What a bad week

March 1, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve had such a bad week it’s not funny.

I felt the need to put up a cute semi funny picture … better that than think about something that happened to me on Tuesday that still scares me!

I’ll probably write about what happened sometime over the weekend, but not right now. I’ll just say that something happened while I was walking my puppy and I thought that we were both going to get beat up! It kind of made me lose my faith in the thought that more people are good than bad.

I hope that you’ve all had a better week than I have!

Open up! It’s cold out here!

Aw … the deer want in!

If it keeps snowing here the way it has we’ll probably start to see deer wandering around! Honestly. We’re in the process of getting about 30 more centimeters of snow here in Toronto and those of us with small lawns literally have no place left to put the snow. We might also have an ice storm too. Oh goody.

I posted this photo of the snow almost as high as our car last week on one of my other blogs after last weeks snow storm and now the snow is piled higher than our car. I really can’t lift the snow much higher and when I do try it just starts to slide off. This is getting crazy! Apparently we’ve already reached or passed the February record for snow at our airport and we aren’t even half way through the month! This is certainly a snow year around here!

I wonder if any market research studies have been done about how this much snow affects people and their shopping habits! I’m sure a lot of shovels and snow blowers were purchased here in Toronto this month.

I’ll have to try to take a photo of our puppy trying to climb up the mound of snow on our lawn. She sinks into it right up to her neck. Still … she insists on climbing it so that she can do her business. It’s pretty funny. If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been the last couple of days I’ve either been hiding indoors since it’s been getting to -30 Celsius (-22 F) with the windchill – and when you’ve got a constant fever that’s really not much fun, or else I’ve been outside shoveling!

Reflections

Mirror boxing

Don’t you love watching animals looking at themselves in a mirror? This cat looks like it’s about to tickle it’s reflection.

When I was walking Midnight our Lab puppy this afternoon we passed by a small apartment building and she happened to stop and gaze at the glass apartment door entrance. Well she started barking her head off after she finally noticed herself in the glass.

Sometimes when she sees her reflection I think she realizes that it’s herself and other times she seems to think it’s another dog. It’s pretty funny to watch her reaction.

Toronto’s a melting pot

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

I live in a city with a number of different cultures. Toronto has been named the most diverse city in the world several times in the last decade and anyone who visits here can easily see why. We truly are a melting pot.

There are some people that might say all these different cultures meshed together don’t work, but I’m not one of them. I think it works just fine and it certainly keeps things interesting!

I live in what’s known as Greek Town or more formally “The Danforth”. I think there used to be a larger Greek population in this area a decade or two ago, but as the population ages new people are moving into the area, like Chris and I, and there are now at least four main cultural populations in the area. Greek/Macedonian, Muslim, Asian and of course Canadian. By Canadian I guess I generally mean people that were born in Canada and or have several generations of family in the country.

As a nurse working in a community hospital I’ve learned quite a bit about the many different cultural populations in our city. I gradually learned the best way to approach certain people. Just like dealing with people of different ages, there are things that you can do that are ok and others that would seem offensive. For example, in some cultures a woman shouldn’t handle a mans shoes or perhaps it was that as a nurse I shouldn’t handle their shoes as it was considered lowering myself or being a servant?

Anyway I’ve never had any problems dealing with people. Not in my neighborhood, the city in general or in any of my jobs. Hey, I get along with everyone!

The only major difference that I’ve noticed since we got a dog is that the Muslims that would usually pass my house, sometimes smiling or waving to me as I worked in my garden now literally run by if I’m outside with my puppy.

I believe this is because to Muslims dogs are thought to be unclean. I haven’t looked it up, but I know back when I was single and lived in an apartment two Muslim men were very nervous to come into my apartment when delivering a new futon because I had my sisters dog there. They said they would have to pray more if they got dog saliva on them. I’m sure there’s a longer explanation or more to it than that, but that’s what I was told.

Perhaps someone that knows more than I could explain what it is about dogs that’s so bad?

Anyway, I understand why the people who formerly walked by my home in peace now scurry by, but it kind of hurts my feelings too. It makes me feel as if I’ve done something wrong.

When I was outside this afternoon a young Muslim girl was coming home from school. Midnight had just defecated on the grass in the boulevard in front of my house. I was stooping over to clean it up and keeping Midnight close to me at the same time as I knew she didn’t want the dog to get near her by the way she slowed down and by the look on her face.

I stopped what I was doing and pulled my Lab even closer to me and said “don’t worry, I won’t let her touch you.” Yet the girl still ran by, skirting away from us as far as she could. I think I tried to make it clear that I understood she didn’t want the dog to touch her and that I was doing my part to keep it from happening … yet she still ran by.

It made me feel bad.

Cigarette butt covered lawns – yuck!

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

It really warmed up here today! Remember all that snow that I showed you a photo of the other day? Well it’s all melted. I think it warmed up overnight as there was still lots of snow when we took our puppy to the park for the second time yesterday evening. By noon it looked like Spring around here.

It’s supposed to get really cold again overnight so Puppy and I took advantage of the nice weather and went for a really long walk this afternoon.

I walked on the sidewalks and for the most part Midnight walked on everyone’s lawn. She was enjoying smelling the grass, mud, plants, melted poo and signs of other animals. Of course she loved smelling all the disgusting stuff. I had to keep pulling her to the side saying “no, yucky poop” or something to that effect.

What disgusted me the most was that a few of the lawns were literally covered in cigarette butts. I guess these were from people that were smokers but who chose to or weren’t allowed to smoke inside their homes.

Now, I’m a smoker. I hate to admit that. I hope to do something about my bad habit in the next few months. I smoke inside … but as I said in one of my recent posts we use air purifiers in the house to help improve the air quality. I clean out our ashtrays frequently so there isn’t a build up of cigarette butts as that adds to the smell in the home.

You’d think that if someone was smoking outside regularly … and I mean really regularly if the whole front lawn is covered in cigarette butts .. that they’d put a can outside to put their butts in or something.

Disgusting. It was worse than the lawns that we passed that had dog poo on them that hadn’t been cleaned up.

BTW when I go out for a walk with our puppy I often bring a cigarette with me. This time I actually forgot to bring one and it didn’t even occur to me that I didn’t have a smoke with me until we’d gotten about a mile from home. Good huh. Maybe there’s hope that I will quit after all.
