Things that make me Shake in My Boots

May 18, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things Tricia is afraid of

1…. Thunder! Yes, Thunder, not lightning. Well, yes, I do have a healthy fear of lightning, but why on earth do I want to crawl under the covers and hide my head when it thunders? My brother brought back a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog from Africa, back in the 80’s, and that dog was terrified of storms. I used to hide under the table with him!

2…. I was told that when I was a young child a motorcycle drove by and I went into hysterics over the sound. Perhaps that’s why thunder bothers me.
3…. If I could choose how I might die drowning wouldn’t even make the list. I’m not a strong swimmer, and the thought of sinking and not being able to get back up scares the heck out of me. I do however love canoeing and whitewater rafting. Go figure!
4…. I’m afraid of heights. Even standing on a chair bothers me.
5…. Even with my fear of heights, I find myself up on ladders more often than I’d like to be seeing as our house is in a constant state of renovation! Plus, I used to rock climb. I haven’t done that for years but I bet I still could.
6…. I don’t like bridges very much either. That’s probably a combination of the fear of heights and maybe even the fear of drowning thingy.

7…. Does a bridge make a loud noise when it falls down? If it does then bridges might also be on my thunder list. They do rumble when you are standing on one and a big truck drives on it. Are you following my logic or have I totally lost you?
8…. Fear of falling! Just take a look at what happened to me a month and a half ago to know why I fear falling. Oh my chin and jaw!
9…. Hey I’m a klutz. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, so it’s only natural that I fear personal injury due to my klutziness!
10…. Speaking of being a klutz, and injury, I just burned the top of my right index finger and the bottom of my left middle finger while trying to take a hot pizza off the pan. What can I say, the pan slipped, I grabbed it. Stupid!
11…. Fear of fire. When I was 5 our old farmhouse cottage burned down with my brother inside of it. I remember standing outside with my mother and grandmother calling for my brother for what seemed like hours. Fortunately, unbeknown to us, my uncle had run into the house and rescued my brother shortly after the fire started.
12…. I fear for my husband. A year and a half ago he passed out at work, right at the triage station in Emergency. His ecg was altered, so they thought he had a rare sudden death heart arrhythmia called Brugada Syndrome. He was thoroughly tested, something like what they did on HOUSE last night, and they weren’t able to find any problems. But, his ecg is still altered and he still feels faint and shaky at times and when he does I worry over him. He’s too young to die, we have a lot to do yet.
13…. Pain. I fear pain. I have constant chronic pain in my abdomen and it always gets worse at night, worse if I lie down. So I don’t sleep, and when I don’t sleep I have more pain. Ow.

So Am I a wuss or what? I think most of my fears have a rational basis, but maybe I’m wrong. What do you think? Do you have any fears?

** Update** From some of the comments I think some people think I’m sitting here living in fear. Nope! I’m not. I’m not quaking in fear all day everyday. This list is for fun. Everybody has fears, I’m just opening up and listing a few of mine.

Oh and please check out my Wordless Wednesday post below as well! Thanks!

Random acts of kindness

May 7, 2006 by Tricia

My husband and I went out shopping when he came home from work yesterday afternoon. Actually it was more like evening – he needed a rest when he arrived home and spent a couple of hours in the backyard talking to all of our neighbors. The nickname I have for him certainly suits him – Sir Talkalot. We didn’t hit the road until about 5:30 p.m..

Off we went. First to a hardware store to pick up some more items for all of our on going renovation projects. I really don’t know if we’ll ever have this house finished. Some days it doesn’t feel like it. Then we went to the grocery store so that I could pick up all the ingredients that I needed for my grilled veggie recipe. Chris then decided that we needed to get some beer, and while we were going there way anyway, I decided that I wanted to get some wine to use to marinade the chicken with that I was planning to have with our BBQ that night.

When we pulled into the Beer Store (in most of Canada we have Government run beer and Liquor stores) we noticed a man standing near the entrance playing the guitar and singing. He was obviously playing for money. He wasn’t a street person, but he was someone that looked like he’d had a hard life, and was either pulling himself back onto his feet, or who was at great risk of losing everything.

Since my husband is an accomplished guitarist we’ve both developed a good ear for music and for other musicians talent, and it was obvious that this man knew what he was doing. He was playing quite well.

As we sat in the car we both looked down at the little storage compartment in the car, where a glass finger slide has sat for oh, approximately one year. My husband bought it and quickly discovered that it was too slim for his thick fingers, and that he wasn’t going to be able to use it for playing slide guitar. It was placed in the car with it’s receipt to be returned, but of course, never was taken back to the store. My husband has a habit of buying things and not returning them. When we are renovating he often buys one or two extra of whatever item we are working with at the time, just in case we need it or in case he makes a bad cut in a piece of wood for example. Unfortunately at least 2/3 of these items never get back to the store that we purchased them from because he either misplaces the receipt or just doesn’t do it. Luckily we’ll find a use for many of the extra items at some point. I hope!

At least we found a use for the too small slide! We got out of the car and approached the street musician. While he played my husband held up the glass slide, and sort of put it near the mans fingers as he played. The man had no idea what Chris was doing. Chris was actually measuring the thickness of the mans fingers to see if he could use the slide, but the man thought Chris was just showing it to him.

Chris and I talked with the man for a few minutes and he accepted the slide. His brother was nearby and he was also a guitar player, who happened to have experience playing slide guitar. Eventually Chris went into the beer store and I walked a little ways down the street to the liquor store where I bought not one bottle of wine, but three! No, I’m not a lush. Really.

My husband was supposed to meet me in the liquor store but he never made it. I arrived back at the entrance of the beer store to find him with his foot propped up on the newly purchased case of beer playing the mans guitar. We both felt good about having given away the too small slide. The street performer appreciated the gift, and who knows perhaps he’ll be able to expand his repertoire and earn a little bit more money by using his gift.

We aren’t always generous with street people but I think we stop and give them change more often than many people do. In fact, as I came out of the liquor store with my three bottles of wine, did I say that two of them were large bottles?, there was a man selling ” street news” outside the store, so I stopped and gave him one of our Canadian clunky $2 coins (twoonies we call them).

Actually, when I stop and think about it we’ve given away a lot of money this week. My brother was in town visiting from Vancouver, and we spent last Monday evening downtown with him, his wife and my sister. We must have given change to at least 4 people that evening. Oh and my sister-in-law gave an odd gift to our waiter. His back was very sore, you could see how much pain he was in as he served us or stooped to pick something off the floor. We called him over and we asked him if he wanted something for his pain. I happened to have my pain pills with me, but they are very strong and I likely wouldn’t have felt comfortable giving out such a strong medicine to a stranger, however she had some Tylenol #3’s on her and gave him two. By the time we were leaving the restaurant the waiter was feeling much better.

We had a couple more trips downtown and to the airport this week, and as we drove under the highway underpass, and through the downtown streets we occasionally encountered street people or ‘Squeegee people’ (ones who try to wash your car windows) when we were stopped at lights. I think we gave change to most of the ones that made it to our car window before the lights changed.

I’m glad we don’t go right downtown too often or else we’d really be broke. My husband would give money to everyone with a cup that he encountered if I let him! I’m a little more cautious, and or selective about who I give money to. I find that once you start, the other people see what you are doing and flock around you if you are in an area that has a lot of street people. Kind of like pigeons when you think about it. When I give out change I try to pick people that look like they really need it.

Another random act of kindness that we occasionally perform is giving out parking passes. If our parking tickets or passes still have time left on them when we are about to leave, and we see someone parking in a lot, or on the street, we’ll often walk up to the driver and give them our pass. Most people are so surprised when we do this. A half an hour or more of free parking? Thanks stranger!

Have you done any random acts of kindness lately? Given away an unusual item to a stranger who might need it? Carried someones groceries to the car? Anything that put a smile on another persons face just because it was so unexpected?

How do you feel about street people? Do you occasionally give change to ones that you pass regularly or who look needy?

When Chris and I finally reached home yesterday evening we enjoyed a nice meal of Shiraz marinated grilled chicken breasts, grilled veggies in a Dijon vinaigrette, rice and salad. Mmmm it was so good. Our last random act of kindness was that we shared it with our boarder. Ok, we have to feed him, that’s part of the deal, but it sounded good when I wrote it.

Thirteen Things about Tricia

1…. I hear noises in my house when everyone else is in bed asleep. Sometimes it sounds like music is playing faintly in the distance.

2…. Our house used to be owned in the 1940’s by a man that fixed radios for a living- in the home. We found papers and receipts stuck in the baseboards when we were renovating that led us to this conclusion. Things that make you go hmmm?

3…. I stay up way too late every night (3 a.m. to 6 a.m.) and need to start getting to bed earlier. Maybe that’s why I’m hearing strange sounds in the night?

4…. I love to cook but haven’t done as many home cooked (made from scratch) meals as I like lately. I’ve been cheating with pre-made frozen stir fries, or already made hamburgers.

5…. I’m more than 6 inches taller than my husband. Our wedding pictures look funny. We have one with him standing on a chair to kiss me.

6…. I got sent home from a school 3 day outdoor camping trip when I was 13 because I got caught skinny dipping with a few other students.

7…. I wouldn’t eat cooked veggies when I was a kid no matter how my mother made them, but I would eat a number of them raw. So it wasn’t all that unusual for everyone else to be eating mashed potatoes or boiled turnip (yuck) and green beans, and for me to have each of these items raw on my plate. I still like raw green beans and potatoes.

8…. My parents were in their mid forties when I was born, and my oldest brother is almost 20 years older than I am.

9…. My eyes are Hazel but when I’m tired or have been crying they turn brilliant green, and when I’m feeling ill they have a yellow tinge to them.

10…. I don’t think I have a favorite color – I like several shades of most colors.

11…. My favorite meal is a nice juicy rare steak, but I can’t eat that very often because my tummy doesn’t like it lately.

12…. I’m reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown right now and I’m loving it. I think it might actually be better than the Da Vinci Code.

13…. I’m going to post a grilled vegetable recipe tomorrow that you should come back for and try on the weekend. It’s fantastic. I haven’t had one person tell me that they didn’t like it and most come back for seconds and thirds and …

Fake Nails

April 21, 2006 by Tricia

This is my husbands hand:

Fake Nails

Yep, my husband wears fake nails! I don’t know what’s gotten into him lately. This is the second time in the last 6 months that he’s been overcome with the sudden desire to have fake nails.

The first time, Chris was visiting me while I was working in the ER. He offered to go to my favorite coffee shop- Tim Hortons- to get me a drink. Naturally I said yes, I never say no to either their coffee or their Ice Caps. I love Ice Caps. He didn’t have any money so I gave him $20. I think he was going to get some drinks for some of my co-workers as well, our treat.

Two hours later my ever wandering husband returned. He tapped me on the shoulder while I was with a patient and they jammed his right hand into my face. “See what I did?” All excited.

“You… You have fake nails? Man that looks weird.”

“Yeah, I went to check out that place at the strip mall Just Nails. They weren’t busy so I got my nails done.”

“You did, did you” Still stunned. My co-workers are laughing.

“I had one lady doing my nails and two gave me a foot massage and a pedicure.”

“You got a pedicure too?” (What the heck is going on?) “How much did all of this cost?”

“$20 bucks”

“Let me see if I’ve got this right: You had three women working on you for $20? Just what kind of massage did you say you got?” I’m laughing picturing this, but he’s so excited about his first pedicure that he doesn’t realize how funny this situation has become.

“That’s right and I really liked the pedicure. I want to get another one soon.”

“I can’t believe you have fake nails!” Staring in a stunned manner at his oddly feminine looking hand.

“Well you know I was trying to figure out a way to make my nails harder for guitar playing. Bruce Cockburn (a famous Canadian Musician) supposedly puts crazy glue on his nails to make them harder and a lot of serious guitarists use fake nails.”

This explains everything. My husband hasn’t suddenly become fascinated with fake nails, manicures and pedicures, well maybe a little he only did this for his guitar playing. It is true that many famous guitarists use various methods including fake nails to give them more picking strength.

That was his first experience with fake nails.

The nails are only on his right hand, which makes it look even stranger. The first set of nails he had were really thick and while they did give him the nail strength he was looking for while playing guitar, they looked just terrible. He also kept them on for about three months and they got uglier as time went by. The second set of nails are much thinner and more natural looking. Well, sorta.

When he approached me earlier this afternoon mentioning that he wanted to get fake nails again I wasn’t thrilled. The first ones not only looked weird but they also felt disgusting when he’d touch me. Yuck. I tried to dissuade him by reminding him we have a big family wedding to go to next weekend. “Your going to have fake nails at Petra’s wedding?”

My attempts at stalling the inevitable didn’t work and off he went to get his “new” nails. They don’t feel quite as odd when he touches my skin, so that’s good, but damn, they still look odd!

Any male readers out there experiment with fake nails? or enjoy a pedicure every now and then?

Ladies, do you have any stories to tell about your man doing something distinctly feminine?

I don’t think my roomie Ed has fake nails, but I’m not sure. I’ll have to ask him. In the meantime, why don’t you visit Ed at Parenting Toys and see his post “I remember when …” and add some of your childhood memories to his post?

Medical Marijuana?

April 20, 2006 by Tricia

I’m amazed at the traffic in this city. Toronto is after all the 5th largest city in North America so what did I expect! I Live almost downtown- A 10 to 15 minute drive if there is little traffic. My sleep clinic appointment was at 3:30 right in the middle of the down town area, and of course right at the start of rush hour. It took us 45 minutes to get there. Which wasn’t too bad when you compare that to how long it took us to get home- 1 hour and 20 minutes!

My husband was driving and for some reason he took the streets that are always busy, 24 hours a day. As we drove home I was wishing that I had brought my camera with me. Since we were sitting in traffic most of the time I could have taken some great shots of this diverse city. We drove through Kensington Market, the heart of China Town, the Fashion district, Queen Street West- the hip area, the financial district, the slums of East Dundas all the way to my area which is called “The Danforth” or Greek town.

If I’d had my camera I could have shown you just how different each area is from the next. It’s a beautiful city. If you’ve never been here before I think you should make plans to come for a visit. Let me know if you’re coming- I’ll be your tour guide.

Oh, we saw three movies being filmed on the way there and back too.

The sleep clinic doctor was very nice. I mean very, very nice. He was tall and handsome and quite friendly. I don’t think I’ll mind my next appointment with him at all. I saw a literally 80 year old allergist last week with poop breath, so this new doctor was refreshing.

The Dr. isn’t quite sure what my sleep problem is right now. I was sent to him to evaluate my problem getting to sleep after a night shift, but since I haven’t been to work for the last 5 months due to my illness he can’t really evaluate my sleep pattern related to my shift work. I do have a bit of a problem though … I mean, it’s 4 am and I’m sitting here on the computer instead of sleeping like I imagine most of you in my part of the world are probably doing.

I think we’ve decided that at this time, my biggest problem is my pain and how it affects my sleep. The abdominal pain wakes me in the night but usually isn’t too bad when I first get up. However, as I go through the day and eat food the pain gets worse and is usually quite bad by late evening onward which makes it harder for me to feel sleepy or want to go to sleep.

Now that I think about it, maybe you are keeping me up too? All the great writing as I surf and battle. If all of you would just write something boring for the next day or two maybe I’d decide to give up and go to bed?

He’s sending me for a sleep study. They tried to book it for next Monday night but I said no way! Next week is the first week in a long time that I don’t have a single doctors appointment booked. I’m looking forward to that. Plus I have a big wedding to get ready for. So I’m going to do the sleep study the following week. Not looking forward to that! I have to be there at 8:30 pm and they told me that lights are out at 11 pm. When I told them that it’s very unlikely that I’ll be able to sleep at eleven they called the Dr. and I now have special permission to go to bed at midnight when I do the test. Yeah! That will still be a problem but I’m going to try.

The Dr. also told me that there is a clinical trial going on that has something to do with insomnia related to pain. He called the researcher while I was there and left a message to see if I could get into the trial. I may not be able to because I have a chronic disease but he tried. Hopefully I’ll find out whether I’m in or not by the end of the week.

I don’t know much about the clinical trial other than that it involves the use of medical marijuana. In the past I’ve had people ask me “Are you smoking Pot?” when I’ve done something dumb, and in the last two years I’ve had a lot of people tell me that I should be smoking it … well now I might end up taking it in capsule form.

At this point I’m just about willing to try anything that will dull the pain that I’m in, so I hope that I do get a chance to be in this trial.

I’m pretty sure a lot of you have tried smoking and or eating pot before, maybe some of you are doing it right now, but have any of you used it therapeutically? As in for nausea, pain, or to help you sleep? I’d be interested in hearing your comments on the subject.

Speaking of smokin’, my pal Ed over at Parenting Toys is still burning up in the Texas heat. Maybe if you all go visit him at once from this site a waft of cool Canadian air will surround him and make him feel more comfortable? Doesn’t work that way huh? Well give it a try anyway.

Update: March 7th, 2007: Duh, I just realized that the date I originally wrote this post was 420. LOL How funny is that? I just thought I’d update this to let you know that I didn’t do the study with the sleep doctor. I would have had to give up my pain meds for a month or more at a time and I just couldn’t do that. However, I do have a pain doctor now and I saw her this past Monday and she finally prescribed the medical marijuana PILLS, well capsules. I’m going to try my first one tomorrow night. Wish me luck!
