Our skylight is leaking!

July 19, 2007 by Tricia

It’s been raining and raining here all day. At around 6 am it was coming down so hard I could barely see out the window. It’s rained hard on and off all day, but I believe it rained the hardest early in the morning.

At least twice today we’ve seen the skylight in our enclosed porch leak. We installed it a couple of years and it’s been very solid without any problems except one leak after a very hard rain last year.

When we had a similar rain last year that fell directly down on the skylight ( a direction the rain doesn’t normally fall in) it leaked. Chris got up on the enclosed porch roof and did a bit of work sealing up the area we though the leak came from last year and we hadn’t had another problem until today.

This makes me wonder if we’ll ever put in another skylight. Chris would really like one upstairs in the ceiling over the staircase. I agree with him that it would help let more light into the north end of the house, but if it’s going to leak every once in a while like this one is then no … I don’t want it.

Does anyone have any repair ideas? We installed the skylight ourselves even adding extra sealant and rubber? around it to prevent leaks. I’m really disappointed that it’s leaking now.

I got my canvas and I love it!

July 17, 2007 by Tricia

On July 5th I wrote stating that I was going to send one of my photos to Canvas on Demand to have it made into a 16 x 20″ canvas. I decided to send this photo in:

monarch2

It’s a photo of a butterfly that I literally chased around my yard for a week trying to get a photo. It only allowed me about five minutes of that whole week to take photos and I snapped quite a few. I believe this was the best of the bunch.

I went to the Canvas on Demand website and following the very simple instruction I choose the size and style of canvas that I wanted, the frame type and uploaded my photo.

The company sent an email shortly after I completed my order and we corresponded by email as to when the canvas would be complete. They must have started working on it pretty much right away because my lovely canvas arrived on July 13th, only 8 days after I’d ordered it!

Talk about fast! They say it takes four days to create a canvas, then they had to ship it from North Carolina to Toronto, Canada. Honestly the earliest I thought I might get my fabulous canvas was July 20th or later given how slow some delivery companies can be.

Would you like to see my beautiful new canvas? Here you go:

That photo really doesn’t do it justice. I’ll try to get an even better one, perhaps once I’ve decided where to hang it. It’s lovely though isn’t it? The butterfly looks so real. It makes you want to reach out and touch it. When our relatives visited this past weekend they just loved the canvas and might even get one of their own.

The canvas is so beautiful that I’m actually thinking of getting some of my other photos made into canvas’. They’d make great gifts at Christmas time or even for a birthday.

I just had a bright idea. If you’ve been reading this site for a year you might remember that last August Chris and I were part of a Hindu wedding ceremony when Chris’ cousin got married. Their anniversary is coming up in a month and one of the photos that I took at their wedding might make a beautiful anniversary gift. After seeing my own canvas I’m certain they’d love it.

I love Canvas on Demand.

They were in touch with me throughout the whole process so I can honestly say that they have excellent customer service. As for their product – well you can see the results for yourself. Their canvas’ are beautiful.

I’m just so pleased!

If you’ve ever thought of doing something like this please think of visiting Canvas on Demand. You won’t regret it.

Boys and their toys

July 17, 2007 by Tricia

Do you remember I was talking about how Chris wanted our basement, when we are done our renovation, to be a true rec room? Well, after having so much fun over the weekend with his sister and brother-in-law he’s adamant that the basement must be a rec room full of manly toys to play with or on.

You see, once my brother in law came back from the concert that he’d gone to – Roger Waters, he said it was fantastic! – they all went out to play pool, and later they came back and we played poker. Now along with the pool table that he’s got his eye on he wants us to look at poker tables too!

Geesh! I just bought him a new video camera! Now he wants more toys? Don’t they usually say it’s the women that spend all the money shopping?

Well at least we never impulse buy. Anything that I write about that we’ve purchased, particularly if it’s an expensive item, is something that we’ve thought about and discussed for quite a while.

Maybe he’ll get his new toy, but we’ve got to finish the basement first!

A Comfy Sack would be perfect for our Rec Room

July 11, 2007 by Tricia

Don’t those ladies look comfortable?

It’s probably because they are lounging on a Comfy Sack. That certainly seems to be an appropriate name for this chair since these women look absolutely comfortable.

Now, I haven’t personally ever sat on a Comfy Sack – not that I’m aware of anyway, but the beanbag chairs are said to be one of the most comfortable foam beanbag chairs available.

I know that if I show this photo to my husband or let him visit the website he’ll want one of these for our future basement recreation room. He loves this kind of furniture!

The Comfy sack comes in many different sizes ranging from the gigantic 8 foot party sack which appears to seat 6 people to the 3.5 foot Joey model which looks perfect for one person.

If you were to purchase one of the mid to large size beanbag chairs and use it in an active room you’d have a great piece of alternative seating for your guests. One person could comfortably sit or even lie down on any of the Comfy Sack bean bag chairs or several people could lounge and mingle on one.

I wouldn’t doubt that it would soon become one of your and your guests favorite pieces of furniture.

If you were to order a Comfy Sack you’d be able to choose the color and material for your chair. They have a wide selection of fabrics such as twill and Micro Suede as well as many different colour choices.

One of the closest competitors of Comfy Sack is Lovesac. Perhaps you’ve heard of that brand name? Well, the Comfy Sack website has a page with an article – Compare Lovesac Today – that compares the features of one of each companies beanbag chairs. If you’ve ever thought of getting a beanbag chair you might be interested in reading the comparison article to see what the main differences are in each product.

Looking at the comparison chart it’s easy to spot some key differences. The Comfy Sack comes with a 5 year warranty where as the Lovesac only has a 2 year warranty. There also appears to be more Micro Suede color choices for the Comfy Sack.

If you prefer to purchase North American made products you’ll be pleased to know that Comfy Sacks are made in the USA where as the Lovesac is made in China.

There is also quite a price difference between the two brands that were compared. They compared two 6 foot beanbags, one from Comfy Sack and the other from Lovesac. Along with the other differences that I’ve already pointed out the Comfy Sack turned out to be much less expensive than the Lovesac. The 6 foot Video Sack made by Comfy Sack is $332.60 where as the 6ft Super Sac made by Lovesac is being sold for $530.14. It looks like the Comfy Sack is about a third of the price cheaper than the Lovesac.

I’ve only mentioned a few of the comparisons but just the warranty and price difference alone would be enough for me to take a serious look at the Comfy Sack models if I were thinking of purchasing a beanbag chair.

Who knows, maybe we’ll get a Comfy Sack when we are finished our basement renovation. I certainly like the look!

Oh and if you are interested in the Comfy Sack you might be able to win one of your very own. Check out the YouTube contest that they are holding.

Turning a favorite photo into a Canvas Print

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

If you’ve been reading my site for a while you know that I love photography. Actually if you read my site this week you probably already know that I just purchased a new SLR digital camera. So I’m really excited about photos and photography this week.

Then I discover this great site called Canvas on Demand. This site allows you to have a favorite photo printed on canvas. You can have your photo manipulated to enhance the color and or features of the photo, or you can have a light brush stroke style applied to your photo to make it look more like a painting. You can also have black and white photos colorized, or converted to sepia tones to give them an aged effect. Canvas on Demand will also restore damaged photos for an extra fee.

The site is very easy to use. You can upload a digital photo that you’ve taken with your digital camera, scanned using your scanner or if your photo is a print you can mail it to them. The easiest and fastest way to have a favorite photo printed on canvas is to upload it directly onto the Canvas on demand site and follow the simple step by step directions that you’ll be given in order to complete the process.

Within three to four days of placing your order your photo enlargement and or enhanced photo will be printed on a high quality canvas material and shipped to you.

I’m going to do this. I just have to decide exactly which photo I’ll get made into a 16 x 20 canvas print. I’m excited! Within a couple of weeks I’ll have one of my own photos on canvas!

At this moment I’m thinking of getting a beautiful macro photo of a monarch butterfly on a lilac hibiscus flower made into a canvas print. I took the photo last summer after chasing the butterfly around my yard. It was a hard won photo and it turned out beautifully. The bright colors of the monarch look spectacular against the soft lilac color of the rose of Sharon hibiscus flower. Yes, I’m fairly certain that that’s the photo I’ll use.

I’ll be sure to take a photo of my canvas print when I get it! Maybe you’ll want to do this too?

Update: Yes I’m going to use the monarch and rose of Sharon photo that I mentioned. I’ve just placed my order! Here’s what the photo looks like:

Monarch and Rose of Sharon

What do you think? I think it will be beautiful on a canvas!
