Start sending real letters again

July 12, 2007 by Tricia

theesnail.gif Isn’t it nice when you receive cards at Christmas time, your birthday or special holidays? Some people even take the time to write a family letter during the holiday season, updating the rest of the family about all the major events that have occurred over the last year.

What’s unfortunate about this is that the occasions that I’ve listed above are about the only times that Chris or I ever receive cards or letters anymore.

My parents were winter Texans and while I missed them while they were away I always appreciated and looked forward to the weekly letters my mother would write. Sure, they had a set routine so each letter had a similar theme, but there was always some little story that made each letter unique.

I miss those letters.

I’m assuming that you don’t get as many letters as you used to either. Do you miss getting letters?

Well, if you want to give someone the feeling of getting a real letter again, but like the convenience of using your computer you could use the free service provided by http://www.esnailer.com. Just type out a letter, fill out the name and address of the person you are sending the letter to and then submit your finished letter to Esnailer.com.

Esnailer will print out your letter, place it in an envelope, put a stamp on it and mail it off to your friend or relative for you. All free of charge.

Sure, you might be saying to yourself “well I could do that myself”, but honestly, when was the last time that you did?

At least with Esnailer half the work is done by them and it’s free. Have you taken a look at the price of stamps these days? Believe me, this is a bargain!

Give it a try.

Too much email!

July 11, 2007 by Tricia

You know what I’ve been doing over the last two days? Trying to catch up on all my email. I get so much email coming in it’s ridiculous!

I run a few mailing lists so I get mail from the lists. Most of the time I don’t have to do anything for those emails other than read them and watch the lists for arguments or really bad advice.

I also get a lot of spam! Tons and tons of it each day.

Then there’s mail from forums I participate in, and affiliate companies discussing the latest deals or offers that I should place on my site.

Buried in all of the above are requests for the blogrolls that I run and advertising requests from private companies, email from family and friends, as well as comments from those who visit any one of our many sites.

The last four types of email are what I consider most important, however they easily get buried in the on slot of other email that I have coming in. I do filter my email to separate folders depending on what the topic of the email is, but I still have to go through all of it at some point.

I get over 1000 emails a day! At least half of that is spam but I still have to go through the spam because real mail gets caught in the spam filter all the time.

Between maintaining our sites, the lists and the blogrolls I’m almost ready to hire someone to go through my email and only give me the stuff I need to respond to!

So if you’ve written to me and there’s a delayed response don’t worry I almost always respond if you are asking a question, it just takes a while sometimes!

Esnailer lets you send real letters to people

June 26, 2007 by Tricia

More than likely some of you reading this are too young to remember the days before the internet and email came into our lives, but for those of us who had to find other ways to communicate with friends and loved ones before email became so popular letters and phone calls were the main modes of communicating with others who lived far away.

It is nice when you receive a letter in the mail, or a card from someone that’s just writing to say hello, isn’t it?

I think getting a letter or card from someone these days is much more special now than it was 15 or 20 years ago. Do you feel that way too?

If you want to send formal correspondence to your friends and loved ones, but perhaps don’t have quite as much time as you’d like to do this, ESnailer.com has come up with a great way of sending real letters to people.

Just go to the ESnailer.com website and start writing a letter to a friend or loved one. EnSnailer will print your letter, tuck it in an envelope and place a stamp on it and send it off to the recipient via regular US postal mail free of charge.

So it’s just like sending an email but the person that you’ve written to will have the thrill of receiving an actual letter.

She’s venomous but you’ll love her

June 20, 2007 by Tricia

How do you know when you’ve chosen a great avatar for your blog? Well, how about when someone tells you that they like your avatar so much that they’d like to get their hair cut like it? LOL

Yep, that would be Venomous Kate. If you haven’t been to Kate’s blog yet what are you waiting for? I just love her writing style.

All of her posts are well written and once you visit her site you can’t read just one post. Before you realize it you’ll find that you’ve read several and laughed or giggled at some line or another in each post.

She’s an amusing, sarcastic, straight forward tell it like it is kind of girl. You’ll love electric venom and I’m sure you’ll love her other blog I think Therefore I blog too.

Oh and if you want to really impress her, bring her a Martini when you drop by as I think that might be one of her favorite drinks.

Quick Blogging – Just Do It!

June 18, 2007 by Tricia

John who is affectionately known as Techie in some circles, of the Something for Nothing Blog, came up with a great idea the other day.

He coined a term for a method of blogging that you might already practice at times, or that you might wish you could do more often. He’s called it Quick Blogging, amd I must say, I’m jumping on the Quick Blogging Revolution band wagon.

I think to some degree I already practice Quick Blogging. It’s basically blogging something as soon as you think of it rather than holding on to it and thinking about it.

I’m going to call my post Stephen King on the Hour and Surnames in China my first official quick blogging post, but I’m sure I’ve practiced this form of blogging in the past. Perhaps even as often as once a week. Now I think I’m going to try to make a quick blogging entry at least once a day from now on. Why not.

Basically all you need to do for quick blogging is blog whatever you are thinking about when it comes to you.

Take my Stephen King and China Surnames post. I was watching a television show, enjoying it, and I thought “Gee this is a great show, and that fact about Chinese surnames is really interesting. I’ve got to blog about that.” So I just did it.

Do the two main topics of that post go together? No not really, but at least they were tied together in the guise of the TV show that I was watching. That’s not the point thought. The point is to blog about something as soon as it comes to you.

You know how you’re at work, the bank, shopping or just walking down the street and something either happens that makes you think “I’ve got to remember to blog about this” or you think of something to blog about? Well how often do you end up blogging about it when you finally get in front of your computer? Probably only half the time right?

Well stop that.

If something occurs to you to blog about get to a computer and blog it.

Whether it’s just a few lines or turns out to be a few paragraphs it doesn’t matter. Just get those thoughts out there. Make sure you have a spell checker on your computer or in your browser, and watch your sentence structure and grammar so that your post doesn’t end up looking really bad.

There’s some posts that I spend a lot of time thinking about and going over again and again as I write them up.

There’s other posts that I write in advance and save as drafts, and then go over before I publish them.

Then there’s some that I just write on the fly and post without much thought.

You know what I’ve found? While the posts that I’ve taken a lot of time over get a fairly good response, it’s the posts that I just write quickly, the ones that just pour out of me that tend to get the most response.

So what do you say? Are you ready to give quick blogging a try? It can’t hurt. You can always delete or edit the post if you change your mind about it.

Write it, read it, post it. Just do it!
