Thinking about getting a home improvement loan

March 25, 2007 by Tricia

Being off work and not being able to bring in a secured income obviously has me thinking about money a lot these days. I wish I didn’t have to worry about money as much as I have been since I’m sure that’s not helping me get better.

I am really happy that we were able to remortgage our home last year in late June. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year already. I guess that means we’ve owned our own home for almost 6 years now.

As you might know if you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, we’ve been trying to renovate our home on our own. Not only have I been sick for the better part of two and a half years, but my husband got sick for a period of time in 2004/2005. He’s better now, but both of our illnesses caused major delays in our renovations.

I think we’re about ready to start finishing off some DIY jobs we had already started, but I’ve really been starting to think about possibly getting a home improvement loan and hiring a contractor to do the rest of the work that we want done. I don’t really want to do that, but just in case something happens I’d rather have the house finished than continue to live indefinitely in a state of unfinished renovation. Perhaps some of our unfinished work is even contributing to my illness. Who knows.

I don’t think we’d have a problem getting a home improvement or a secured loan as we’ve been very good about paying down our mortgage. Chris has a steady job and I can verify my internet income.

I guess I’ll have to check into whether we’d qualify for a loan or not given our circumstances. I think we would but I’ll have to check it out. One of the places that I might check will be the UKpersonalloanstore.co.uk they have a lot of information about the various types of loans that one might apply for, as well as articles, loan tips and they even list companies through which you can apply for the various types of loans that they discuss. The site is very user friendly, and people living in the UK in particular will find the information on the various loan products helpful.

The whole idea of taking out another loan is not something that really appeals to me at this time, but it would help us finish off our house and of course, if we decided to sell, or had to sell for some reason we’d get the full house value. I can only imagine how much the value of our home might be if we tried to sell right now with the living room unfinished! I don’t even want to think about it!

Wrought Iron decor for the home

March 9, 2007 by Tricia

My husband and I are still in renovation mode in our home. Yes, we’ve slowed down over the last year or so, but I still keep my eye out for interesting items that I can use in the house once all of our work is finished.

I’m certain that I’ve come across the Wrought Iron Decor Store in the past and bookmarked it. So I figured that I might tell my readers about this great online store now since Spring is coming. I know that if you’re anything like me, along with getting the Spring cleaning done, you might take a look at your decor and decided to buy some new items for your home to spruce it up or begin to get into redecorating mode. I know that whenever this feeling has hit me it’s almost always been during the Spring time.

I really like a number of the products at the Wrought Iron Decor store. They have beautifully designed wrought iron wall hangings and wall grilles in all different shapes and sizes. They also carry wrought iron hanging lanterns with brackets that you could place a tea light or small candles in, in order to give a room a romantic look. Kitchen and bath decor, wall sconce, garden decor, wine racks and accessories all make up just a portion of the great wrought iron items that they carry.

If you like these kind of items take a look at the site. I’m fairly certain that I’ll be making a purchase from this store some time in the future since many of the items go with the look I’m trying to create for my home.

Things that drive me MAD

April 23, 2006 by Tricia

I’m feeling:

Insane

Matt over at Meltwater. Torrents. Meanderings. Delta has a contest going on right now. I think all of the participants might be feeling a little bit like I do today. I’m going nuts trying to figure out his clues. I think I’m close to figuring out “where Matt is” but I’m just not sure. I need at least one more clue. I’ve been to all the participating sites at least 5 times today!

Other things that are bugging me:

1. My border has been working out well, but he’s not following the one house rule that we requested when he asked us if there were any house rules- he’s not cleaning his room. It’s got clothes all over the floor, books and papers scattered everywhere and the bed hasn’t been made since he moved in at the beginning of April. It’s a tiny room and when it’s cluttered it just looks terrible. I see it every time I go upstairs since it’s at the top of the stairs.

2. I’m allergic to the body soap he uses, so I can’t go near the washroom after he’s had a shower. I have asthma attacks when I encounter whatever it is in that soap. We’ve been trying to get him to use the basement shower but he’s only used it twice.

3. My husbands been no help in getting our border to either not use the soap that making it difficult for me to breath, or in getting our border to keep his room at least somewhat tidy. So I’m the BAD guy. I really hate being the bad guy all the time.

4. I have to go shopping for either a dress or a nice pants and blouse combo for the wedding this upcoming weekend. I need new clothes, however, there’s a catch- I hate shopping! If you think that’s weird I also happen to hate long telephone conversations, just so you know, in case you’re keeping track. I know there has to be a few other women out there like me, but I think most enjoy the whole shopping experience. To me it’s very depressing. I’m tall, have a high waist, long legs and clothes just tend not to fit quite right.

5. I also think I might be starting to get a cold. Our border has a bad cold, complete with lots of sniffling snuffling noises that I just adore (see Noises People Make for more info on my reaction to human sounds). I have almost no immune system to speak of so it’s not a big surprise that I might be getting a cold. Actually that’s not true- I have an autoimmune disease so I guess my system is on auto drive. Either way I tend to get sick easily so I try to stay away from sick people. Yeah right- I’m nurse, almost impossible when I’m working. So I’m not happy, my tum is aching a lot, my throat is sore, my nose is a bit stuffy, I’ve got a fever (as usual) and I just feel generally blah.

I guess I’m just grumpy today. My husband is puttering around trying to cut pieces to fit around our inner front door frame. We bought some very nice fluted wood and I think the frame (it’s not a frame but you know what I mean I hope) will look very nice. BUT he cut one piece too short already! Also, every time he’s about to do something he needs my opinion and I’m just not up to it today.

On top of all this Ed from Parenting Toys is leaving me. He’s due to leave sometime late Monday evening but with all my grumpiness he might just pack up his bags and leave in the middle of the night for all I know. Can you guys do me a favor? Pop over to his site and distract him for me so he ends up completing his stay here. Will you do that?

What drives you mad?

Is it a person or something they do that drives you batty? Drivers? Traffic? crowds? Your spouses favorite pet? Inquiring minds want to know- spill it.

Canadian Tire Guy No More

March 11, 2006 by Tricia

The guy Canadians love to hate has been axed!

Canadian tire guy

Yep, that’s right folks! No more noisy neighbor bursting into your home via your T.V. screen telling you that your home improvement tools and gadgets just aren’t good enough and that his are better. Nope, Canadian Tire finally came to the wise decision and axed the long standing commercials. I’m assuming that his T.V. wife is also gone with the deal, unless of course she divorced that do gooder and has taken up home improvement on her own- or perhaps she’ll have her own branch of commercials with her rumored secret lover.

Now I know my American and other international readers probably have no idea what I’m talking about, but I’m sure you have some commercial stars that you just love to hate as well. ๐Ÿ™‚ Actually … since we get so much American T.V. here in Canada … perhaps you guys get a little bit of ours too? Along the lines of free trade? Aw come on … I know you do- I’ve talked to lots of Americans that actually admit to watching the Red-Green show (Canadian tire guy is a bit like him in some ways- but with tools instead of duct tape, and the things he makes stay together), and Much Music and the CBC. Perhaps you secretly loved to hate Canadian Tire guy too?

Anyway, for those that don’t know, Canadian Tire is a hardware, garden center type store along the lines of a small Home Depot. You know, on one of your trips to Canada you might have had to purchase a battery for your car, or replace a flat tire, or get some camping gear for your trip and ended up stopping in at Canadian Tire. You know, the store that gave you that weird funny money back with your change.

Canadian Tire Money
Canadian Tire Money

No that’s not real Canadian money- although ours is colorful and you might think it looks a bit funny. ๐Ÿ™‚

Getting Canadian tire money is like getting a coupon towards your next purchase, although you might have to save it for a while to get it to add up to a substantial enough amount that you can actually purchase a product on it’s own with only Canadian tire money. I think at last count I had about $98 in Canadian tire money saved up. Yep, the stack is about a foot high. ๐Ÿ™‚

So back to the Canadian tire guy and his almost as annoying wife. Canadian tire ran a series of commercials for approximately 8 years starring this man and his wife, and eventually a son, and dog. Yes it just got more and more grating.

He was the kind of neighbor that would see you outside washing your car by hand and he’d come over with his brand new super deluxe power washer and use it to make all the paint fly off your car! His drill, or power saw was always better than yours- quicker, quieter, handier – simply better.

If you were barbecuing he had a great barbecue for you to use and special tools for you to clean it with; if you were vacuuming a small spill his super sucker could do it best; if you were going camping he had inflatable beds for you, and special inflatable pumps that ran off your cars battery. He plugged the solar powered engine warmer too! Everything and anything that’s sold by Canadian tire- he had it- the newest version and he tried to talk you into getting one too. His wife was often by his side plugging the products too, and occasionally she was on her own offering up her latest housewares.

I’m sure that if these characters were actual people that lived on your street you’d be hiding from them all the time. Keeping your curtains shut; working on your home renovations after hours when the noisy neighbors would hopefully be asleep in bed. Heck- maybe you’d be trying to sell your house just to get away from the overly friendly neighbors?

I Googled Canadian Tire Guy and came up with pages and pages discussing him. There are forums, bl0g posts, a Macleans Magazine article (Macleans for Canada is like the New York Times Magazine). Actually it was probably the Macleans article that did him in, it’s story line was similar to the way I’m writing this post. Macleans own discussion forum was filled with letters of agreement on the article- it had to have caught the powers that be at Canadian Tires eye.

So now who’s next to go? We’ve already lost that creepy Alexander Keith’s beer ad guy who was quickly becoming another commercial character that I personally loved to hate. (He was recently arrested for p0rnography)

Alexander Keiths beer man

Hmmm I wonder if Frank and Gordon the new and still lovable Beaver reps for Bell will be the next to be lovingly hated?

We probably should have posted this on our other site- Odd Planet – since that’s our strange news story and humor site, but well- this is my place and so there! ๐Ÿ™‚

I can see the light

February 26, 2006 by Tricia

Last Night …

“push harder”
“a little lower”
“I can feel it”
“slow down”

“Stop, stop, you’re almost there”
“Aw, you got it, I can feel it”
“Oh that’s good, you’ve got it”
“Give me a little more”
“push it deeper”

And that is how we rewired two of our light fixtures last night. What? What’s wrong? You thought this was something sexual didn’t you? Dirty dirty minds, all of you!
