Beautiful Chicago building

This weeks theme is Metal

In August of 2007 my husband and I drove to Chicago for a weekend visit with my brother-in-law. Given how long it takes to get to Chicago from Toronto we really only had one full day to see some of the great Chicago sites. I’d never been there before and I wanted to see as much as I could.

As we strolled downtown I noticed the Carson Pirie Scott department store.

The store had the most beautiful ornate metal filigree that I think I’ve ever seen on a building. It was just a gorgeous site to see.

Unfortunately the store was slated to close. I do hope that the city of Chicago managed to preserve this beautiful building.

I really enjoyed my visit to Chicago. I found that it’s quite a lot like Toronto and I hope to visit the great city again sometime soon, perhaps this summer. Of course if we drive that distance back and forth again I think we’ll either have to rent a vehicle or get a new car. I’m not sure ours will make that trip one more time! Oh that reminds me … I’ve to look up some rates for auto insurance online as I think it’s time to find better rates.

Grey squirrel enjoying a day in the park

This weeks theme is I Spy

trees at beach

I spied this grey squirrel enjoying a nice day in the park in the Toronto Beaches area and had to take it’s picture as it foraged among the trees.

I actually took this photo in January 2006. Yes, it was winter time and we’d gone to the beach because it was such a nice warm winter day. Now, warm here in the winter time means that it was perhaps 10 Celsius which really isn’t very warm at all, but when you’ve been experiencing weeks of below freezing weather just about anything above zero is warm!

We expect today to be another nice winter day and I think that later in the afternoon we might take our Labrador retriever puppy to the beach for the first time. I’d love to see her have some fun in the water, but I think the water will be far too cold so she’ll have to settle for running on the beach. I think she’ll be happy with that.

Hopefully I’ll get some great photos!

A few years ago when Chris and I were traveling back and forth from Toronto to Ottawa we stopped several times to take photos of the beautiful scenery. It was the middle of July and the fields were full of wild flowers and wild grasses and the air just smelled heavenly.

I love these old wooden fences. If I ever were to purchase a property in the country I think I’d try to build a fence that looked a bit like this. Obviously it wouldn’t have much purpose, but I’d enjoy the look of it. I’d plant wild flowers, heather and perhaps lavender around the fence.

Do you enjoy the look of old fences and maybe even old barns?

Give the dog a bone

This weeks theme is Heavy

I should have looked at what the Photo Hunter theme was before I posted that last photo!

We bought our puppy a large beef bone (roasted bone?) about two weeks ago.

We were desperately looking for something that would be safe for her to chew that wouldn’t end up breaking into little pieces quickly. Labs are real chewers and I guess they must have strong jaws and teeth as it seems they can go through just about anything very quickly! The only toys were buy her these days are nylabone – a tough plastic – or ones that are made of very thick heavy rubber.

She loved the bone! You can see here that it’s more than half the length of her body!

IMG_3166

I’m not sure how heavy it is (or was) but I’d guess that it was at least 8 lb when we purchased it. There isn’t much missing yet so it’s probably still close to that weight. Our puppy’s last vet visit was at the beginning of January and she’d only just reached 20 lb at that time. I doubt she’s even 30 lb now, so the bone is probably close to a third of her weight. It’s heavy!

She tries to pick it up every once in a while, but she doesn’t get too far! Mostly she just drags it around when she wants to move it. She has however managed to pick it up a few times and get on the couch with it. That’s a wasted effort though as we don’t want her chewing a bone on the couch.

It sure keeps her occupied! Before we got her the bone she was quite the attention hog, but now she’ll noisily chew on her bone for hours at a time. If it weren’t for the grinding grating noise (especially when she’s got the bone on the floor instead of on her doggy bed) it would be almost peaceful around here.

Yonge Street

This weeks theme is Narrow

IMG_0246

I took this photo last year just as a street festival was winding down in downtown Toronto. That’s why there’s people standing around and walking on this normally very busy street.

I love how you can see the rows of stores and office buildings far off in the distance and how the street gradually narrows.

Did you know that Yonge Street is the longest street in the world? It begins near the Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto, Ontario and goes right through the city and then through Ontario to the border of Manitoba as highway 11. It’s over 1,896 kilometres (1 178.12 miles) long!
