Planning Your Baby’s First Holiday: What Every Mom Should Know

November 14, 2012 by Trish

There is something magical about experiencing any holiday for the first time, and while you can’t exactly go back in time to relive those memories yourself, you can get a new perspective on an old holiday – through your baby’s eyes. It goes without saying that you want to make that moment as special as possible for your little one. So, how do you do that? Here is what every mom should know about planning your baby’s first holiday:

Take plenty of pictures. As you well know, your tiny tot will retain very few clear memories of that first special holiday, so if you want to create memories that truly last, your best bet is to take plenty of photographs, as well as videos. After the holiday passes, put the pictures into a scrap book, or special box, that your little one can open later on.

Be careful of over-scheduling. Sure, you want the entire family to spend time with baby over the holidays, and there’s just so much to see and do during the holiday season. However, it is important that you keep your little one’s routine as close to “normal” as possible, no matter how many activities you have going on. Your baby doesn’t care about holiday festivities when hungry or behind on nap time, so be sure to include plenty of downtime in your holiday schedule.

Plan a get together. It’s hard to get all of your loved ones in the same place at the same time, but there is perhaps no better occasion to make a formal attempt than your baby’s first holiday. Planning a get together can also help you out in terms of not over-scheduling. After all, when everyone gathers together for a set period of time, the need to travel with baby may be greatly diminished.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Before you break out in a cold sweat over whether or not your gift wrap is the perfect shade of crimson, put things into perspective: your baby will not remember all of the minute details. At the very best, your infant will only have a lasting impression (backed up by photos, of course) of what the holiday “felt” like. Therefore, it’s not important to stress over every detail; the most important thing is that you surround your baby with love and warmth.

Your baby’s first holiday is an exciting time, for both you and baby. It’s only natural that you want to make it as special as possible. Follow these tips to plan for that special moment in time.

A weekend to myself

September 8, 2012 by Tricia

As of tomorrow I will become a college student again. Hard to believe but it’s true! Ok, I’m only taking two courses and they are from home, but I am back to school.

I’m taking two distance education courses from George Brown College. They are nursing related courses. Since I’ve been off work on medical leave for some time I’m going to brush up on a few things and then in January I will be returning to my old job at the hospital if all goes well. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully nothing else happens that will hamper my progress such as my hand injury that occurred in June! That certainly put a huge delay on things! I’m still recovering from that. I don’t know if my hand will ever be the same.

I had a busy week last week. I was trying to get a lot of things done so that I could concentrate on starting my courses on Monday. As I said in my last post I was doing a lot of work on a number of my websites, upgrading and updating because I know I’m going to have less time in the near future to work on things. I also did a little research into possible inviting guest bloggers to write for some of my sites. We’ll see how that goes. I haven’t decided if I’m going to go in that direction or not. I certainly get a lot of offers as it is anyway!

Then .. I was also trying to prepare to go away this weekend. My nephew – the hockey player that I told you about earlier in the summer, is now living in Brockville and playing for the Brockville Braves. He’s playing his first professional hockey games this weekend. My husband and mother-in-law – and I, were all going to go to the Ottawa area to see him play this weekend, however I wasn’t feeling all that well by the time Friday rolled around so I nixed the trip for myself.

There was a lot of planning for the trip going on all week too. For quite a while it looked like up to 10 people were going! As in quite a few of my in-laws! I finally heard from my sister-in-law mid-week or so last week and she said that they weren’t going to see our nephew play this weekend and that they were going to go in October instead. It’s better that the family staggers visits. The poor kid is from Chicago and he’s away from home for the first time in his life so seeing family every few weeks might be a good thing.

It was nice talking with my sister-in-law though. I hadn’t talked with her for quite a while. They’d just come home from closing up their cottage. She was saying that their big thing to do this weekend was to go out and look for swimming pool pumps because they’re going to need a new one next summer for the pool at the cottage. I guess they are cheaper at this time of year.

So here I am on my own this weekend. Busy learning how to use the learning module for my online classes and still working on my sites. I am enjoying the peace and quite in the house though – there’s been too much going on this summer, too many people in the house. I like it when I have time to myself.

How is your weekend?

Preparing for House Guests

July 15, 2012 by Tricia

I’m trying to get ready to have house guests again for a couple of days. My brother-in-law and nephew should be here sometime tomorrow and I think they’re staying until at least Tuesday, maybe longer.

The main purpose of the visit is to help with some renovations of our living room and dining room but of course it’s always nice to see family. They were away this weekend because my nephew was trying out for an OHL hockey team – hopefully he made the team. They’ll have to drive back to Chicago, which is where they’re from later this week.

My brother-in-law is a cigar smoker while an occasional cigar smoker. Mostly he smokes cigarettes. I think his latest brand of cigars is Rocky Patel which is one I’ve never heard of before but I guess he he brought it over from the US. Since this is now a non-smoking house he has to go outside and smoke. So far he doesn’t seem to mind that rule. I just hope it’s not pouring rain tomorrow like it has been today otherwise he may not like that very much.

Well, I suppose I should try to relax as the next few days will be quite hectic since we will have visitors and we will be doing renovations. I also have an appointment for another test on my hand. This time it’s a bone scan still trying to figure out what’s wrong with my hand. It’s a little better than it was but it still has a long way to go it seems.

Renovations continue

July 14, 2012 by Tricia

My living room and dining room is starting to look a little bit different thanks to all the work that was done last week. The renovations are no where near complete, but finally, for the first time in literally years, I can see that the room will be finished within weeks.

My brother in law, who came with his son, from Chicago to help us with our renovations had to leave for the weekend, but he’ll be back and we’ll be doing more work next week.

My brother in law and nephew were actually here because my nephew is about to join a Brockville OHL hockey team. He’s an extremely good hockey player and we – and the team owners – think he has a good chance of getting into the NHL .. so being on this team is hopefully the beginning of his professional hockey career. He’s a smart kid though – whether he’s on a hockey team or not he has education goals. He wants to be a doctor and he’s intelligent enough to become one.

I don’t know when my nephew is supposed to officially start with the Brockville hockey team if he joins them, but I know my brother in law and nephew will be back here next week for a few days and then they have to get back to Chicago. I think my brother in law has to drive his daughter to NC for a raleigh nc accounting interview. She’s going to be moving I believe or she’s thinking about it.

I’m in a for a few busy days so I guess I’d better relax while I can. Last week was pretty hectic!

What a great day

July 11, 2012 by Tricia

You know, I just decided I’m having a good day today. So far today things are going pretty well. I can’t say that too often so I’m just going to go with it.

My brother-in-law and nephew came up from Chicago today and are here to help my husband and I do some renovations in the house and so far we’re off to a great start getting things done we’ve wanted to do for many years. I swear our living room, dining room, can be finished in a couple weeks. How many years on this blog have I been saying I was going to start that renovation again? Well, it’s finally happening. Hallelujah.

Then this afternoon I had to go to the hospital to see my hand specialist Dr. and get the results of my MRI and as it turns out the results of my MRI are not bad. It seems that the ligament in my thumb isn’t torn which is good news and we’re not 100% sure what’s happening with my wrist – there still might be something happening with one of the bones. So I will have a special bone scan hopefully in the next week or two and see the doctor again in a few weeks. I might still have a broken bone in there we’re not 100% sure. Either way even though my hand and wrist still hurt quite a bit, it looks like it may be getting a little bit better. I’ve been told I don’t have to wear the splint quite as much, and I’ve been given some exercises I can do to increase mobility and my thumb and wrist and it should also help take some of the swelling down. With any luck my hand might be back to normal within a few weeks. Crossing my fingers on my right hand yay.

let’s see what else is good about today – It’s my brothers birthday, maybe I’ll go celebrate for him? Hey, are you having a good day? Maybe I’ll go buy a lottery ticket. Yeah, that’s what I should do. Then I could invest in some real estate sunset beach and really enjoy myself. Now wouldn’t that be nice?

Okay, time to go and enjoy the rest of this day I hope you’re having a great day too!
