Today’s Solar Energy Can Power The Entire Planet

March 15, 2013 by Trish

solar energyThe relatively high cost of energy filters down to the cost of just about everything because anything that requires transportation to the market will feel the pinch of higher energy costs and then pass the cost down to consumers. Those driving to work see the effect of higher energy prices every time they go to the pump. The new normal when it comes to energy prices has led many to call for alternative energy sources.

Solar Power Moves beyond the Development Stage

Both environmentalists and those who oppose the use of fossil fuels for geopolitical reasons say the world needs cheaper forms of alternative and renewable energy. But solar energy has suffered in the past, simply because it was not efficient or affordable enough to power a country, much less the planet.

Most new technologies are expensive when they first hit the market, but improvements to production lead to lower costs. Henry Ford’s Model-T, the first car built on assembly lines with interchangeable parts is a perfect example. More recent examples include personal computers and flat-panel televisions. Today, more experts are looking into solar power as a renewable alternative to traditional fuels like coal and oil that can give similar ubiquitous power throughout the world.

A New Study Shows Solar Could Power the World

The World Future Energy Summit recently met and released a study carried out by the World Wildlife Fund. This study, contrary to the argument that solar energy could never work on a large scale, indicated that harnessing the sun’s energy could power all the energy needs in the seven major regions the study examined.

In Indonesia, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, Turkey, Madagascar and the Indian province of Madhya Pradash, just 1 percent of the landmass in each of these nations could power 100 percent of the population by 2050 if they made a serious move toward the use of solar power and used only photovoltaic technology.

Benefits of Switching to Renewable Energy

These nations all have extensive sunlight throughout the year, but they also have relatively high populations. The use of solar power for energy benefits the world in a few major ways. The first is a cut in the demand for traditional fossil fuels. Lower demand usually leads to lower costs. Additionally, once the photovoltaic cells are set up, they can continue to produce energy as long as they get sunlight. While there would be some necessary maintenance, solar power is a renewable energy source that could theoretically last as long as the sun itself. A switch to solar power and a corresponding cut to fossil fuel use would cut down on the amount of pollution and carbon greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Therefore, there are both environmental and economic benefits in making the move toward solar energy.

New technology is making solar power on a large scale possible. This new study by the WWF shows that a small fraction of land could power entire nations. The long-term environmental and economic benefits of this move are obvious.

Grow Your Own – The Dream of Self Sufficiency

October 8, 2012 by Trish

Grow Your Own – The Dream of Self Sufficiency

Autumn veg

When that electricity bill lands on your doormat as you’re about to leave for the job you hate do you ever long for The Good Life – growing and rearing your own food for the table and living free from the binds of modern living? Here’s our guide to the ultimate self sufficiency dream.

Land

If you’re based in the UK these are interesting times for those wanted to by land. With a growing housing crisis and a stagnant economy, the coalition Government is temporarily scrapping planning permission laws for house extensions and making some significant noises to suggest a relaxation of planning laws and possible development of green belt land. Buying a plot of land now might prove to be a significant investment if approvals for building become easier to get in the future.

To achieve our self sufficiency dream for a family of four, we reckon we’ll need a couple acres of land.

Shelter

Ideally you’d want an eco-home – straw built or timber frame perhaps, with low energy requirements. However, most properties with the land you need to go self sufficient are rather run down, draughty farm building, so pack plenty of thick socks and jumpers.

Food

Surely one of your top questions should be, what will we eat and will there be enough? You’re going to need to use you land carefully to ensure you have a food all year round. Vegetable patches will represent the majority of your crop and you will want to rotate crops each year.

It can take a lot of back breaking digging to get the ground ready for your vegetables and will you have the energy for digging on vegetables alone? You could kill two birds with one stone and get a pig. Pigs are nature’s answer to the rotavator, churning up the ground as they snuffle around for food. If you move your pig pen to wherever you need new ground churning up, they’ll do the hard work for you.

Pigs, chicken, vegetables, fruit trees and knowledge of how and where to find wild food are all vital for the self sufficient family

Water

Equally as important as food, the ultimate self sufficiency dreamer dreams of a borehole and a well, living off water pumped from their own land. Another important and free source of water is rain. Catching rain water is the perfect way to get water for crops and washing.

Power

The looming energy crisis is a global concern and responsibility. Renewable energy is the only future and massive and vital investments are being made to in such sectors as offshore wind power. These macro-scale projects trickle down into technological developments on a micro-scale and home wind turbines have become an excellent way of powering your home for free – free from those electricity bills. And with feed-in-tariffs, you might even find you get paid for energy you don’t use.

To keep the romance in the self sufficiency dream, be sure to install a wood burning stove for those chilling winter nights – you can even cook your vegetable and pork casserole on the top!

No this isn’t a Laundry Blog

January 19, 2010 by Tricia

Wow, I just realized that three of the last four posts that I’ve made this week are about laundry. LOL … no this is not about to become a laundry blog .. I’m just excited about my new front load High Efficiency washer and dryer and the experiments that I’m doing with them to get our clothes even cleaner and softer.

Hey it could be worse .. I could be talking about hemorrhoids relief or something like that all week. LOL

I promise, there will probably only be a couple more laundry related posts and then I’ll calm down. I think.

I’m actually thinking about doing a post or two about using vinegar, baking soda and borax in the laundry and around the house as cleaners. Just about everyone does laundry right … maybe you’ll learn a few money saving tips?

Static Eliminator dryer sheets – natural , no chemicals

January 19, 2010 by Tricia

My husbands off work today and it’s shopping day. Usually we get our groceries and anything else that we need on Mondays, his usual day off, but this week he’s off on Tuesday.

Chris is great about doing things around the house and doing the shopping. In fact, when he does the grocery shopping he’s pretty good about sticking to the list we make in advance so as a result he spends less than when I go with him! When I go I find a few other things to add to our groceries, usually things on sale that we could use during the week or in the near future so the bill gets a bit higher. LOL

Right now he’s at a friends jamming on the guitar but when he gets home we’re going to go to this HUGE health food store called The Big Carrot. It’s a store that sells organic groceries and other products like natural herbs, vitamins and natural weight loss supplements and so on. They also sell a lot of green products.

The reason we’re going there is to buy something called the Static Eliminator. I just found out about it last night. It’s basically a dryer sheet that can be reused about 250 times. We only do about 12 loads of laundry a month so that means a Static Eliminator dryer sheet would last us close to two years!

It has no chemicals on it, it’s hypoallergenic, eliminates static in the laundry and softens clothes. It basically does what a Bounce dryer sheet or any other popular fabric softener dryer sheet is supposed to do, but without all the chemicals. Plus it doesn’t leave any residue on your clothes or inside the dryer so it’s better for the machine and your clothes. It’s also better for the environment without all those chemicals and when you consider that you aren’t throwing out dryer sheets each week.

Now that we have our new washer and dryer and we can use less laundry detergent (and have it rinsed out better!) I’m experimenting with using more natural products to clean our clothes and soften the laundry – like vinegar, baking soda, Borax and hopefully that natural dryer sheet.

Hopefully we can find the Static Eliminator dryer sheets at the Big Carrot. If we do, I’ll let you know how it works for softening clothes and eliminating static compared to name brand dryer sheets.
