If I had a Million Dollars

April 19, 2006 by Tricia

A week or so ago a group of people living in a small town near my former cottage won the lottery. I think there were 7 people in the group and they won 17 million dollars. When the story was originally broadcast it caught my eye because 1. It’s very near my cottage, and 2. I’m likely distantly related to one or two of these people since my mothers family comes from the area.

Maybe I should call them up and say “Hi, Cuz!”?

I saw a follow up to this story last night. Guess what all these new millionaires are doing? They are still working at the same job! I can see one or two perhaps continuing to work, but all of them?

What would you do if you won a million dollars?

Me? I really do like my job but I’m not sure I’d continue to work full time. I’ve been off work for 5 months due to illness and I’m bored silly, so I probably would want to work or do something that occupied my time. Perhaps I’d work part time as a nurse- If I could set my own hours.

I’d definitely pay off the mortgage on our house. No, I’d probably buy a bigger house. This one is too small. Family and very close friends would benefit as well, maybe we’d pay off their mortgages or give them a nice monetary gift. I’d like to say I’d do something special or noble with the money such as giving most of it to my favorite charity, but I know far too many people who could use a little help and sharing it with my loved ones would probably be my good deed.

Oh and I’d have one big party! I’d also travel. There are so many Countries that I’d love to visit.

In other news,

Sofie got me with the hose! Remember the little old lady that I’m mad at? Yep, she had the hose hanging on the holder today when I came out of the house and she was waiting for me. I truthfully told her that I have trouble getting our hose on the spigot so my husband usually does it. It’s not that I’m not handy, it’s just that old water taps and newer hose attachments don’t always fit together that well. really!

She pretended to be confused and started to show me how she couldn’t put the hose on by actually starting to screw it on. It was crooked so I told her to straighten it and she started threading it on, while I stood there and encouraged her. (Evil Grin) I asked her why she didn’t get her son to do it when he visited, each day this week so far, but she didn’t answer.

She then decided that she wanted to water her grass but it turns out that her water wasn’t on. It was still shut off inside the house. I wasn’t about to go in her basement and try to find the right pipe. That really is a job for her family, so now she will have to ask one of them to do it.

Later today I get to go to a sleep clinic for a consultation. Who me? A sleep clinic? Me who does most of her posts in the middle of the night, usually between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.? I don’t have a problem sleeping- I just don’t want to sleep.

Actually one of my doctors wants me to go to get tested because I can’t sleep after I do a night shift, and if I go for a sleep study and they find that something is wrong with my sleep pattern they might write a letter stating that I shouldn’t do night shifts. She thinks that if I have a letter stating that I have a sleep problem my workplace will take it more seriously.

I hope they don’t want me to do the sleep study too soon. I do need to try to get back to a more regular sleep pattern before I do it. I’m also afraid that I won’t fall asleep for them. I can’t sleep well when I stay at other peoples houses or stay in a hotel, and knowing that they will have me wired up and will be monitoring me probably won’t help me fall asleep. We’ll see what happens.

Did you visit Ed at Parenting Toys yet? What you haven’t? He needs some ideas on how to cool off. He’s melting in a Texas heat wave. Got any ideas for him?

Last but not least- Happy Birthday to Bitter Bitch!

Need some ideas

March 18, 2006 by Tricia

So, did everyone go out and have some fun on St. Patrick’s Day? If you did- How are you feeling today? ๐Ÿ™‚ I image some of you are barely functioning.

I didn’t celebrate St. Paddy’s day this year. I didn’t even have a drink! Shame on me- I’m part Irish. I’ve even got the traditional auburn hair and occasionally hot temper to prove it. I should have gone out and had some fun. Oh well, at least I won’t have a hang-over. ๐Ÿ™‚

We can’t really afford to go out on the town and party right now anyway, nor did I feel much like it. I’ve been off work due to illness for four months now. I’ve been getting sick pay from my workplace, but it’s not as much as my regular working salary. I’m glad to have the sick pay although, in one week it will run out. I’ll then have to apply for medical coverage from Unemployment, and that money will likely be a little less than my sick pay.

What I really need is to start feeling better soon so I can get my life back on track. Unfortunately I just don’t seem to be getting any better.

I guess what I really need to do right now – other than get better! – is to find a way to make some money from home.

My husband is a talented musician, he plays 13 instruments. I wish he had chosen a career in music so he could use his talents to his advantage. He choose not to pursue a career in music after touring with a few bands as a teenager. He didn’t like the lifestyle after seeing how it affected some of his band mates, and he thought that his love of playing music would eventually die if he did it professionally. He’s content to play for his own enjoyment, and being the life of the party whenever he choose to play at gatherings. He has started giving guitar lessons though, and I’m hoping that that will bring us a little bit of extra income.

As I sit here worrying about money I’m also thinking I’m pretty good at procrastinating. I was asked to write an article for a magazine two weeks ago. The due date is April 1st. I stand to make some pretty good money if they decide to use the article but I haven’t written it as of yet. I do have all the background and research done. I just have to write it. Tomorrow- I will definitely write it tomorrow!

I’m eagerly awaiting my Google Adsense pin number as well. I’ve finally made enough money on my four websites to enable me to receive a check from Google, but I can’t start the process of getting paid by them until the pin number arrives. I know that I can’t really rely on Google Adsense to bring in much income, but one of my sites has been doing very well, and it’s picking up monthly. I can’t count on it to pay the bills, but hopefully it will bring in some extra spending money.

I’ve been thinking that I could possibly make graphics for people. Banners, or headers for their sites. I’ve made websites for others in the past, and have 10 years experience running my own websites – which includes marketing them and getting them to the top of the search engine listings for their topics. What else? I’ve dabbled at touching up old photographs with great success and have restored a number of ancient pictures for friends. I have a full complement of graphic software including Firefox and Adobe Photoshop to work with. I also have a Wacum tablet which helps me do fine art work on the computer. I think if I put my mind to it I could put all of these skills and resources together and make something of it.

What else can I do to make some money from home while I wait to go back to work? Do you have any ideas for me? I’d love to get some feedback.

Paying Bills

February 13, 2006 by Tricia

Don’t you hate paying bills? I do.

There’s something about parting with that hard earned money in my bank account that I have trouble with. I know, I know – I’m paying for services that I need like heat and electricity, and ones that I want such as cable. It’s just a quirk of mine.

Paying the bills is a bit harder for me these days though. I’ve been off work since the beginning of December due to my possible Crohn’s disease, and while I’ve been receiving sick pay it’s not quite the same amount of money coming in as when I’m working.

Due to my quirk of just plain not enjoying paying bills (does anyone?), and my current financial situation I left it until the last minute to pay the bills this time round. Today was the day, hence my mini-rant.

I approached my desk earlier this evening with a mix of dread and determination. The pile of envelopes was larger than I thought it was. The theme from Jaws was playing in my head. Duhdun duh dun duhdunduhdunduhdun … and somehow I got through the experience without screaming or passing out.

The bills are paid! I’m still alive! Plus there is still a bit of money in the bank … for the next round. It won’t end will it?

How do you pay your bills? Do you wait until the deadline and pay them will dread as I do? Or do you pay them with joy the minute you get them?
