Bombs found in car delay my husbands return home!

August 31, 2007 by Tricia

I really should have titled this post “Bombs found in car gives my husbands co-worker yet another excuse to miss work and screw up my husbands schedule!”

Ok I guess I should give you a little background on this story. Hmmm?

A little over a week ago a Toronto Lawyer received a petroleum based letter bomb in the mail. Letter bombs had also been received by another Toronto area resident and a Guelph Ontario resident during this same time period. I believe the other Toronto resident that had received a letter bomb was injured when the letter was opened, otherwise no one else was hurt by these bombs.

Skip to last night, Thursday evening, at around 10 pm. The police had a suspect in the letter bomb cases and they’d had him under surveillance. For some reason, when the suspect pulled into a gas station, one not too far from here by the way, they decided to make their move and arrest the man.

A key fact as to how this affects my husband and I is that Chris’ co-worker, the one that calls in sick all the time and then says he arranged for Chris to go into work early etc, happens to live in the immediate area of the gas station arrest.

At about 10:30 this morning when the police were examining the suspects car which was still parked at the gas station they discovered THREE bombs!

They immediately closed off the area. Residents in the area couldn’t leave, and those wanting to get into the area couldn’t get in. You can read the whole story and watch video of the bombs being moved at the Toronto CityNews site.

Now, Chris’ coworker had just moved to an apartment in this area and I’m not sure if he’d still been in his former residence in Brampton (about an hours drive from here, longer in traffic) overnight and if he’d just been trying to go to his new apartment to get items for work, or if he was in his new apartment and couldn’t leave for a while. Either way, the guy was supposed to start his shift at work at 12 noon and he hasn’t shown up yet.

Chris now tells me that the guy needed a shower and a change of clothes so he’s currently driving all the way to Brampton to do those things and then he’ll drive back to work. He’s not likely to make it to work before Chris has to leave at five which means Chris will get stuck at work- again.

This is a Friday. Normally there’s a lot of traffic on Fridays during the summer because people get off early to start their weekends. On top of that it’s a long weekend so traffic is bound to be even worse than normal.

On top of that, the bombs were moved at about 2 pm this afternoon to the Leslie Split area where they can be detonate in a relatively unpopulated area. The gigantic convey of police and emergency vehicles caused a lot of road blocks which I’m sure affected traffic on other major routes in the city too. By the way this convoy of emergency vehicles was the largest I’ve ever seen! Ever!

Around the time that I learned the bombs were on the move they were probably passing close to my house since I live only a few blocks away from the Don Valley Parkway, a major route through the city.

At this time the bombs have reached the Leslie street split and are being examined by the bomb squad. They’ll soon be detonated.

My husband is working a special shift today. 9 to 5. He’s working that shift because tonight we begin my family reunion by going to see a baseball game – the Blue Jays Versus Seattle. Chris must be home by 5. I’m not sure that will happen now thanks to his co-worker. I really don’t understand why he had to drive out of the city to get clothes and so on. He wears hospital scrubs when he’s working and there’s showers in the locker rooms. Grrrr.

As if bombs in Toronto weren’t excitement enough there’s also been a Brinks Truck robbery in the East End. Again, not quite in my area, but close enough to my part of town. Shots were fired and there might be injuries.

I’d actually like to get downtown before 6 pm. Why? Well the cast of Heroes is here in Toronto. They’re at Dundas Square across from the Eatons Center signing autographs and promoting their show. I’d love to see them and maybe take some photos before we go to the baseball game.

See how exciting Toronto is? Lots of things happening today – some good, some bad.

Now I’m not even sure we’ll make it to the game on time! We’ve got to meet my brother at a certain time as he’s got all the tickets!

Wish me luck!

Just a couple of photos

August 28, 2007 by Tricia

Yesterday I noticed that one of my roses that I’d yet to photograph was blooming. We had a guest over for several hours yesterday so I didn’t photograph the flower, however, a little while ago I decided to go out to my garden and take a photo of the flower.

Just a couple of photos … yeah right.

I was outside for an hour and ten minutes. Guess how many photos I took of the many flowers in my garden? About 300!

How many people do you know that can take that many photos in a little over an hour? That’s five pictures per minute! Maybe more than that when you take away photo set up and cleaning lens time. No wonder I’m a little tired out after my garden adventure!

Now the tedious task of uploading them to the computer and cropping a few of them begins …

The clean out begins

My neighbors are serious. If the tapping and repairs going on weren’t enough of a message that they mean to sell their home successfully the pile of discarded items outside there house should be enough to convince me.

I just looked outside and they’ve been cleaning out their home. There’s old rolled up carpeting, a few blinds, what looks like a painting or a photo frame, an old couch and a few bags of garbage.

Gee I hope they’re going to cart that stuff to the dump on their own because this past Tuesday was Garbage day and garbage is only picked up twice a month in our area of Toronto. They’d better not be planning on leaving that pile on the boulevard grass for the next week and a half.

Oh now a wooden chair has joined the pile. Hmmm if anyone needs some used furniture I might have a deal for you.

They’re going to sell!

August 17, 2007 by Tricia

Yesterday I awoke to the sound of tapping on my bedroom wall.

It was the neighbors.

As the day passed I don’t think there was a wall adjoining our house that was tapped, banged or hammered.

What on earth were the neighbors doing?

Chris happened to see our neighbor outside when he walked to the corner store in the early evening and he found out that they’d spent the day doing minor repairs to their home. We’d already figured as much, but it was nice to confirm the source of all the tap tap tapping.

Their real estate agent had given them a list of suggestions for repairs.

So yeeaaaaahhhhh it looks like the neighbors will soon be putting their house up on the market!

I’m not surprised that they had at least some minor repairs to do. Since they moved in five and half years ago they’d never done a thing to the house and I think it was badly in need of repairs. I’m sure there’s more that they haven’t got to yet and might not do.

Believe it or not the constant tapping throughout the day was no where near as irritating as the loud guitar, tuba or karaoke that we’re subject to from time to time. In fact the tapping didn’t even really bother me at all. Perhaps that’s just because I knew it might mean that our Karaoke neighbors would soon be moving on.

Someone’s been in my garden

August 16, 2007 by Tricia

Do you remember I wrote about a friend from work coming over a week or so ago? I say friend, but I use that term loosely. He knocked on the door while Chris was at work and then told me that he’d pretty much been hanging around outside our house for a few hours?

It creeped me out. This guy is kind of creepy to begin with, but to hang out around our house and to have gone into our backyard a couple of times when he thought no one was home that day was just plain strange.

Well … I think he might have come back on Tuesday. The reason I think that is because some things were moved around in our backyard and now that Chris is back from visiting his family I know Chris didn’t do it.

On Tuesday, after Chris left to go to Brantford I happened to look out into the garden and I saw that my brother in law had hung towels that they’d used at the beach on the clothes line. I also notices that one of our patio chairs was no longer on the patio, but was under the clothes line. I figured that my brother in law didn’t use the clothes line properly and perhaps had stood on the chair to place the towels on the line. Strange, but whatever.

Well I went out later in the day to retrieve the towels, but I didn’t move the chair. It was still mostly on the lawn, partially on the patio.

On Wednesday I noticed that the chair was on the patio again.

Hmmm … I know I didn’t move it and I’m certain that it was on the lawn after Chris had left to go to Brantford … who the heck moved it? A couple of the other chairs appear to have moved as well.

I know it couldn’t have been my elderly neighbor. The chairs are heavy and I’m certain she wouldn’t have moved one, let alone two or three of them.

All I can figure is that Joey might have come back on Tuesday afternoon or sometime on Wednesday and maybe knocked on our door and when he didn’t get an answer hung out in our garden … again.

I haven’t been feeling well this week and I’ve spent a good portion of my time on the couch or sleeping so it’s more than possible that I missed a knock or two on the door. Actually even if I’d heard a knock it’s unlikely I would have answered the door this week since I’ve been feeling so ill.

Come to think of it our car was missing since Chris was out of town so it’s possible that a visitor might not even have knocked and just assumed no one was home.

We actually know a few people that would take the liberty of sitting in our backyard while we were away from home – mainly because they might have just dropped by from work on their lunch break since our workplace is so close, but two of them are on holiday right now so I’m pretty sure it was Joey again.

I don’t want to call this guy and ask him though. He’d take it as an invite to come over if we called him and I’d like to cut our association with him down as he’s really creepy and once you let him into your house he won’t leave! Even if you tell him to leave! Yeah … he’s a strange one. So I guess this will remain a mystery for now.
