Why I love Christmas Time

December 21, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about

why I love Christmas

This is Thursday Thirteen #28

1…. I love how everyone decorates their homes. The lights, the decorations. I wish peoples homes were light up like that year round.

2…. Eggnog! This is the only time of year that I drink eggnog – with rum of course. Which reminds me, I’ve got to buy some eggnog because I haven’t even had my first one yet.

3…. I enjoy reading all the cards that we get at Christmas, but I must admit that I’m terrible about sending them out.

4…. I enjoy getting together with my family. I have one brother and one sister that live in the city or just outside it, but we don’t see each other often. Christmas is a good excuse for all of us to get together.

5…. It’s always a crazy time going to the in-laws. One reason why it’s crazy is that they never know when they are going to hold the dinner. It’s not always Christmas day. Often its a week later. So we have an extended Christmas period with my husbands family.

6…. Pumpkin Pie! I’ve mentioned my love of pumpkin pie before. If I’m going to eat pie pumpkin is my choice! My sister makes a very light pumpkin cheesecake that is to die for. I wonder if I could get her to make it this year?

7…. Snow! We don’t seem to get much snow here in December, or much during the other cool months lately either. Somehow though, it always seems to snow on Christmas eve or Christmas day. It’s almost magical watching the light flakes drift down.

8…. We didn’t decorate this year. I know what a shame eh? We didn’t do it because I just don’t feel well, and also our house continues to be under renovation. I can’t wait until the living room is finished so that when I do decorate it will just look perfect.

9…. I do however enjoy decorating. We put up lights on the outside of the house, and cedar boughs? along the front over the bare window flower boxes.

10…. Then I decorate the enclosed front porch with cedar boughs and I hang little ornaments in them. We also string some lights up inside the porch. I like using just white or just blue lights. I don’t like the multicolored lights.

11…. When I do decorate the inside of our house we have a nice tree- fake because of allergies – that I decorate with lights, beads, ribbons and home made silk ribbon flowers, and ornaments that have been handed down through my family from grandparents to parents to me.

12…. Oh other than TURKEY I really enjoy the rum pudding too! I don’t know if you know what that is. My mom used to make a soft fruit type of cake. She’d steam it just before serving it so it would be soft and moist and then we’d put a nice rum sauce on it. I haven’t had that for years. I’m going to dig out the recipe and perhaps make it this year. It’s very nice.

13…. Notice that I haven’t mentioned presents? I really don’t care about presents at all. I just enjoy the spirit of the season, giving gifts, seeing children smile and enjoy their gifts, and being with the people I love.

Happy Holidays – Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Years!

Whats been happening with Tricia’s Musings lately

Thirteen Things about What’s been happening

This is Thursday Thirteen #27

1…. Some how I’ve managed to be listed over at The bestest Blog of all time as the Bestest blog of the day – Today.

2…. One thing that made him notice my site was that he was visiting Technorati and looking up sites that he links to or that linked to him and he says that my site had the most links out of all of the blogs he lists on his site. Actually I’ve been watching my Technorati rank lately and I’m pleased to say that I’ve reached the rank of 994 on Technorati. That’s amazing!

3…. I just finished doing an interview for Matt Clarke’s blog Mr. Joe’s Blog and to my amazement he published it right away So I’m being featured on two sites today. Coolness.

4…. While I was writing up that blog interview I filled in another one that had been sent to me by Blog TO. That’s a site about all the goings on in Toronto. I don’t know when it will be posted but when it is it will be featured in their Blogerati section.

5…. A few weeks ago I was invited to become a team member over at a blog called 192 Countries. The site owner wanted to get one blogger from 192 Countries to write in his blog and he choose me to write for Canada. I’m all signed up but I’ve yet to create a post over there. I need to make some time later today to do that.

6…. What else has been going on? Oh I’ve been working on Mr Fabs blogs – 4 of them! Remember folks I’m starting to work on peoples blog themes and doing sidebar fixes etc so if you need some help I’d be happy to help you for a small fee.

7…. As I weren’t busy enough I’ve been working on creating three new blogs. One will be my husbands and the other two will be mine. They’re called Celebrity Scoop, The Web Files and Guitar Licks. Guess which one is my husbands?

8…. In the middle of November I stumbled across 451press and I saw that they were going to be accepting new bloggers in a week. I bookmarked the site and went back and applied to write a television related blog. I just found out last week that I was accepted. So add another blog to the list of blogs that I’m writing or write on, this one is called Watching House and it’s about the television show House MD. I’ll be filling it with juicy tidbits about Hugh Laurie for all his fans out there. Come see the new blog.

9…. I’ve been feeling very guilty about not visiting all the Wordless Wednesday, Thursday Thirteen, Photo Scavenger hunt people or my blogging friends lately. I’ve just been so busy and on top of that I’m really not feeling well. I’m sorry. I will get back to all of my regular visits soon. I will.

10…. Nothing much else has been happening in my world. I’ve officially been off work with my Crohns for just over a year. Boooooooo

11…. Chris is working in his new job. I think this is his third week. It’s not quite as busy as being a porter but being a Recovery room attendant has been keeping him busy. The hours are regular and we should start seeing slightly larger paychecks coming in from his work soon. Yahhhh

12…. As usual I’ve been up pretty much of the night. This time though I fell asleep on the couch at about 10:30 just as I was going to start working on Fabs sites. Yep sorry Fab, it seems that whenever I’m working on your sites I get sleepy. I did have a huge headache though so that might have been part of it too.

13…. Nothing else is happening. I’m busy enough I think, I don’t need any other major stuff to be happening.

Grrr forget the Mr Linky I had an apostrophe in “What’s” in the title earlier and when I saved the post and continued editing it would let me set up Mr. Linky because Mr Linky doesn’t like apostrophes or question marks Grrr

13 things about Thanks Giving

November 23, 2006 by Tricia

Thursday Thirteen

13 Things about Thanks Giving

1. Canadians celebrate Thanks Giving in October, while Americans Celebrate Thanks Giving in November. As If my American friends didn’t already know that – Happy Thanks Giving to my American friends.

2. My favorite memories of Thanks Giving were when I was a child and young teenager. We’d go up to our cottage and my brothers and sister who didn’t live at home anymore would come for the weekend, and sometimes Aunts and Uncles who lived elsewhere would visit as well. It was just a nice time because we were all together, having a good time and great meals.

3. My mom used to cook huge Thanks Giving meals when a lot of family was getting together. We often had a Ham and a Turkey, stuffing, jellied cranberries, peas, mashed potatoes, carrots, candied yam, a dish of pickles and olives and of course Thanks Giving wouldn’t be Thanks Giving without Pumpkin Pie – with whipped cream on top of course. Yummm. I bet some of you are having this exact meal today.

4. My parents are gone now so Chris and I, with our odd work schedules often end up having Thanks Giving for two. Occasionally my sister or a friend will join us but often it’s just the two of us.

5. When Thanks Giving is just for Chris and I, I still try to make a traditional Thanks Giving Dinner. I rarely cook a ham but if I do it’s just a small piece of smoked ham that I slather with a honey Dijon mustard marinade. A few times I’ve made a normal sized turkey – freezing more than half of it to use in stir fry or soups later. Oh I always make a soup with some of the turkey left overs the day after a big turkey meal. There’s nothing better than home made turkey soup.

6. Most of the time, especially lately, I just bake a nice Turkey breast for two. They are often big enough that we still have some left over for a sandwich or two, or another meal.

7. I always make some stuffing, candied yam and carrots, peas, cranberry jelly, mashed potatoes and a pumpkin pie. Actually I think for thanks giving it’s the pumpkin pie that I like most. I could do without everything else but a Thanks Giving day meal just wouldn’t be right without that pie for desert.

8. Occasionally when our work schedules allow Chris and I go to the in-laws for Thanks Giving. Now my Mother in law is a nice enough lady, but a cook she most definitely is not. I think I’ve finally got her to stop making salmonella turkey. You know what that is? It’s when you put a Turkey in the oven the night before at about 10 or 11 pm, set the stove at 200 F and slow cook your turkey for about 12 hours. That just creates a huge breeding ground for salmonella. No thanks!

9. Twice that I’m aware, of when my in-laws used to have a pet cat, the cat managed to destroy a Thanks Giving or Christmas Turkey. One time the cat got at the turkey before it was cooked and the second time the cat attacked the turkey when it was resting on the kitchen counter after it was cooked. My mother in law walked into the kitchen to find the whole cats head deep inside the turkey carcass. Yuck!

10. My MIL always makes mixed vegetables. I believe she does this for every meal she cooks. She puts them in a big pot and boils them for about two hours. Uh huh – tasteless mush unfortunately. Ooh yes- mashed turnip and parsnip (together) make regular appearances as well.

11. The gravy she makes is even better than the veggies. She uses the boiled mixed veggies water and mixes it with an onion gravy mix to make the gravy. Even though she has real turkey drippings she can use to make excellent gravy she makes this watery onion fake gravy. Bleahhhhh.

12. Thanks Giving at the in-laws is usually a crazy event too because no one ever knows when the dinner is – what time, or even what day. The father in law will call and say that Thanks Giving dinner is going to be on the Saturday because that’s the best day to get together, and then Mother in Law will call and say it’s on Sunday or the holiday Monday for similar reasons. We usually don’t know when it really is until a few hours before the event. LOL and this family likes to think it’s spontaneous. I think they are just really disorganized. Oh well, the day is always saved with some pumpkin pie for desert. It’s a must- even in Chris’ family.

13. Does anyone remember watching WKRP in Cincinnati? It was a television show in the 70’s – quite a popular one at that. One of it’s most famous episodes involved the owner of the radio station and his idea to promote the station on Thanks Giving. He came up with the idea of dropping turkeys to an awaiting crowd from a helicopter. The episode was hilarious!

Here I leave you with a condensed 5 minute version of the funniest WKRP in Cincinnati episode:

“THE TURKEY DROP”

You guys search for strange stuff

13 things about Strange Search Terms on Feverishthoughts.com

1. The number one search term- every day! is a variation of males wearing female bathing suits. This is thanks to a post I wrote about an ex-boyfriend trying on my clothes and bathing suits when I wasn’t home.

2. In the second highest position – Hugh Laurie – I’ve written two posts about him (That’s HOUSE) with funny videos from his younger days and since then he’s become a regular search term on this site.

3. I guess that I’m not the only one that does weird or klutzy things since someone was searching for
weirdest things done and it brought them here.

4.Same for having pulled a muscle tongue – that’s something I’m proud of doing but it happened!

5. Perhaps a lot of people are lucky and don’t have the smallest bathroom in the world, but I do and that’s bringing people over here too.

I guess sometimes peoples searches actually bring them here for a worthwhile reason and they actually find posts that might help answer their questions:

6. how much for receive roaming text mine is expensive, how much do roaming charges cost you?

7. feverishthoughts.com – why not type it in the address bar instead of a search engine?

8. shoulder mri contrast blog – I don’t think they do MRI’s on blog’s shoulders but I’ll look into that for you.

9 having enteroclysis – yep been there, done that- not fun, but not all that bad either really.

10. how check a weak cable signal – call the cable guy!

11. Love gritting – Uh I have no idea what this is, but if it’s gritting or grating it ain’t love.

12. my rats wobbling ??? I have no idea how that term brought someone to this site.

13. choosing renters and strange noises in the house Renters and strange noise really do go together, I’ve lived through it; as do these- thong leotard pictures and guys turned into ladies. No comment necessary on that one!

And a bonus – what grows in the garden with neglect – now that’s an easy one to answer – WEEDS! LOL

Words I dislike and one surprising find

November 2, 2006 by Tricia

Thursday Thirteen

13 words I hate:

1. Well, the first word is going to be HATE because I think it’s over used. I feel that Hate is a very strong emotion and people say they “hate this” and “hate that” and what they really mean is that they “don’t like” or “dislike” something.

2. The word Woilla – over used on designing shows, by pseudo starlets and pretty much everyone lately. The word is Voila people as in Vvvvvv wa LA.

3. Sorry – another over used word in my opinion. My husband over uses the word. He’s sorry for everything all the time. Why? drop a piece of paper- sorry, sneeze loudly – sorry. Why? Mix it up. Say excuse me or maybe sometimes don’t say anything at all because, maybe, just maybe, there is nothing to be sorry for.

4. Ok – “How are you today?” – OK, “how was your day?” – ok, “Was the movie a good one?” It was Ok. Anyone with a teenager probably knows how frustrating it is to hear this word 100 times each day, but when adults can barely hold a conversation and repeatedly answer with the word Ok it drives me nuts. I think that it’s been said that the average adult has 700 or so words that they use regularly in their vocabulary. Use them.

5. eh? Canadians do not go around saying EH all the time. Honest! Seeing as I’m in Canada and know many Canadians you can believe me when I say that no one I know says eh more than once every two or three weeks- if that.

6. We also don’t say aboot either. No matter what you think you heard when you spoke with a Canadian, we are saying “about” (AhhhhBout).
