I think we’re getting a park at the end of the street

May 21, 2011 by Tricia

It looks like they’re getting ready to do construction at the end of my street next week. I think I’d better enjoy this weekend while I can because it’s going to get noisy around here!

If I’m not mistaken I think they might be putting in some kind of commercial playground or at least it looks like it. My husband and I took a peek at some of the supplies they put on the site and it sure looks like they’re going to put putting up a playground for all of the kids. We could certainly use a decent park in the neighborhood, but this one might be a little too close to my home!

I guess I’ll find out what they’re really building once they start next week. I just hope they aren’t super noisy. My neighbors are renovating almost daily and that’s enough noise to deal with!

Still having neighbor troubles – why why why

May 5, 2011 by Tricia

I know I said it in my last post, but I’m still thinking of putting my house up for sale and moving. My closest neighbors – on both sides – are driving me nuts with noise. The little kid in the house next door – and her parents for that mater are crazy noisy, it’s like they walk around on their heels day and night, slam things around and their 2 and a half year old seems to cry all the time.

The neighbors on the other side bought the house next door a year ago and they’ve barely been at the house, but just in the last month they’ve started renovating more and more – like almost daily so I’m hearing banging, hammering and drilling noises from one side and thumping, screaming and crying from the house that’s attached to ours.

One recent commenter suggested we sound proof the “party wall” between my neighbors house and ours but we did that about five years ago when we had our Karaoke neighbors. The sound proofing cut their noise down by about 50% – believe me, when they’d pull out their microphones and turn their speakers on that seemed to be pointed at my living room it was like they were in my house .. so yeah, the sound proofing helped, but it doesn’t eliminate all the neighbor sounds because thumps and screams just seem to travel. I hate it.

Oh and yes we’ve talked to our neighbors. They just don’t seem to care. I know most of the noises they are making are just life, but at midnight and three in the morning or 7:30 in the morning I think I have a right not to hear doors slamming, shoes thumping around a house or on stairs for half an hour or a kid wailing for an hour. It’s not fair. I’m sick at home, 24 hours a day … I can’t get away from these noises so there’s no relief for me.

Oddly enough, with all the problems with our neighbors they seems to still think we’re best friends. I saw the neighbors who are renovating this evening and the woman and I got into a talk about her recent weight loss. She told me she started losing weight after reading some african mango reviews of all things. I’d never heard of it before, but if it’s working for her great. Anyway, at least with these neighbors, once they finish their renovations, as long as they don’t have any bad habits or anything we’ll probably get along with them, their house isn’t attached to ours. It’s the other neighbors that are the real problem.

Noisy neighbours – seriously thinking of moving

April 26, 2011 by Tricia

I’ve been so frustrated with my neighbors lately that I’m seriously thinking of putting my house up for sale. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you probably know that my house is a semi-detached .. meaning our house is attached to another one and because of that … well .. we can hear our neighbors.

By hear our neighbors I mean, we can hear just about everything … I can hear them walking around in their shoes and talking, I can hear their toddler running around the house playing with her toys, laughing, making sounds, thumping things and screaming and crying and so on.

I try my best to ignore it … but sometimes you just can’t. I mean … before this couple bought the house next door we used to have a family living next to use that loved to Karaoke all the time! Look through some of my old post from 2006 … I have some funny yet frustrated ones about my “Karaoke neighbors” LOL.

I think my neighbors toddler is the biggest problem. She’s about three years old and she still sleeps in her parents bedroom and she wakes up crying just about every night at about 4 am! They just let her scream and sometimes she screams and cries for half an hour. Now we don’t have any kids … in fact it’s looking like I can’t have kids … so it’s kind of unbearable to have to hear someone else’s baby cry every single night and I’ve been hearing this since they brought her home from the hospital. What am I supposed to do … wear my skullcandy earbuds all the time?

The very worst part is that I think the toddler has hit the “terrible” stage! About five weeks ago I started to hear the occasional door slam. Doors would slam in the house next door about three times a day – at different times of day. I could tell it was the little girl doing it … sometimes a door would slam several times in a row, other times just once. I hated it immediately, but I hoped that her parents would take care of it and that within a week or two it would settle down.

After three weeks of constant daily door slams … some happening very early in the morning .. ie 6 or 7 am and some late at night – ie Midnight I was getting pretty fed up. It didn’t seem like our neighbors were doing anything about getting their daughter to stop the door slamming. I’d also noticed that some of the door slams were happening at regular time periods like just after 1 pm in and at about 6:30 pm in the evening … hmmmm maybe that’s when the little girl is very tired or hungry? You’d think that after close to a month her parents would have figured out that there was a pattern to their kids behavior and also figured out a way to stop it … geez … we’d figured out one EASY solution, simply go out and by a bunch of door stoppers and place them in most of the doors then their daughter wouldn’t be able to slam the doors and she’d forget about doing it quickly enough.

About two weeks ago my husband was eating breakfast in a restaurant with his parents and our neighbors were behind them and Chris said something about the door slamming. It seemed like our neighbors had no idea that we could hear the door slamming. Huh … geez … our whole house shakes! Actually our house or ok my couch shakes when the toddler runs around their living room!

Anyway .. after Chris told them we could hear the door slamming it slowed down a bit. It’s still happening, but it’s happening less than it was. We did get mad at them on Good Friday though .. we were trying to sleep in since my husband had the day off work and their little girl must have jumped out of bed and slammed either their bedroom or closest door – at 8:00 in the morning! On a holiday! GRRRRRRR! So my husband, who never sleeps in and who never gets mad, jumped out of bed and started slamming our bedroom door and a couple of dresser drawers before getting back in bed. I guess he wanted to let them know what it sounds like from the other side. It got really quiet on their side after that. Of course their back to making lots of noise again.

Do you have noisy neighbors? How do you deal with it? I know my neighbors are just living their lives .. we’ve asked them many times before if they can hear us and they’ve always said no. I don’t know if they are deaf or if our walls are weird and we get all the sound piped into our home .. we even sound proofed the adjoining wall on the main floor when we had karaoke neighbors and it helped a bit … but not enough. Any ideas?

My garden has lots of new Spring growth

April 12, 2011 by Tricia

I’m so happy that Spring is truly here after the long cold winter that we had here in Toronto. We had some rain this weekend and even some Thunderstorms on Sunday morning but once things started clearing up it warmed up outside and my husband and I took advantage of the good weather to get some much needed yard work done.

I had actually been out on Friday afternoon because I had a doctors appointment downtown and by the time I got back home it was quite nice outside so I brought the dog out to the front yard and I started cleaning up the front garden beds. Just taking the dead maple leaves off the garden that we’d put on the garden beds in the fall to protect the plants made such a difference and it was nice to discover how many plants were already growing beneath the leaves. By the time my husband came home from work on Friday I had the whole front yard done and he was surprised.

I usually don’t like working in the front yard by myself all that much because so many neighbors stop to talk. It’s not that I don’t like talking to them, it’s just that when I’m busy working on something, talking tends to slow me down and since I’m usually not feeling all that well I’m working outside on limited time anyway … so they eat up the time I can work on what I’m doing. Plus … being a nurse … I always end up having some strange conversations with people. I guess everyone wants health advice. Someone always asks me about a pain or health problem they’re having when they catch me outside and I’ve even been asking about things like what’s the best progesterone cream to use LOL. Hey … I answer what I can and advise them to see their doctor for the rest.

When the weather was clear enough my husband and I worked on tidying up the backyard garden beds and we managed to get all of the flower beds cleared of dead leaves too. Everything looks great now. I can’t believe how much green was hiding under all the dead leaves! There are so many plants coming up! Everything from Snowdrops to Lilies, to Monkshood, strawberry plants, Daffodil, Hyacinth, Tulip and Iris leaves are all coming up too. Most of my Crocuses, at least in the backyard, are blooming and soon I’ll have quite a variety of other spring flowers blooming. I just love spring.

Is your garden or yard coming back to life after the long cold winter?

Our car has a big ding in it now, sigh …

April 9, 2011 by Tricia

My pretty little Pontiac has a big ding in the front bumper now. I’m not happy … no not happy at all.

My husband was out shopping this afternoon and he parked in an odd parking spot that had a lamp post at the outer (rather than inner) edge of the parking spot so when he was backing out of the parking spot the front drivers side bumper hit the lamp post and smashed in.

This was the first accident my husband has ever been in and man … did it ever upset him. He’s still feeling unsettled. BTW I’ve never had a car accident either – I know I’d be just as upset if it had happened to me.

I’m upset because our car is damaged, but I’m glad that the accident happened in a parking lot. I mean – if you’re going to have a car accident I guess it’s best to have one at low speed in a parking lot and hit a lamp post and not another car or a person, right?

At first my husband thought he’d have to call for a tow truck to have the car towed to a garage since the car looked undriveable … but he worked at it and ended up pulling out the front drivers side wheel well which was making the bumper bulge out and that made the car drivable again.

It looks like we’re going to have to replace the front drivers side wheel well and the front bumper. I have no idea how much that will cost, but I’m guessing that it will be more than $1000. I’m not looking forward to this repair bill!

In other news I had my own accident. I slipped in a mall on Friday and now my back is sore. That’s why I wasn’t out with my husband today. I wish they’d had non skid flooring where I fell! Ah .. it might not have helped though anyway … my back is so bad these days that any little jar seems to set it off. Hopefully my back is feeling a little better in the next few days .. better than our car.
