I think someone called the police on me!

April 7, 2009 by Tricia

Oops, I think I scared my neighbors!

Just before midnight I went outside with our dog to let her do her final business of the evening. She took her time playing in the odd April snow that we had on Monday and then we headed back to the house.

When I got to the screen door and tried to enter it wouldn’t open! Was it locked? Had my coat sleeve accidentally hit the tiny latch on the screen door handle on the way out?

So there I was standing outside in the cold wondering how I was going to get back into the house. Chris had gone to bed earlier and surely he was asleep. How was I going to get his attention? I mean, it’s not like I could access the inner door … I was standing outside our enclosed front porch so there was three doors between me and the warmth of the house.

Oh boy.

So I started rattling the screen door in it’s frame and calling out Chris’ name. Considering the time I didn’t want to yell too loud, but I had to call out Chris’ name in the hope that he’d hear me, didn’t I?

I’m not sure how long I was out there calling Chris’ name and rattling the screen door, but I don’t think it was any longer than five minutes. Finally Chris appeared at the front door in only his underwear. He couldn’t understand why I wasn’t in the house. I had to rattle the screen door again to show him I couldn’t get into the front porch. He reluctantly came forward and opened the door – he didn’t want to get cold!

I asked him if the door had been locked and he said it wasn’t. I guess the condensation inside the porch must have frozen on the screen doors latch and it quickly froze shut when it closed behind me when I took the dog outside. Funny … that never happened when it was really cold during the winter or, for that matter, ever before!

Once I was inside I started to calm down. I guess I got a little rattled at the thought of being locked (or frozen) out of the house at that time of night.

Once I’d put our Lab Midnight to bed in her crate I happened to notice some car lights outside as I passed the front window. I seemed like the car was parked or idling on the corner, so I parted the curtains and guess what?

It was a police car!

Oops!

I went upstairs to change for bed and told Chris that a police car was in front of our house across the street. As I told him the police car moved forward, did a U-turn and headed back towards the hospital where we both work. There’s almost always police in the Emergency Department so one of them must have taken the call that was so close. Good response time if they were coming for the “disturbance” I was creating.

I’ll bet that one of my neighbors heard me yelling for Chris or rattling the door and called the police. The neighbors in the house adjoining ours might have heard the door rattles and thought someone was trying to break into their home, perhaps. Or maybe someone thought my calls of Chris’ name were really cries for help?

Either way, I’m pretty sure someone close by must have called the cops. Sorry! My bad! < blush >

I think I might just slip the cellphone in my pocket from now on when I go out late at night – just in case something like that happens again!

Strange, isn’t it that the door seemed to freeze closed – I mean, it’s cold out, but not all that bad.

Have you ever been locked out of your house? Or frozen out as in my case?

One of the things I hate about Spring

March 26, 2009 by Tricia

One of the things that I hate about Spring is all the garbage that suddenly appears on our lawn, sidewalk and blows around on the street once the snow melts.

Toronto overall is a very clean city, but there are still people who toss tissues or other garbage on the ground once they are done with them. There’s certainly enough public garbage and recycling bins in the city that no one walking down a city street would have to walk very far before they’d find one to dispose of their garbage … but some are too lazy to do that. I mean there’s three garbage and recycling bins each within a two to three minute walk from my house alone, yet my lawn has junk on it.

So now .. with the rain and wind blowing, every time I go outside I discover used tissues stuck in my bare rose bushes, crumpled fast food wrappers, paper cups, newspapers, flyers, plastic bags, cigarette buts and other garbage that I have to clean up.

This year seems worse than others. Either the city hasn’t been cleaning the streets as much as they used to or people are getting lazier about properly getting rid of their trash.

Even in the winter when there was snow on the ground I found garbage in the snow bank that wouldn’t normally be there like plastic pieces of broken car tail lights and something that I think was some kind of industrial knobs. Strange stuff … maybe some of it fell off a truck or something.

Like I said earlier Toronto is a very clean city compared to many large cities. So I really don’t have much to complain about … but still, there just seems to be more leftover winter garbage around this year than there usually is.

Do you hate cleaning other peoples garbage off your property once Spring arrives and the snow melts to reveal all the extra junk you have to pick up?

I’m Ffffreezing … Brrrr

March 23, 2009 by Tricia

Just before 7 pm this evening Chris came up with a great idea … or so we thought at the time. I’d just noticed that some of my purple crocus’ were coming up in the garden and Chris suggested I go outside and take some pictures of them since it was still quite light out.

He also said that he’d rake the lawn (like I suggested on Saturday when it was warmer out!).

Unfortunately .. it didn’t end up just being a photo taking and raking 15 minute outing … it never is when we go outside and visit the garden …

We both went outside, I took a few pictures and Chris started raking. Next thing I know I’ve got my pruners in my hand and I’m bent over one of my garden beds clearing out leaves, using the pruners to cut off dead foliage and generally tidying up the garden. Chris also got into clearing leaves out of some of the garden beds too.

Then when I said I was cold … maybe it was about 8 pm and pretty much full dark by then, we abandoned the backyard where there’s still a lot of work to do, and went to the front to at least rake the lawn.

The only problem with going to the front of the house is we end up talking to our neighbors. I finally met the new Lab/boxer mix puppy that our new neighbors got about two weeks ago (CUTE) and we talked to other neighbors too. By the time the neighbors disappeared and our still partially frozen front lawn was raked it was about 8:30.

My fingers are numb and I’ve got the shivers … Do you know how cold it is out right now? It’s -1 C (30.8 F) … no wonder I’m freezing! Brrrr!

Do you ever get carried away like that when you’re doing something … even if it’s really cold or much too hot outside?

Spring – It’s here, it’s here!

Can you tell that I’m happy that Spring has finally arrived? Ok, so it’s felt like Spring here pretty much since mid-February with the exception of a few very cold days here and there, but now it’s actually starting to look like Spring outdoors.

I just spotted my first crocus in my lawn earlier today. That, to me, is always my first true sign that Spring has truly arrived.

Purple Crocus

I used to have snowdrops in my garden as well, but they’ve either died out or they are blooming under the leaves that cover my garden beds. LOL However I do know that there are Snowdrops blooming in the area because my husband spotted some earlier today while out walking the dog.

My chives are also up and several of my other plants appear to be coming back to life as they are greening up and developing leaf buds.

Hmmm … I wonder if Raccoons like chives? I’ve spotted a raccoon in our backyard several times over the last week (the back yard security light goes on whenever there’s movement out there), and the raccoon is always near the Chives and where the first crocus has come up whenever I see it. Of course I scare it out of the yard … but I wonder if it’s nibbled on the chives?

I guess it won’t be long now before flowers like these tiny irises, hyacinth, muscari, tulips and other plants start to make an appearance!

Purple Iris

I think I might do a little yardwork today if I can get this pesky high fever I have to go down.

What a beautiful day in Toronto

March 6, 2009 by Tricia

It was just lovely today here in Toronto. Warmer than most early to mid-Spring days! By 3 pm it had reached 18 Celsius (64 F)! We’re supposed to have above zero weather up until next Wednesday or so, but it looks like today will have been the warmest – unless something changes over the next few days forecast wise.

It was far too nice a day to stay inside. Earlier in the day I looked outside at the garden, there were still a few small patches of snow in the shady areas, but it was melting fast. For a few minutes I even contemplated doing a little yard work – tidying up the garden, but it’s far too early. I’m sure we’ll have some freezing weather before the end of March.

So … Midnight our young Labrador Retriever got the most benefit from the nice day. She got a nice long walk with me in the afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all went out for a very long walk. All in all, Midnight probably got two hours worth of walks today.

In the winter when there’s lots of snow Midnight likes to roll in the snow. We’ll be walking along and she’ll jump on someone’s lawn or in a snow bank and either roll around in the snow or do a faceplant and slide her body along the snow as I walk along side her. I try to make sure the snow is clean where ever she does this. It’s pretty funny to see the faceplant slide. I’ve seen her push her body like that through the snow for 10 feet or more. I’m sure anyone watching must wonder what the crazy dog is doing.

There’s very little snow now – only in really shady areas. That didn’t stop Midnight though … she tried to roll in the wet and sometimes muddy grassy areas and even attempted her faceplant slide. Of course I stopped her each time as I didn’t want to bring a dirty muddy dog back into the house. LOL

She tried to roll in the wet grass a few times when Chris and I took our evening walk, but it was just too wet and muddy.

We did something different for our evening walk with Midnight. When Chris came home he told me that our hospital was finally getting two new Restaurants. Al we’d had before was the hospital cafeteria and a coffee/ quick food area in the lobby that was run by the cafeteria staff. The new restaurants or food places are Subway and a Panzerotto Pizza. The Subway shop isn’t open yet but the Panzerotto Pizza had opened today.

So we walked to the hospital and while I stood outside with Midnight Chris went inside and ordered us two Panzerotto’s (They are like folded fried pizza’s, yummy, some might call them Calazones?) and some chicken wings. The place was really busy and I ended up standing outside with Midnight for over 45 minutes! It was probably busy because it was just after 7:30 so a lot of staff were getting off work and visiting hours were about to end so maybe some of the visitors were getting food before going home too.

Since there were a lot of staff getting off work I wasn’t too bored waiting for Chris to get our food. I talked to a few nurses and other hospital staff that I knew. One ER nurse that I used to work with had just received a new Bedat watch for her birthday. Man was that a nice watch!

After walking home Chris and I sat down to eat our food. I’m soooooo full now. That Panzerotti was filling! I don’t think I’ve had one for several years and now I know why … they make you feel so stuffed! In fact the panzerottis were so filling Chris and I only had two wings each so there’s still 10 left for us to have with tomorrows dinner.

How was the weather in your area today? I’m pretty sure most of the Northern States and Canadian provinces had fairly nice weather today.
