My niece took in a nice haul at her shower

January 11, 2008 by Tricia

Last Sunday I went to my brothers house in Aurora for my niece’s baby shower.

Earlier in the week I’d gone out shopping with Chris to pick up something on her baby gift registry. Instead of getting just one item on her list I got three, plus one extra gift. I couldn’t help myself! Plus it didn’t hurt that everything I bought had an extra 20% off either!

I got her and Eddie Bauer diaper bag, a Jolly Jumper baby carrier, a soother pin with a cute little duck on it and a teething ring that can be put in the freezer.

A lot of people turned out for the shower and she got a lot of gifts. She did really well! We all passed each gift around and some of the things were so very nice.

My sister and her daughter were also at the shower so I got a ride back to the subway with them. Well, actually my nieces boyfriend came to pick us up in his parents Charger. I didn’t realize how much that car had changed over the years!

I remember when I was in high school one of my good friends boyfriends had a Dodge Charger. I think it was a 1970 or ’72 or something and that was quite the car! The newer Charger that my nieces boyfriend was driving looked like a toy car compared to the old Chargers that I remember. It was a nice ride though. Very smooth.

I’d say it almost looked like a kit car. Maybe I got that impression because it had billet grilles, fancy hubcabs and other add ons. I guess my nieces boyfriends father must be a car enthusiast.

It was great to see some of my family and my niece who’s expecting. She looked great. She due near the end of February and it looks like they are having a little girl.

I’m pretty sure when the babies born that I’ll be buying more gifts. That babies going to be spoiled!

I’m stuffed

December 25, 2007 by Tricia

I’m stuffed and tired.

I spent the afternoon cooking a Christmas dinner for three that probably would have served eight to ten people easily. Naturally that means we have tons of leftovers!

I made mashed potatoes; mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; steamed asparagus with a little butter and lemon; sweet peas; stuffing with pine nuts; cranberry jelly; sweet and dill pickles, turkey gravy and of course the main entree – a 16 lb turkey. Yummy! We also had plum pudding with rum sauce for dessert. I also had a pumpkin pie on hand, but none of us had any of that.

My sister arrived around 4 pm and we ate at about 6. I had started preparing the turkey just after noon and it was in the oven by a little after one.

I did the majority of cooking, but Chris helped out by washing our good china, crystal and silverware before we used it. We hadn’t used it for a while and it was kind of dusty! Then he helped out by clearing most of the table and doing the majority of the dishes afterwords.

There’s a lot of food and turkey left over. We only ate a bit of one side of the turkey and I haven’t carved the rest of the meat off of it yet either. In fact we were all so stuffed and tired after dinner that I just put the turkey in the enclosed back porch (it’s cool out there and it’s -2 Celsius out right now) so it’s almost as if it’s in the fridge. Sometime later this evening I’ll work on getting the meat off the bone and pack it away properly.

Since we’ve had our puppy ( a month and a day, she’s 16 weeks old today) we haven’t had any guests over. We’ve had people to the door, but no visitors. So my sister was the first guest to spend some time with Midnight in our home.

My sisters voice is similar to mine and I have a feeling that we must smell similar as most of the pets I’ve had in the past have taken to her right away. Just as I expected Midnight loved my sister and she really liked our baby too. My sister used to have two dogs and she’s raised puppies before so she was very comfortable giving commands to the puppy and the puppy paid attention to what she said for the most part.

Overall it was a great day for all of us. Midnight is very tired. In fact she’s finally just settled down on the floor by the couch and she’s fast asleep. I’ll put her in her crate soon. Her eye has been good for the last few days but now that she’s so tired her eye looks a bit swollen again. I hope it’s just because she’s overtired and not yet another problem.

I hope everyone had a great day too and that you’re all stuffed with great food too!

Christmas with the in-laws!

December 24, 2007 by Tricia

How is everyone on this lovely Christmas Eve?

We’re having a quite Christmas here this year. I don’t think we’ve celebrated Christmas on Christmas day with Chris’ family in years! It’s always a day or two before Christmas or the following weekend. It seems that no one can manage to get together on Christmas day for some reason.

When my parents were around we had this problem too of course, but we tried to alternate Christmases between the families.

Anyway … Yesterday we went to Brantford to have Christmas with Chris’ parents and his two sisters, their spouses and their kids.

It didn’t quite work out that way though.

Chris’ younger sister had been to Sarnia the night before seeing friends and as they returned home they discovered that their young daughter was very sick so they ended up in a walk in clinic. My niece has strep throat so bad she won’t even drink any liquids! I don’t envy my sister in law at all today!

Chris’ older sister and her husband didn’t make it either! It turned out that she had a cold or the flu and since they are going to Hawaii on Christmas day she wanted to rest and get better before their flight.

So as it turned out it was just Chris and I, Chris’ parents and one of his aunts.

Chris nephew was in the basement with a friend while we were visiting, but for some reason he didn’t want to eat dinner … so that dinner for 12 or 13 people ended up being for only 5!

So that was Christmas with the in-laws.

Oh and I’ve said before that my mother in law can’t really cook … I think she said she cooked the turkey for 10 hours. It was good but it was very dry.

We brought Midnight along for the day so she could meet the family. She was afraid to go in the house when we first go there! I coaxed her in and then we kept her on her leash for a while as we led her around the main floor showing her the house and introducing her to the in-laws. She did pretty good while she was there. No accidents (actually she hasn’t had an accident for close to a week so she might be housetrained!) and she didn’t jump on people too much. Over all I’d say it was a good experience for the puppy. (and us)

Puppy Training classes

December 22, 2007 by Tricia

Midnight our Lab puppy

Well Midnight’s gone to two puppy training classes so far. She’s having a ball at the classes.

She’s not so hot on the car ride there, but once we get out of the car she starts pulling on her leash to get into the Petsmart to see her friends. She always barks at the entrance to say hello to any dogs that might be near the checkout. I call Petsmart her doggy Wonderland.

Being her adopted mummy I think she’s kind of cute, smart and adorable … but judging from pretty much everyone she meets response she must be a cute puppy. Everyone seems to love her. Whether we’re walking on the street or walking around in Petsmart people always come up to pet our little furball. She’s very enthusiastic and gets right into greeting people and their dogs if they happen to have one with them.

The training classes are ok. I’ve done a lot of reading and have been working on training her at home using many of the techniques that they are teaching in Petsmart so I don’t feel like I’m gaining all that much by going through the classes. However, as a way to socialize Midnight to other people, other animals and in particular other dogs I think it’s great.

It’s also nice to talk to other puppy owners to learn of their experiences.

One lady has a yellow Lab puppy that’s about two weeks younger than Midnight. Molly is her name. She’s just a little smaller than Midnight but I’m certain she’s got about ten pounds on our pup. Midnight is of course still sick – more on that in another post.

By the time we get home on Friday evenings we have a very tired puppy on our hands and she goes right to sleep … and that’s nice.

Remembering our trip to Vegas

December 14, 2007 by Tricia

Ever since Chris and I came back from Vegas in November we pay special attention to TV shows that show the Vegas strip. You know show’s like CSI, movies and anything else that’s set in Vegas.

We always try to see if we can see any of the Vegas hotels that are near the one we stayed in or the specific hotel that we stayed in, the Imperial Palace.

We really didn’t see all that much of the strip while we were there. Only about three blocks of it at the most. Pretty much all the restaurants or bars that we met other bloggers in were fairly close to our hotel so we didn’t have to go far.

We did take the monorail a few times, but only back and forth to the convention center for the blogging conventions that we were attending.

I think the next time we go to Vegas we’d better make more of an effort to see the whole strip at the very least!

For those of you who’ve gone to Vegas did you see the whole strip or were you like us and only saw a small part of it?
