Thirteen Things about Tricia

1…. I hear noises in my house when everyone else is in bed asleep. Sometimes it sounds like music is playing faintly in the distance.

2…. Our house used to be owned in the 1940’s by a man that fixed radios for a living- in the home. We found papers and receipts stuck in the baseboards when we were renovating that led us to this conclusion. Things that make you go hmmm?

3…. I stay up way too late every night (3 a.m. to 6 a.m.) and need to start getting to bed earlier. Maybe that’s why I’m hearing strange sounds in the night?

4…. I love to cook but haven’t done as many home cooked (made from scratch) meals as I like lately. I’ve been cheating with pre-made frozen stir fries, or already made hamburgers.

5…. I’m more than 6 inches taller than my husband. Our wedding pictures look funny. We have one with him standing on a chair to kiss me.

6…. I got sent home from a school 3 day outdoor camping trip when I was 13 because I got caught skinny dipping with a few other students.

7…. I wouldn’t eat cooked veggies when I was a kid no matter how my mother made them, but I would eat a number of them raw. So it wasn’t all that unusual for everyone else to be eating mashed potatoes or boiled turnip (yuck) and green beans, and for me to have each of these items raw on my plate. I still like raw green beans and potatoes.

8…. My parents were in their mid forties when I was born, and my oldest brother is almost 20 years older than I am.

9…. My eyes are Hazel but when I’m tired or have been crying they turn brilliant green, and when I’m feeling ill they have a yellow tinge to them.

10…. I don’t think I have a favorite color – I like several shades of most colors.

11…. My favorite meal is a nice juicy rare steak, but I can’t eat that very often because my tummy doesn’t like it lately.

12…. I’m reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown right now and I’m loving it. I think it might actually be better than the Da Vinci Code.

13…. I’m going to post a grilled vegetable recipe tomorrow that you should come back for and try on the weekend. It’s fantastic. I haven’t had one person tell me that they didn’t like it and most come back for seconds and thirds and …

It’s all out war now

April 26, 2006 by Tricia

War of the Squirrels

War of the Squirrels

Ever since we landscaped our front and backyard 4 years ago we’ve been warring with the squirrels and occasionally other creatures that frequent our yard. This year, for some reason the battle has escalated.

The squirrels have been digging in the yard this year more than ever. It’s been a constant war with them. My husband and I try to run out and scare them away whenever we see them.

I thought I might be safe in the last few days. You see, it was cold and rainy all weekend.

A few birds used our feeders when the rain let up, but I didn’t really see any squirrels, and when I did, they weren’t causing enough trouble for me to go out and run at them. Yesterday wasn’t rainy but it was cool and windy. I had no desire to go outside and the few times I looked out the back I didn’t see any squirrels.

Well, I wasn’t safe. They knew I had let my guard down and they ATTACKED.

Stupid, stupid squirrels! It was a nice day today. The sun was shining, it was warm out and I thought I’d stroll through my garden. What’s this, dug up earth, holes- everywhere! Plants pulled out of the ground, most often bulbs with growth on top. Tulip buds half eaten.

Never has my garden undergone so much damage in just one day. Well at least I think most of the damage was done yesterday and perhaps this morning. I have at least 2000 bulbs in my front and back garden, so when I think about it and realize that only 30 or so plants were trampled, munched on or dug up I suppose that’s not that bad, but I still say this means WAR.

Super Soaker We have a super soaker. We’ve been using it since the end of March or so to scare off birds we don’t like- Pigeons! and of course the squirrels.

When we see an animal in the back yard, eating out of the bird feeders when they shouldn’t (pigeons), jumping from object to object to get to a bird feeder- one is squirrel proof but still gets attacked and then hanging upside down to eat out of the food receptical area which is not all the squirrel proof we open our back door quietly and try to sneak out.

Our back porch is enclosed. That’s where we keep our secret weapon. The super soaker gun is always full. We quietly pick it up and then unlock the back porch door as quietly as possible. Of course this door makes some noise so we have to be ready with the soaker as soon as the door is open far enough for us to pop out. Then we aim and fire!

The pigeons are starting to fly away as soon as they see the gun. The squirrels only run a little bit away from the feeder. So we have to run down the steps and run at them squirting them with the soaker until they high tail it out of our yard. Remember I’m a klutz too so I’m probably risking personal injury when I do this, but it’s so satisfying to see them run like mad.

It’s kind of fun. The stealth and then the Rambo style attack we pull on the squirrels. Our soaker only shoots about 50 to 75 feet, depending upon how full it is. I think we’re ready for one of those big super soaker guns. The kind that hold several liters (a gallon or more) of water, and come with a shoulder strap because they are so heavy. Those ones can really shoot! I want me one of those there guns.

I’m not even going to get started on my hate of pigeons. That all started back when we lived in an apartment and they took over our balcony. That’s a story for another day. I will however mention that our neighbors- ones I haven’t mentioned much as of yet (they are the karaoke neighbors from hell that live on the other side of our semi-detached, more on them later!) – have PET pigeons! They’ve had them for a few years and took care of them well up until this year. Their pigeons never came to our feeders before but now they are there now too! I do not spare them when I aim my super soaker. They are fair game if they are in my yard. Stupid pigeons. Stupid squirrels.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what kind of big ass mother of a super soaker gun we could get? Brand names? reliability? Durability? Not too expensive, though, after all we are mostly only using this to scare off animal pests, but I’m sure we’ll use them to get each other at some point too!

Things that drive me MAD

April 23, 2006 by Tricia

I’m feeling:

Insane

Matt over at Meltwater. Torrents. Meanderings. Delta has a contest going on right now. I think all of the participants might be feeling a little bit like I do today. I’m going nuts trying to figure out his clues. I think I’m close to figuring out “where Matt is” but I’m just not sure. I need at least one more clue. I’ve been to all the participating sites at least 5 times today!

Other things that are bugging me:

1. My border has been working out well, but he’s not following the one house rule that we requested when he asked us if there were any house rules- he’s not cleaning his room. It’s got clothes all over the floor, books and papers scattered everywhere and the bed hasn’t been made since he moved in at the beginning of April. It’s a tiny room and when it’s cluttered it just looks terrible. I see it every time I go upstairs since it’s at the top of the stairs.

2. I’m allergic to the body soap he uses, so I can’t go near the washroom after he’s had a shower. I have asthma attacks when I encounter whatever it is in that soap. We’ve been trying to get him to use the basement shower but he’s only used it twice.

3. My husbands been no help in getting our border to either not use the soap that making it difficult for me to breath, or in getting our border to keep his room at least somewhat tidy. So I’m the BAD guy. I really hate being the bad guy all the time.

4. I have to go shopping for either a dress or a nice pants and blouse combo for the wedding this upcoming weekend. I need new clothes, however, there’s a catch- I hate shopping! If you think that’s weird I also happen to hate long telephone conversations, just so you know, in case you’re keeping track. I know there has to be a few other women out there like me, but I think most enjoy the whole shopping experience. To me it’s very depressing. I’m tall, have a high waist, long legs and clothes just tend not to fit quite right.

5. I also think I might be starting to get a cold. Our border has a bad cold, complete with lots of sniffling snuffling noises that I just adore (see Noises People Make for more info on my reaction to human sounds). I have almost no immune system to speak of so it’s not a big surprise that I might be getting a cold. Actually that’s not true- I have an autoimmune disease so I guess my system is on auto drive. Either way I tend to get sick easily so I try to stay away from sick people. Yeah right- I’m nurse, almost impossible when I’m working. So I’m not happy, my tum is aching a lot, my throat is sore, my nose is a bit stuffy, I’ve got a fever (as usual) and I just feel generally blah.

I guess I’m just grumpy today. My husband is puttering around trying to cut pieces to fit around our inner front door frame. We bought some very nice fluted wood and I think the frame (it’s not a frame but you know what I mean I hope) will look very nice. BUT he cut one piece too short already! Also, every time he’s about to do something he needs my opinion and I’m just not up to it today.

On top of all this Ed from Parenting Toys is leaving me. He’s due to leave sometime late Monday evening but with all my grumpiness he might just pack up his bags and leave in the middle of the night for all I know. Can you guys do me a favor? Pop over to his site and distract him for me so he ends up completing his stay here. Will you do that?

What drives you mad?

Is it a person or something they do that drives you batty? Drivers? Traffic? crowds? Your spouses favorite pet? Inquiring minds want to know- spill it.

Oh My Burning EyeBall!

Attitude

News Shorts … Brrrrr it’s too cold to wear shorts!

My brother came to Toronto for a visit/business trip from Vancouver, B.C. Actually he’s been here twice in the last week. His first visit was a one day trip on Monday so we didn’t get to see him, but this time round he’s here for a few days.

I’ve got 3 brothers and 1 sister. Yeah, I know, 5 of us is a pretty big family these days isn’t it? Three of us live in the Toronto area, one in Ottawa, and of course my visiting brother lives in Vancouver. So it’s tough for us to all get together at one time.

Last night 4 of us, plus spouses and a couple of niece / nephews, managed to get together for dinner and a few drinks afterwords. We had a great little get together and I got a little tipsy from the drinks.

Klutzy too … remember I told you earlier that I’m a big klutz, right? Before the drinks hit me I managed to do my biggest klutz move of the evening. You see, I was eating a very nice dinner- Beef Mango Stir Fry. Very tasty, spicy, mmmmm. I was eating with chopsticks. Somehow … believe me, I don’t know how, honestly, I managed to splash some of the very spice sauce from my meal into my eyeball. Yep, a direct hit!

Nobody noticed at first while I sat there dabbing my eye with a napkin. I slowly started to giggle even though it felt like my eyeball was about to burn out. I was laughing because I was thinking only I could possibly do something this stupid. The more I thought about it the more I laughed (quietly of course) until I had tears streaming down my face.

Naturally laughter is the best medicine and the tears fixed my eye right up.

By this time my family had noticed what was happening and were asking “What did you do? Are you ok” But I know them, and they know me – they are, after all my family, so they were probably really thinking “oh my god, what did she do this time!”

As the drinks hit me, lesser forms of klutziness followed … like almost knocking over glasses or salt and pepper shakers on the table. (several times!)

Speaking of klutz’s did I tell you that I have a box turtle? Well two actually but I’m only going to talk about one of them right now. What does a turtle have to do with being a klutz you ask? No no I didn’t drop him! But if you are thinking that way I guess you are getting to know me better, aren’t ya?

Spaz the box turtle

This is my Eastern Box turtle. His name is Spaz. Now you’re getting it. He is also a Klutz, or in his world, a spaz. He thinks he’s a lizard and tries to climb everything! He climbs onto his hide box and I swear if he could he’d climb right out of his terrarium. Now if he was really good at climbing his name wouldn’t be Spaz. He does alright, but he falls backwards into his soft substrate a lot too. Hence the name.

Since it’s almost spring my turtles are starting to wake up and come out of hibernation. Spaz didn’t want to eat his food today, but around 3 am, as I sat here in the dark on the computer I started hearing rattling noises from the terrarium. I checked and the little devil was at his food bowl munching away. So I guess he had a uhm midnight snack.

Looking

Update: My neighbor Sofie still continues to watch me from her dining room window- daily! She knocked on my door the other day when she didn’t see me sitting in front of the computer as I often do, just to make sure I was ok. LOL If I was actually being klutzy or doing something else that might be considered entertaining I could probably understand her watching me day in and day out. But, I mean, sitting here on the computer can’t be all that fun to watch. I’m not a T.V.. Heck, I’m sure the T.V. would be more interesting for her to watch than me!

It’s kind of creepy.

Well that wasn’t short news was it? Oh well, you got an update. 🙂

What is the most klutzy thing you’ve ever done? Or if you are like me, what is your most recent klutz attack?
