Yet another Rose

Yves Piaget

This rose is the lovely Yves Piaget, from the Romantica Rose Series.

It has a light yet heavenly scent, full multi-petaled blooms and a dusty rose color. The blooms last approximately 5 to 7 days.

I was just thinking that with about 60 different rose plants I could put a photo up on all my site each day for a whole year or more with all the photographs that I’ve taken of them over the last few years. Hmmm well it’s an idea anyway. LOL

Graham Thomas English Rose

a cluster of graham thomas

Yes, some of our roses are still blooming. They shouldn’t be but they most definitely are blooming. They do not look as lovely as these Graham Thomas English Roses do in this photo though. This photo was taken sometime this past summer. Probably in July.

I still haven’t managed to winterize my garden this year. I’m starting to think that I might not get it done. If I don’t cover up some of the plants it will be very interesting to find out how they do over our freezing cold winters.

Have any of you in cold areas been as slow as I am to take care of your yard before winter hits?

Lavender Dream

Yet another rose that I grow in my garden:

lavenderdream2

This is a beautiful small rose bush called Lavender Dream that I grow in my front flower bed. If I remember correctly it’s a floribunda.

The flowers are only about 1.5 inches in diameter and they bloom in clusters. So when the small bush is blooming it’s just covered in flowers. It blooms three or four times each season. Right now, since it’s cool outside it doesn’t have any blooms but it’s covered in rose hips.

Remarkably some of my roses are still blooming – Breath of Life, Scent-Sation, Just Joey, Fragrant Cloud, Graham Thomas, Sunsprite, Moulinex and on and on. Why they are blooming- I don’t know. Many of them have very few leaves left, while others still have most of their leaves.

Roses are strange beings.

Don’t forget to visit As the Garden Grows, there’s a new Green Thumb Sunday post there too!

The Doctor is in and he is healthy

Dr. JH Nicolas Climbing Rose:

gorgeous Dr JH Nicholas

I thought that since I’ve been on a bit of a doctor and nurse kick this week I might as well introduce you to the only rose I own with the title of doctor. LOL

Dr. JH Nicolas and I had a very tenuous beginning. I planted him in my front flower bed the first year that I got him, but he didn’t grow much. The front flower bed tends to be drier than the other garden beds because of the roof over hang above it. This bed is also on the North side of the house so the light is not as bright either. At any rate, Dr. JH Nicolas wasn’t growing and with it being I climbing rose I knew something was not right.

The following spring the doctor was not looking good. Most of my other roses had leave buds or even leaves by sometime that April. When the doctor still didn’t have leaf buds by May I thought it was a goner. One of the branches near the base had some green on it though so I decided to dig it up and place it in the back garden. I admit I didn’t think it would live and I planted it almost behind another rose.

Well the little guy thrived in it’s new home. This year, it’s second year in it’s new garden bed it grew to 7 or so feet tall and bloomed a good portion of the season. It might even still have some blooms right now.

So I guess the moral of my story is Don’t give up on your Doctor. Ban am bam

Stella d’Ora Daylily

stelladora1

I know this is a very common daylily but it’s still one of my favorites. It blooms like crazy all summer long, doesn’t mind being in a slightly shadey spot, and it doesn’t take over the whole garden either. Although if my clumps wanted to spread out a bit more than they have I wouldn’t complain.

Most daylilies only bloom once or twice per season. There are few that bloom regularly throughout the summer months, nor many that tolerate partial shade to bright sun which makes it an easy garden plant; and for this reason I would recommend the Stella d’Ora daylily for beginners or gardeners who want lots of blooms but don’t want to fuss over their plants.
