The Toad Lily and it’s freckled petals

If you thought Lilies only bloomed in the spring or early summer I have one for you that blooms during Autumn. It’s called the Toad Lily:

These little beauties are just starting to form buds and only a few have begun to bloom. However in a week or so they will all be in bloom and what a pretty sight that will be! I love the Toad Lilies freckled petals. They are so tiny and delicate.

I must admit that the plant isn’t much to look at as it grows through the summer, but once it begins to bloom it becomes one of the stars of my Fall garden.

Do any of you grow any of the Toad Lily species?

Flight of the Bumble Bee

This isn’t my best shot, but given that there are so many bees buzzing around my garden these days that showing you one of the creatures in flight is very fitting!

I caught this Bumble Bee taking flight after collecting pollen from one of my flower … the Balloon flowers I do believe, however it could have been any one of my flowers as the bees seem to love just about all of them.

Do you ever try to take pictures of the bees, butterflies or other insects that visit your yard?

I can’t help it … when I take a macro photo of a roses petals that looks like this I think of it as Rose P0rn. Honestly, it’s pictures like this one that get me through our long cold Canadian winters.

This rose is called “Breath of Life” and it’s a climbing Hybrid Tea. I think it’s one of my prettiest roses, at least when I have camera in hand as I don’t think I’ve ever taken a bad picture of this rose.

I’ll look forward to looking at this picture in January or February when it’s below zero, snowing and the wind is howling outside the house. It will make me think if summer and remind me that warm days will soon return.

Striped flowers

Most of the flowers in my garden are solid colors or have petals that subtly go from one shade to another, but I only have a few flowers that have stripes.

One of the striped flowers is new to my garden this year. It’s a petunia. I purchased my annuals in the middle of June and when I saw this particular Petunia I thought it might look great in a planter by my front steps, and in planters in my backyard.

red and white petunia

Of course I had a Canada Day (July 1st) display in mind when I purchased this petunia. The Canadian flag colors are red and white just like this flower so I called this my Canada Day flower.

The other striped flower that I grow is in my backyard. It’s a striped Malva Zebrina.

This beauty reseeds itself each year and I find myself pulling out seedlings that are growing in the wrong areas each spring and early summer. It’s a pretty flower and it’s easy to grow and manage.

Do you grow any striped or unusual looking flowers in your garden?

All of the asters that I planted in my garden beds in June are blooming their little heads off now. I believe the Asters are pom pom asters … whether they are or not, they sure do look like Pom poms don’t they?

These bright and cheery flowers should bloom in my garden until late September or even well into October if the weather holds out.
