Sofie and the tale of her clocks

August 10, 2007 by Tricia

Our elderly neighbor is becoming a little troublesome. You know she’s the one I call my stalker right? ’cause she watches everything I do – even peeking at me through the window when I’m sitting in the dining room on the computer. Uh huh.

Well, I guess with this heat wave it’s been hard on the cities electricity supply. So almost every day over this past week the power goes out for a minute or two once or twice a day. It’s a pain in the butt, especially if you have to reset any clocks.

We’ve been asking Sofie’s family to get her new clocks with batteries in them so that when the power goes out it doesn’t disturb the clock. Finally after two months of requesting this they fixed one clock. The oldest clock who’s minute button doesn’t even work half the time wasn’t replaced or fixed though.

Now the whole problem with this is that whenever the power goes out Sofie comes and bangs on our windows – not our doors, our windows usually scaring me half to death, and asks us to fix her “watch”. uh huh – you mean your clock. You should know that word by now Sofie.

The only thing is – she doesn’t ask us to fix the clock when the power goes out at nine in the morning. She waits until it’s 10 at night before she wanders over to our house in the dark! Grrrr. I wish her family would just listen to us and fix this for us and her.

On our last trip to her house we noticed that one of her light fixtures is starting to come out of the ceiling. So now she need to replace a light fixture. We are not doing that! Her family is going to finally have to do something for her.

Sofie almost might as well live with us since she’s here so often. Her family says they’ve offered to have her live with them, but she refuses. Maybe she knows she’ll be just as neglected in their home as she is by them in her own home.

Do you have a neighbor that frustrates you to no end?

Will they be successful in September?

August 10, 2007 by Tricia

I was just thinking about how our neighbors are going to try to sell their house in September. I don’t know why they didn’t try to sell in June or July. I’m pretty sure the real estate would have been better at that time of year.

I mean if your house looks nice and if your yard has some plants in good condition it should be easier to sell right? Besides, aren’t people with kids looking for houses at the end of the school year so that they can get settled before their child’s new school year starts?

September … yeah I can see houses selling in September but it’s probably less likely that a family with school aged children would buy at that time of year … well unless the parents were moving to the city for a job or something.

Actually maybe this works in our favor. Since we can hear our neighbors much too well it might be good if people who don’t have children buy the house next door. Believe me – we call our neighbors child, a 13 year old boy who’s on the heavy side two tons of fun! No we aren’t really picking on him because he’s a little overweight … it’s just because he’s so loud! He bangs up and down the stairs and when he was younger I swear he used to jump up and down on the couch. Bang, bAng, BaNg! So noisy!

It’ll be quiet around here soon

August 10, 2007 by Tricia

Haha! I think it’s going to be a little quieter around here for a while! Our noisy neighbors are going on vacation! An orlando vacation. Yeah!

I think they are leaving sometime next week and they’ll be gone for at least a week. No more karaoke parties for a while! No more tuba or electric guitar vibrating through my walls. Yeahhhhh!

Then, as I said the other day, they might also be moving! They’re going to put their house up for sale sometime in September to test the market. Oh I hope that they get an offer or two! Their house is a corner lot which I’ve heard are harder to sell, but then they have almost twice the yard space of everyone else in the neighborhood so that might help them sell.

Oh I can’t wait for them to go on their holiday and then maybe move away.

The neighbors might move!

August 8, 2007 by Tricia

My karaoke neighbors might be moving!!!

Watch now that I said it won’t happen.

They’ve decided that September is a good time to try to sell their house so they are going to “test” the market and put it up for sale in September.

Dare I say that I do hope that they sell and that we get quiet neighbors? I fully realize we could get even worse neighbors but I’m willing to take the chance.

Not only do these people karaoke almost daily and or play guitar and tuba! They also cook quite a bit of their food in their enclosed back porch. You know, the porch that’s attached to ours? They fry their smelly foods back there.

Not only does this smell up our house if we have our back door open, but it also makes me fear that a house fire will start. Our houses are made of brick but if their porch caught on fire so would ours.

Oh I hope we get better neighbors.

Low Water Pressure

July 29, 2007 by Tricia

We had a strange thing happen the other day. I think it was Tuesday evening. I went upstairs to use the washroom and I noticed that the toilet barely had any water in it. Hmmm that was odd. Then I turned on the bathroom faucets and they worked, water poured out of them.

I thought oh no! We’ve got some kind of problem with our toilet. The last thing I wanted to have to do was call a plumber.

So I took the lid off the toilet tank to have a look inside and there was no water inside. I tried flushing the toilet to see if that would trigger the tank to fill up and it didn’t. At that point I was calling Chris to come upstairs and have a look.

Meanwhile I was also looking for the little knob near the floor behind the toilet where we could turn the water on and off. I don’t think every house is like that. The old home owner put on off knobs under the sinks, in a closet for the bathtub water supply and as I just said behind the toilet. Maybe he had lot of plumbing problems in the past? Or maybe he was just a very smart man making it easier to fix things and still have water in the rest of the house?

Well it wasn’t the little knob – that hadn’t been touched and it was in the on position. Chris thought maybe it was the pump thing in the toilet and he thought he might be able to get a replacement part the next day.

At that point I remembered that we were watering our garden using a sprinkler. I asked Chris to shut off the water outside so we could see what happened. He refused at first saying no way – the water is still coming out of the taps and the tub, it can’t be low water pressure.

Well … it turns out I was right. I eventually convinced him to go outside, turn off the sprinkler and see what happened and as soon as the outside water was off the toilet started filling.

That had never happened before. Maybe some neighbors were watering as well the last time one of us flushed that toilet and it just didn’t have enough water pressure to fill the water tank?

We do have low water pressure in this area. I hate it!
