Chilly January Beach

no swimming

You know, when I started Green Thumb Sunday, oh so many months ago, I really thought that when the winter months rolled around I’d perhaps have photos of snow covered pine or cedar branches and trees, frosted, ice covered dead flowers that perhaps looked interesting, icicles, or my snow covered garden in winter.

But no … I can’t do that. It’s barely snowed at all this year. We’ve had a few very light dusting’s of snow, often in the middle of the night that’s already been melting away by dawn. No shoveling. No icing roads. Nothing of the sort.

So I’m afraid that I can’t display frosty winter garden scenes. Not today. Not yet anyway. If this keeps up I’ll be digging out old photos of winter nature scenes that might be suitable for Green Thumb Sunday Winter editions.

The photo that I decided to show you today was taken last January. It was a nice winter day. Perhaps it was only -5 Celsius (23 F). Most winters that would be a fairly nice January day. Perhaps it was even 0 C (32 F).

Either way it felt warm enough and it was a bright sunny day, so Chris and I went to the beach. Something we tend to do more often in the winter months than we usually do in the summer. Yes, we’re weird that way.

On the beach you can see more snow than we’ve had so far this Winter. I love the No Swimming sign. As if! Do you know how cold Lake Ontario would be in the winter? Brrrr

Sweet sweet Tiffany

I adore this rose. It’s a hybrid tea and it’s called Tiffany.

Unfortunately Tiffany is a Little pretentious because she’s not growing as nicely as I’d like her too (perhaps if I pulled out the daisies that end up blocking some of her sun she might change her mind) and as a result she doesn’t bloom as often as she should either. But, Oh my … when she blooms? Look at that gorgeous, gorgeous rose!

With this rose I thank you for the great year we’ve had together. I started blogging this year and I’ve met so many great people. It’s just been wonderful. Thank you! I’m looking forward to many more good years ahead and hopefully keeping in touch with my new blogging friends, as well as perhaps even being lucky enough to met a few of you in the New Year.

May you all have a Happy New Year. Stay safe!

BTW – have a peek at Parking Lot Revenge. I posted it earlier today. I hope that none of you have been as bad while driving around the parking lot this week while you’ve been out catching all the end of the year sales! The link opens in a new tab.

Just like the rose I featured on the As the Garden Grows, this too is one of my favorite roses. It’s name is Valencia and it’s full, huge, multi-petaled and just lovely to look at. As you can see it also photographs very nicely as well.

Look at the bloom. Don’t you feel like you could just dive into this heavenly rose blossom?

Cold weather blooms

amaryllis

I think that some time in the New Year my kitchen table will start to look like this again.

I’ve got Amaryllis beginning to grow new shoots and preparing to bloom in January or February, the orchid looks like it might put out some blooms again around that time too, and the prayer plant (the leafy green one in the background) is ready too. All are enjoying the sunny space in front of my kitchen window.

Bumble Bee and Aster

I love this photo.

Back in September the bumble bees were just loving the Asters, the Sedum blooms, and my raspberries. I had a lot of great opportunities to capture the large flying bumbling insects as they visited my flowers.

This photo is one of a happy bumble bee visiting my New York Asters.

New York Asters are perennial asters. The plant grows to about three feet tall and at least two feet in diam. and from mid August into early September hundreds and hundreds of buds begin to form. When they do bloom the plant is covered in lovely delicate looking pale mauve flowers. I only wish they were scented.
