Leaky basements!

October 26, 2007 by Tricia

Shortly after Chris came home from work this evening we got a call from our neighbor across the street. Well her son called us actually. Her husband died two weeks ago and at first we thought that something might have happened to her as well when her son called!

Luckily he was just calling because he’d been a great son and he’d purchased his mother a new LCD TV. Trouble was he couldn’t get it into the house by himself and he needed Chris to give him a hand. No problem at all.

These poor people. A day or two after our neighbors husband died we had a crazy rainstorm that I guess ended up causing a pipe to overflow or burst in their basement! Her whole basement was water damaged!

Every day since then I’ve seen plumbers and contractors going in and out of her house. Chris says they’re breaking up all the cement in the finished basement so that they can put in a whole new cement base or foundation! Huge job obviously! They have one section partitioned just for their tool storage for this big job.

I guess the only good thing about this happening to our neighbor is that she’s probably been kept busy over the last two weeks. I’m sure she’s grieving and sometimes keeping busy is the best medicine.

I’m so happy that our basement has never shown any signs of leakage! When I was looking for a house to buy I must have looked at 50 houses over a months time. April of all months! However it turns out that rainy April was a good time to look at houses. Almost all the houses that I looked at had leaks in their basements! In fact, this house was the only one that I looked at that had a dry basement. Obviously it was a good buy!

This weeks theme is Practical

Ok well this might be exactly my dream house, but I’d like one with many of it’s features.

I love this houses wrap around verandas and upstairs balconies. I think it’s a very practical use of space and well, practically or not I just love houses with upper and lower balconies and porches.

This house is in the Beaches area of Toronto.

Glorious Morning Glory

This is a photo of a fading Morning Glory. I took this photo last Sunday in the late afternoon.

Morning glory vines are very vigorous. I’ve spent many years pulling tiny plants out of my back flower bed but each year some come up. This one escaped me until it grew enough to bloom.

The morning glory’s vine flowers bloom in the early morning – often at first light and by the time that the sun is full, perhaps 10 am or so, the flowers begin to die down and close. Each flower only lasts one day.

As I said I captured this one in the late afternoon as it was dying. It was still a beauty.

If you want to see a gorgeous rose pop on over to my photoblog Breath of Life.

Our neighbors house is for sale!

September 28, 2007 by Tricia

Chris should be home from work any minute so I just went to the door to unlock it for him and while I was there I peeked outside. Chris walks home from work since we only live about three blocks away from the Hospital. I didn’t see him, but I did see a For Sale sign on our karaoke neighbors lawn!

Yeah! Finally!

They must have had a ton of repairs to do before they could put their house up for sale. I heard sawing noises as late as yesterday and hammering etc as early as what? Mid- August or so?

I’m not certain it’s their best moving putting their house up for sale at this time of year. They have a teenage son and they say that they want to move close to the husbands work (which really isn’t all that far from here) so does that mean their son will have to change schools? I think he’s in grade nine or ten. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have wanted to change schools while in one of those grades. Poor kid.

Well, we’ll see how things go. If they do sell I hope we get better, quieter neighbors! If we don’t, well, that will just re-enforce the fact that the next home we buy will be detached!

Flyers, flyers go away!

September 28, 2007 by Tricia

Do you get a lot of flyers in your mail? We do!

We get flyers and junk mail that’s addressed to us, plus our post office has hired people to go around and only deliver flyers. It’s not just the mailmen making deliveries. No, some days we get two deliveries! What a waste. I swear that at least 80% of the mail and flyers we receive end up in our recycling box.

Now, since we’re having a provincial election the political parties are going door to door dropping off their flyers as well. You know those party platform flyers that really don’t tell you anything about what such and such parties platform will really be if they get elected? Yeah that stuff.

Today we got one for the local Communist party! Geez, that’s about as useful as getting flyers for Phoenix real estate! I mean really.

The stuff that I hate the most are the little sticky advertising banners that some people decide to stick on our screen door. They’re usually for moving or junk removal companies. Hey, I just cleaned the glass and now it’s got an ugly sticky spot.

Do you hate getting flyers too? Are they a waste of your time and of good paper?
