call my own. I was also ecstatic about having a backyard. I was going to plant a lot of veggies in it and even had some started in containers prior to our move. This is ironic because now my “veggie” garden is a major flower garden and the veggies are grown in containers – again. LOL

13…. We just renewed our mortgage for a very good rate, but our original deal was the best! We had a variable rate mortgage at 1.5 % below prime for the first six months, and then 0.5% below prime for the rest of the mortgage term. Which means our for our first 6 months we lucked out because the interest rates were so low. We were only paying 0.5% interest! That’ll never happen again. As a result of our low interest rates and our down payment we’ve already managed to pay off approximately 45% of the cost of our house.

14. A bonus entry – Within less than a year of our move we had both changed jobs and were working at the hospital that is only three blocks from our home. We walk to work. How sweet is that? Especially now that the gas prices are so high? We only fill our car up every two or three weeks! and since we don’t drive it daily we were able to lower our insurance on it since it’s only used for casual driving. Another bonus. Getting this house turned out to be one of the best things that has happened to us.

Oh yeah … we’re still renovating, even after 5 years and all the work we did at the start and through the first year or two. The tin ceiling will be going up in the living room / dining room within the next two weeks. That’s going to look fantastic. Hmmm maybe I should start yet another site? Maybe a renovation one? LOL

It’s been a busy week

Thirteen Things about About this past week

1…. I discovered that an old friend of mine was reading this site and I was thrilled when she decided to contact me. Hi Lisa!

2…. I was also happy that we seem to still be on the same wavelength, and that there are some similarities in what is going on in each of our lives right now.

3…. Lisa contacting me, caused me to get in touch with another friend that I haven’t spoken with for a few months. So it’s been an “old friends” sort of week.

4…. Our new boarder moved in on Saturday, or rather we picked her up from the home that she’d been staying in and helped her move in.

5…. Her former “Homestay Parents” told us she was very demanding and that she was a “princess”. So Chris promptly nicknamed her princess after she’d been here for a few hours.

6…. It turns out that our new boarder is a little demanding but I think we can handle it. She kind of follows me around the house when she comes home from school. However she does offer to help with dinner and sometimes clears the dishes off the table when we’ve finished eating and I do appreciate her doing this occasionally.

7…. The boarder only made me mad on Sunday. We were supposed to be going to Chris sisters when he got off work late Sunday afternoon and we’d told our boarder about our little trip. She said that she would be going out and meeting with friends at a Jazz festival. I asked her if she’d be eating out and she said yes. So great- no one would be home for dinner since we’d all be out. Sunday arrived and she went out to meet some friends in the afternoon but not before informing me that she wanted dinner at 5 pm before she was going to go out with her friends for the evening. Huh? We won’t be home at 5? I ended up making her a dinner and then Chris and I left to go to Waterloo. That will not happen again. So far that’s been the only incident that upset me. Everything else has been pretty good.

8…. Sunday was Chris’ nieces’ first communion. We couldn’t make the ceremony but we showed up at his sisters for the party in the evening.

9…. The party ended up being in and around the hot tub! Unfortunately Chris had forgotten to remind me to bring a bathing suit so I didn’t go in.

10…. Chris did though and he pretty much spent the whole evening soaking in the hot tub. Now he wants us to get one. hmmm where in our tiny backyard shall we put it?

11…. Actually I do have an idea on where we might put a hot tub if we ever got one. We have an enclosed back porch (Florida Room) and it has a very large storage area underneath it. My thoughts are that we should dig down into the cement storage area and sink a hot tub partially under the Florida room. If we dug deep enough we could even put in an entrance to the basement. This would be great in the winter as we could get right into the tub by entering through the basement rather than trudging around the backyard in the snow. I think I like this idea.

12…. The rest of the week has been spent working on my two new sites and moving this one over to it’s brand new domain.

13…. Chris saw the sleep doctor today to get the results of his sleep study. Just as I thought he has sleep apnea. Severe sleep apnea according to the doctor. Now he might need to wear one of those special breath masks when he sleeps, or have some surgery on his throat and sinus’ to see if it helps. We’ll see what happens. Last Thursday I had my appt with the sleep study doctor and found out that I have skipped heart beats when I’m sleeping. So I guess the two of us have some sleep problems after all.

Lifes Simple Pleasures

Thirteen Things about Life’s Simple Pleasures

Cat over at Living with Multiple Personalities tagged me yesterday, so I thought I’d combine her Simple Pleasures Meme with this Thursday 13. I’m not going to tag anyone this time, but if you feel like playing just make a post naming some of life’s simple pleasures that you enjoy most:

Simple Pleasures:

1…. Those first warm spring days and the promise of summer to come.

2…. Walking in the rain on a warm day without a care in the world, just enjoying the feeling, the smell and sound of the rain.

3…. The first snow fall, and the feel of snow flakes as they land on your face and melt.

4…. The brilliant colours of Autumn leaves while they’re still on the trees.

5…. The feel of the sun as it warms my skin on a beautiful day.

6…. The sight of rolling hills, valleys, mountains. I come from an area with astounding natural beauty and I miss those hills and valleys dearly now that I live in such a flat area.

7…. Chocolate, melting slowly, delicious.

8…. Being awake early when all is quiet, watching the sunrise and feeling the first warm rays of the sun.

9…. The sound of laughter, be it from a child or adult. Laughter is infectious and you can’t help but join in.

10…. Rainbows in the sky after a rainstorm. They are always so magical.

11…. Enjoying the sunset, sitting on my porch or in the backyard with my husband. Watching the sky turn purple, then pink, then red.

12…. The look in my husbands eyes every time he sees me.

13…. My husbands warmth. His warm hands and body, so nice when I need warming.

What are your simple pleasures?

Thai Curry Stir Fry

May 25, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about Tonights Dinner

1…. This is such a fantastic dinner I thought I’d give you the recipe.

2…. Start with 1/2 lb boneless skinless chicken breast cut up into small pieces.

3…. Add 1 tbsp Canola oil to a large pan or wok, heat on low until oil is hot and then add the chicken to the pan, stirring occasionally until the meat looks cooked.

4…. Add one can of Thai Green Curry sauce. Most grocery stores seem to carry this these days, just look in the aisle where rice is sold, or where products to make Chinese, Mexican and Indian foods are sold.

5…. The Thai curry sauce is hot, so I often add a half can of Coconut milk to it to tone it down. Works beautifully.

6…. Once the sauce, coconut milk and chicken has simmered on low for 5 minutes I add the rest of the ingredients.

7…. I was lazy this evening. I added two cups of frozen veggies consisting of cauliflower, carrot, broccoli. I also had some pre-chopped frozen peppers and zucchini in the freezer that I added to the mix.

8…. 1 can of sliced water chestnuts

9…. 1 cup snow peas (you know the green pea shells)

10…. Let this mix simmer for another 15 minutes on low heat.

11…. While the above ingredients were cooking I got out another pot and heated water in it. I then added a package of Rice Vermicelli noodles to the water and let the noodles sit in the warm water for 5 minutes to soften up.

12…. When the Thai curry stir fry looks and smells (mmmmm) done (approximately 20 to 25 minutes from the start of cooking) toss in the vermacelli noodles and serve. This curry can also be served over a bed of rice, which is the way we usually have it.

13…. Now I just need someone to feed. It’s almost 8 p.m. and our border hasn’t come home yet. He hasn’t even called to say he would be late. I’m ticked because he does this all the time. I think it’s just rude and disrespectful. Don’t you? My husband won’t be home until after 10 p.m. because he’s working an evening shift. He can, and will, enjoy the meal when he comes home.

Well, maybe my roomie Noi will enjoy this meal with me. She has her own Thursday Thirteen up now too, so go see her!

Things that make me Shake in My Boots

May 18, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things Tricia is afraid of

1…. Thunder! Yes, Thunder, not lightning. Well, yes, I do have a healthy fear of lightning, but why on earth do I want to crawl under the covers and hide my head when it thunders? My brother brought back a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog from Africa, back in the 80’s, and that dog was terrified of storms. I used to hide under the table with him!

2…. I was told that when I was a young child a motorcycle drove by and I went into hysterics over the sound. Perhaps that’s why thunder bothers me.
3…. If I could choose how I might die drowning wouldn’t even make the list. I’m not a strong swimmer, and the thought of sinking and not being able to get back up scares the heck out of me. I do however love canoeing and whitewater rafting. Go figure!
4…. I’m afraid of heights. Even standing on a chair bothers me.
5…. Even with my fear of heights, I find myself up on ladders more often than I’d like to be seeing as our house is in a constant state of renovation! Plus, I used to rock climb. I haven’t done that for years but I bet I still could.
6…. I don’t like bridges very much either. That’s probably a combination of the fear of heights and maybe even the fear of drowning thingy.

7…. Does a bridge make a loud noise when it falls down? If it does then bridges might also be on my thunder list. They do rumble when you are standing on one and a big truck drives on it. Are you following my logic or have I totally lost you?
8…. Fear of falling! Just take a look at what happened to me a month and a half ago to know why I fear falling. Oh my chin and jaw!
9…. Hey I’m a klutz. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, so it’s only natural that I fear personal injury due to my klutziness!
10…. Speaking of being a klutz, and injury, I just burned the top of my right index finger and the bottom of my left middle finger while trying to take a hot pizza off the pan. What can I say, the pan slipped, I grabbed it. Stupid!
11…. Fear of fire. When I was 5 our old farmhouse cottage burned down with my brother inside of it. I remember standing outside with my mother and grandmother calling for my brother for what seemed like hours. Fortunately, unbeknown to us, my uncle had run into the house and rescued my brother shortly after the fire started.
12…. I fear for my husband. A year and a half ago he passed out at work, right at the triage station in Emergency. His ecg was altered, so they thought he had a rare sudden death heart arrhythmia called Brugada Syndrome. He was thoroughly tested, something like what they did on HOUSE last night, and they weren’t able to find any problems. But, his ecg is still altered and he still feels faint and shaky at times and when he does I worry over him. He’s too young to die, we have a lot to do yet.
13…. Pain. I fear pain. I have constant chronic pain in my abdomen and it always gets worse at night, worse if I lie down. So I don’t sleep, and when I don’t sleep I have more pain. Ow.

So Am I a wuss or what? I think most of my fears have a rational basis, but maybe I’m wrong. What do you think? Do you have any fears?

** Update** From some of the comments I think some people think I’m sitting here living in fear. Nope! I’m not. I’m not quaking in fear all day everyday. This list is for fun. Everybody has fears, I’m just opening up and listing a few of mine.

Oh and please check out my Wordless Wednesday post below as well! Thanks!
