I’ve got a camera in my tummy and I don’t know what to do with it

January 25, 2007 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about the camera in my tummy

This is Thursday Thirteen #32

1…. Early yesterday morning I swallowed a camera

2…. It’s true. I went to the hospital to do it.

3…. The medical test that I’m currently undergoing is called a Camera Endoscopy.

4…. The Camera takes 5 or 6 photos of my intestinal tract every second as it travels through my system.

5…. I’m doing this test so that the doctors can have a good look at my Crohn’s disease since they can’t see it at all when they do a normal gastroscopy or colonoscopy. It’s always been assumed that it’s deep in my small bowel. This is the only way to see the inside of the small bowel without having extensive surgery.

6…. So, yesterday morning I went to the hospital and got fitted with a halter that would hold the machine that would record what the camera was seeing (a hard drive?), and the very heavy battery pack. it felt like what I think a parachute halter would feel like.

7…. Then the really nice nurses in the endoscopy department started putting all the electrodes on my chest and abdomen in order to record exactly where the pill was in my body as it took the photos being stored on the hard drive.

8…. I had been told that the clinic did camera pill tests every Wednesday. It sounded like they did them every Wednesday, but considering that it took three nurses to figure out exactly where to place the electrodes and to fit me with the halter I don’t think they do the camera pill test all that often at all.

9…. Once I had the electrodes and the halter on they pulled out the pill that I had to swallow. It was / is about the size of a very large calcium pill (bigger). Look at your baby finger – ok the size of the pill is from the tip of your baby finger to the first knuckle, and the width is about the width of your ring finger. In other words it’s not a small pill.

10….The camera, before I swallowed it, flashed with a bright light several times each second. I joked with the nurses by asking them if I’d be able to stand in the dark and see it flashing inside me as it moved through my system? I did actually test my theory but I’m sorry to report that I didn’t have a funny abdominal light show going on, on the outside, but I know there’s still one going on, on the inside.

11…. I was home again by 8 am, but since I didn’t sleep well last night I fell asleep on the couch from 10 am until 1:30 pm Starving the whole time because I wasn’t allowed to eat until 11:30 am but of course I slept though that time. Before I fell asleep I had fantasies about eating, I was so hungry!

12…. I had to go back to the hospital for 3 pm to give them back the halter and pay for the test. $1100 for this little experiment folks and it’s not covered by our Ontario Health plan or by our Insurance company. We put it on Visa, and I have no idea how we’ll pay it off. I just hope that the pill reached the end of my small bowel before the data collection stopped, or else they might not have gotten as much info as they need to really help me.

13…. The test is so expensive because the pill is only used once. If you read one of my posts from yesterday I was worried that I might be swallowing a pill that someone else had pooped out the week before, but that’s not the case. Relief! Now I just have to wait for this darn thing to pass out of my body.

I didn’t feel well all day. I don’t think it’s because of the pill but I had major fevers all day and still have a fever as I write this. I also haven’t gone to the washroom since before I took the pill so I’m hoping that it didn’t get stuck anywhere. The camera pill is the exact same diameter as the small bowel and if I have narrowing it’s possible that it could get stuck. Let’s hope it didn’t.

Things that make me mad

January 18, 2007 by Tricia

Thirteen Things that Make me Mad

1…. People who tell me what I can or can’t write …

2…. In the past week I’ve been told no less than three times that something I’ve written or posted shouldn’t be posted. Most of these things have happened on my Gardening blog of all places.

3…. One person told me why I shouldn’t do any posts for Loudlaunch, and gave me a long description of his problem with them.

4…. Another person blasted me on As the Garden Grows for saying that Toronto’s been warmer than normal in the last two months. Going so far as to tell me how wrong I was and calling me a stupid idiot. Right. I’ll take your words to heart and change my ways especially since you’ve gone so far as to insult my intelligence. Yeah sure.

5…. Then yesterday I was told that the snowman photo that I posted on my gardening blog might be offensive to some people.

6…. I didn’t really think of that photo as being offensive when I posted it. If anything I thought perhaps people might take more offense at the Wordless Wednesday Photo that I posted on this site because it deals with obesity and anorexia.

7…. People that have been reading my sites for a while, and people that actually know me – know that I go out of my way trying not to offend people or hurt others feelings. I do that because it’s my own feelings that often end up getting hurt far more often than most others. Plus, If I really tried to not write anything that would offend anyone I’d have to stop writing and posting pictures completely because just about everything has the possibility of offending someone somewhere.

8…. Bad drivers – people who change lanes or turn without signaling, cut you off, can’t park … you name it, bad drivers make me mad.

9…. People who park in front of my driveway – blocking it. It’s bad enough when it’s my elderly neighbors kids. At least they’re only there for 30 minutes or so and I know where to go to ask them to move, but when it’s strangers? Idiots!

10…. Packages that I can’t open. Have you ever bought something – maybe something small like a package of batteries or an accessory for your cell phone and you notice that the package is three times the size of what’s inside and coated in plastic that you can’t tear with your bare hands? You have to go and find your scissors in order to open it and sometimes the plastic is so thick that even your scissors have trouble cutting it open? Yeah, it’s those kinds of packages that make me mad.

11…. My neighbors and their loud Karaoke. Yes they are still at it and the singing hasn’t improved. Gag me!

12…. Websites with autoplay videos or music. Especially if I can’t find how to turn it off easily. Nothing like visiting a site and getting blasted with music.

13…. As I pointed out in yesterdays Wordless Wednesday I’m not using Mr. Linky anymore because people who take the time to visit my site and leave a link could also take the time to leave a short comment. Leaving a link and running off to the next site is rude.

13 Great sites to visit

January 11, 2007 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about Great Sites I’ve Visited Recently
I’ve come across some great sites recently and I thought I’d take a moment and give you a short description each site.

1…. Jessie from Hunna’s Happenings has the most adorable photo of her niece up for yesterdays WW. I enjoy reading all of her posts. She writes in an easy friendly style that makes you want to just keep on reading. Jessie also started the Postie Carnival that’s open to all members of Pay/perp0st. Carnivals are a great way of getting new visitors to your site, and finding new sites to enjoy.

2…. I think that Chris from the Thermal blog might be becoming a regular reader on some of our sites, and as a result I’ve been checking out his site too. Chris’ site is fantastic. He’s got a mix of helpful advise, pointing his readers to sites that will help them with their own sites, fantastic photos, and some amusing posts. He balances out his posts really well -a few helpful posts followed by something light hearted. Good work Chris. Oh and before I forget it looks like Chris started another blog about a month ago and it’s called Blog-Op – tons of great website and internet related info on that site. Check them out.

3…. SubDlerium is a site about the day to day life of a student, still living at home with the parental units. This site is pretty new having just started in December. It will be interesting to see how it develops over the next few months.

4…. Lisa, from My Thoughts, Ideas and Ramblings is, I believe, a stay at home mom. She talks about family life on her blog, and spreads some love here and there through out her community of blogging friends. I like her writing style, and I enjoy her posts on the pay/perp0st forums too. She has some good one liners from time to time.

5…. A links blog is a great site. Just as it’s title says it’s a blog that will not only list your link in the side bar, but will make a short post about your blog. Right now they are asking people to write about the site in the hopes that more people will come along and list their sites. Sounds like a good deal to me! Check it out.

6…. Oseas Adelso is described by Oseas as “Just a simple, multi-media blog where I’ll show significant (and insignificant) events of my somewhat average life.” He’s a University student that I’ve met through my work with Pay/perp0st and he seems to be a very nice guy. He’s got a post on his site about the new iPhone that’s really cool.

7…. Arts a fellow Canadian and he named his site “We were the cool kids” I really enjoy his writing style – It’s a little sarcastic, but humorous at the same time no matter what he’s talking about. Poor guy hurt his eye when his glasses broke.

8…. Jeremy from Haunted House Dressings Just had a horror story published over at Chiaroscuro. It’s really good! Go read his scary story and then visit his site and let him know what you thought of it.

9…. Osman tagged me to write up my five favorite movies a few days ago. I hate to admit this but I don’t watch many movies. I can partially blame my husband for this because he just hates going to movie theaters, however he can’t take all the blame. We do have a vcr, a dvd player and all the movie channels in our full cable package. LOL Ok so I just don’t watch movies! So how about we call this movies I’ve enjoyed over the years? Jaws, Pirates of the Caribbean (I still haven’t seen the new one!), The Shinning, Matrix and Falling Down (older Michael Douglas Movie). Osman, who tagged me for the five favorite movie meme has a nice little site himself. He’s a University student living at home and also trying to make a bit of extra money on pay/perp0st. That’s where I met a number of the bloggers I’m highlighting today. You should go and see his Wordless Wednesday post – what a beautiful photo.

10…. Another site that I’ve been enjoying is The BenSpark I go there to see what the photo of the day is, and to catch up what’s happening in his life. He’s another blogger who’s style of writing I enjoy. Oh, and I like his photo a day so much that I’ve even put a banner highlighting his photo of the day in my left sidebar. Do you see it?

11…. I think that’s more than 13 sites now! Hopefully I didn’t miss anyone that I said I’d spread some bloggy love to. Please dear visitors, if you’ve read this far visit a few of the sites I’ve listed. You’ll like them. I know you will.

12…. I’m still feeling like cr*p. Remind me to start to go to bed on time? My messed up sleep cycle is really making me even sicker. I’m thinking of finding some way to just knock myself out for two or three days in a row. Maybe that will reset my body and kill the pain that I’m in.

13…. Finally finished! I am going to bed now! Goodnight, good day, and happy Thursday to you.

Exhausted ramblings

Thirteen Things I’M RAMBLING ABOUT …

This is Thursday Thirteen Episode #29

1…. You know somethings wrong when you sick at home and you feel … overworked. I’ve been working so hard on my websites – getting them started, making sure there’s new posts everyday, and then trying to find ways to make money on them that that’s all I seem to do from the time I get up, until the time I tiredly stagger to bed.

2…. I think there’s only an hour or two each day that I do not have a computer in front of me – whether I’m sitting in front of my desktop, or sitting on the couch with my laptop on my lap.

3…. I don’t even have time to visit my blogging friends websites anymore. That’s how busy I am. There has to be a better way.

4…. The reason why I’m working so hard on my sites is of course because I’m sick and therefore I have no work income coming in. So I need to work at finding ways to make money through my websites. It seems to be a vicious cycle though.

5…. If anyone has any magic tips on how I can make money at home and not kill myself by working every waking moment I’d love to hear it.

6…. Christmas- we drove to Brantford to visit with Chris’ parents, his aunt, and his oldest sister, her husband and their son. It was a nice little gathering. Only disappointment was that we didn’t have turkey. Boo hoo. We had boneless chicken breasts in some kind of bland sauce.

7…. I think I’ve mentioned before that my mother in law is not the best cook in the world. She made mashed potatoes but I don’t think she puts any milk or butter/ margarine in them so they were lumpy and dry. The other veggies were mushy brussel sprouts, mashed turnip, and over boiled carrots. The stuffing was ok, but it almost tasted sweet – I’m wondering if she put sugar in it? Either way I’d say it had the most taste! LOL

8…. the meal was saved by the desert. No it wasn’t my favorite for this time of year, which is pumpkin pie – it was Lemon Meringue and or Chocolate truffle cake. She served ice cream on the side. A choice of butterscotch or rolo chocolate. I didn’t have any ice cream but I had a small slice each of the pie and the cake.

9…. We still haven’t had any snow! I think we might get some on the weekend but I don’t have my hopes up. I bet if we do it will end up being a major storm right when we have to travel back and forth between Toronto and Brantford.

10…. Chris brought two of his guitars to Brantford with us on Monday when we went there for Christmas. His nephew plays guitar and Chris decided that it might be nice to give him a lesson. So he brought his Larrivee and his Gibson Ardy Artist. His nephew was thrilled and Chris gave him lessons for at least two full hours. His nephew impressed him enough with his talent that Chris actually let him play the Larrivee – which is unusual because he normally doesn’t let anyone touch his prized guitar, and even more surprising he actually lent his 1979 Gibson to his nephew so he could practice with it until this coming weekend. Chris doesn’t normally lend out his guitars either, particularly not to teenagers, and the Gibsons’ worth a few thousand dollars. His nephew is a really good kid though and I think Chris’ guitar is in good hands. Maybe we’re in the process of creating a Rock Star?

11…. Chris’ brother is coming up from Chicago – maybe sometime today. He hates flying so he does the long drive every time. The drive is about 10 hours. His brother goes totally into party mode once he gets here so it should be a fun time. At least I’ll get some time away from the computers when he’s visiting or when we go to Brantford to see the family.

12…. Then next week, Chris niece is coming from Chicago and I think she’s going to stay with us for a few days. She’s a University student and she still has some time off before she has to go back to school. So I guess we’ll be busy next week visiting with her and probably taking her out around Toronto.

13…. And now it’s time to end my rambling and go to bed. It’s just after 4 a.m. and I think it’s time to call it a day! Sorry this 13 wasn’t that upbeat!
