Smoggy

September 21, 2007 by Tricia

It’s still been smoggy here all day. I’m not sure if it was just because it was a fairly warm and humid day or if the auto wrecking yard fire had anything to do with it. I’m pretty sure it’s a combination of both things.

Either way, it’s looked pretty much like it would rain all day with that overcast cloudy look to the sky. Kind of depressing. There’s no rain in the forecast at all though.

I wish it would rain. We haven’t had much this summer and frankly my plants need a good dose of rain to keep them looking good as autumn approaches. Instead I’ve sent Chris outside to water.

Our neighbor passed away

September 21, 2007 by Tricia

Yesterday evening our elderly neighbor, my stalker, sofie, came to our door. Well our window – remember she always knocks our windows for some reason. She gave us the sad news that our neighbor across the street, Jack, had died.

He too was elderly and had suffered from both depression and Parkinson’s disease and hadn’t been doing very well over the last two or three years.

About three weeks ago I saw an ambulance come to his house. It was early in the morning and the paramedics brought him out on an ambulance chair and transfered him onto a stretcher on the side walk. I was sad to see him going to the hospital, but I wasn’t overly concerned as he didn’t look too bad and was talking etc. He was also in and out of the hospital quite a bit so I never expected that that would be the last time I’d see him.

Chris went over to see his wife and give our condolences. We’d attend the funeral if there was going to be one, but she said that they were going to cremate him and then just have a very small service sometime next week.

So sad.

The ginger colored hunter

September 17, 2007 by Tricia

Each year we have a cat or two or ten that seem to enjoy hanging around our yard through the summer. There’s a few that I see year after year, but there always seems to be a new one or two each year as well.

This year we’ve been seeing a cat, that I’ll simply call “ginger” due to it’s light orange color, hanging around our front and back yard. Well, not just our yard. It likes to crouch down under our “karaoke neighbors” front shrubs, or I see it skulking across other neighbors lawns on most days.

Earlier today when I was looking out an upstairs window I saw Ginger cat lying in my elderly neighbors garden. It was hiding underneath her many pepper plants. If the cat had been slightly darker in color I wouldn’t have even noticed it as it was well hidden, but due to it’s color and the fact that I was looking at from 20 or more feet above I could see it fairly well. I scratched the window screen to see if it would react and ginger cat looked right up at me.

Ever since we’ve moved here we’ve had a number of creatures in our and our neighbors backyard. Raccoons, cats, squirrels, mice and yes I’ve even seen rats! I don’t think we have any rats living in our garden or on our property, but I’m sure some live in our neighbors shed and under the back porch of another neighbor. Mice too of course.

I think Ginger cat was patiently lying in wait for a mouse or rat to cross it’s path.

Prior to realizing what the cat was probably doing I was going to scare the cat out of my neighbors garden, but when it occurred to me that it was likely doing me and my neighbors a service I left it undisturbed. I don’t really like to think about animals hunting one another, but neither do I like the idea of rats and mice running around my yard, so I guess I’m hoping that Ginger cat was successful and had a good meal this afternoon.

I suppose that’s the main reason why I’ve seen so many cats in our yard and our neighbors yards over the years. They really shouldn’t be out – I’m sure they have homes and their owners just let them out. However, if they are going to hang around I hope they are catching animals like the mice and rats that I know would soon overrun the area without some form of pest control.

I should look out my upstairs window more often. I saw a squirrel doing some strange stuff too. I wrote about it on my gardening blog and I’ll link to the post as soon as I publish it.

My neighbors are infuriating!

September 15, 2007 by Tricia

Ohhhh my neighbors make me so mad sometimes!

Chris is out of town today and I’m convinced that whenever they don’t see our car in the driveway they must decide that no one is home at all. So up goes the music, the awful karaoke and any other really loud noises they can make.

It happens every time I’m home and Chris is away for the night.

Since I had an awful night and barely got any sleep I lay down on the couch at 2:30. Unfortunately I was woken up by loud guitar at 4 pm. Loud Guitar. Like it was in my living room.

I had a little freak out moment … I started to yell “Shut up, Shut up, Shut up”. Naturally that didn’t work because their music was so loud I could barely hear myself yelling. I tried phoning them, but I guess they didn’t hear the phone!

So … I went to the basement and got a hammer. I then proceeded to bang on the cement wall of the basement.

I think that worked because the loud guitar stopped.

I can not wait for these people to move! They told Chris in mid-August that they’d be putting their house up for sale in September, but so far no for sale signs gone up in front of their house.

There’s been lots of banging around as they repair things. Today I’ve heard hammering and sawing. Oh and the loud guitar … It’s not like we’re super quiet or anything, but they are so much louder it’s unbearable!

Just last week the lady of the house told my husband that they’d be having an open house this week. I’m pretty sure that didn’t happen.

I saw their house when they first moved in and it didn’t seem that bad. I mean, I would have done some work, but it didn’t look like it had to have work done. I guess 6 years of not maintaining their home must have taken it’s toll though, because they still aren’t ready to put that for sale sign up.

I know we might get even worse neighbors, but I wish they’d hurry up and move!

BTW I wrote this earlier in the day. Now it sounds like they are having a party! Geeezzz. I don’t mind if they have a party, but do they have to ALL jump up and down and sing to every song? Not to mention the karaoke that’s going on too? My house if vibrating!

Dramatic entrance

September 11, 2007 by Tricia

As Chris arrived home from work gigantic flashes of lightening occurred behind him and thunder began rumbling through the skies. It was like a scene out of a bad horror movie! Since the thunder and lightening we so close together all I could think of was him being struck by lightening so I told him to hurry up and get inside and let go of that metal screen door!

I had the windows open in the house and as soon as Chris was safely indoors the rain started coming down hard along with a very strong wind. Small loose papers that we had on the telephone table by the door and on our living room table suddenly began swirling around the room. I started to expect to see Mailboxes, posts and garbage cans flying around outside!

Talk about dramatic!

Chris ended up having to go outside again. This time to the backyard to take down the umbrella on our patio table. Strong winds have caused the whole table and umbrella to tip over before and we don’t feel like paying to replace the glass in our patio table.

Strange how the storm just suddenly picked up like that. We were expecting rain, but I don’t think we were expecting such a storm! How’s the weather in your area?
