My Living Room and Dining Room Renovation is coming along

August 10, 2012 by Tricia

I can’t wait until our living room and dining room renovations are finished. It’s very slow going.

It seems like every time we get on a roll we find something that sets us back a day or two. For example, today we were starting to put the quarter round on and noticed that in one area the floor must not have been sanded properly when we originally sanded it after taking off the original baseboards and quarter round so the wood floor was raised higher in one area and lower in another. So that resulted in a couple hours of sanding. Now we’ll have to do some staining and polyurethaning before we can resume our work.

At this rate it’s going to be a few more weeks before we have everything done, but I can almost see the finished product. Well I think I’ve had the finished room in my head for years I’ve just been waiting to see it for a long time.

When everything is finished I’m going to rearrange the furniture. I’d also like to either replace the tv stand – which is really nice, but very heavy to move when cleaning, or look at tv mounting brackets and maybe just have the TV mounted on the wall instead of on a stand. I don’t know, I’ll have to see.

My dog still uses her crate and that’s a big eye sore in the living room too. I’d love to either move that to another room or pack it up for storage … but she really likes sleeping in it. I don’t know. I guess that’s another thing I’ll have to think about once the living room dining room renovation is finished.

I’m just happy that the reno is almost done. Yeahhhhhh!

I want and iPad but I don’t need one

December 6, 2011 by Tricia

I keep seeing advertisements for iPads and I can’t help myself – I want one. I’m sure that I really don’t need one. My laptop keeps me busy enough … but oh with the iPad I’d be all the more mobile, it’d be so much more easy to move around and play on the internet. Or so it seems.

Of course, once I start looking online at actual iPads and see the prices and then start adding up all the accessories that I’d probably want to get for it I end up talking myself out of getting one. I mean, just trying to decide between ipad cases alone is mind boggling! LOL

I’m sure I’ll have an iPad or some future version someday, but at this point I just can’t justify the purchase. Of course if I suddenly come into a lot of extra money or something well … maybe …

Do you have an iPad or have you been toying with the idea of getting one?

How do you organize all your wires and accessories for your gadgets?

February 17, 2011 by Tricia

It seems like my husband and I are accumulating more and more gadgets. In the past year I bought a Kindle, and now we have an iPod and then there’s the Flip camera and our other digital cameras.

It’s great to have all of these things, but now I’m trying to figure out what to do with all of the wires and things like the Cell phone accessories and how to keep them organized or simply keep them from getting lost.

For example .. I mainly keep my Kindle in the bedroom beside the bed because I generally only use it to read in bed at night. I also keep the Wifi turned off most of the time to conserve the battery so I only need to charge it about once a month. So I keep the USB wire and charging accessories downstairs on the main floor in a drawer.

Of course that drawer is in my dining room in my Buffet and I really don’t want to keep all the wires and accessories for all of my new gadgets in my china buffet. LOL So … I think this weekend I’ll do a little shopping around for a nice wicker basket or some kind of nice box that I can keep in my living room – handy yet nice enough to look at – where I can store all of the extras for our new and old tech toys.

I’m sure many of you have multiple tech gadgets like cellphones, iPods, digital cameras, camcorders and so on … how do you keep all of the wires, chargers and accessories organized? Or are you always hunting throughout your house for the right wire to charge your gadget?

Trying to set up my brand new laptop

February 16, 2011 by Tricia

Well I mentioned in one of my last posts that I was thinking about getting a new Laptop computer since the one I was using was getting slower and slower – well I broke down and ordered one online a week ago and it arrived on Monday afternoon.

My old laptop is still working, but it’s five years old and the hard drive is small and considering how much work I do with graphics etc it makes sense for me to have a computer with a big hard drive and a fast cpu.

So .. to make things more affordable I bought an Asus Laptop. The new Notebook is an Asus N53JF has a 500 gb hard drive, 4 gb memory, Intel Core i5-460M 2.53GHz, Blu-ray DVD player burner, 15.6″ Full HD display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M graphics.

I know I’ve been saying that we have absolutely no extra money and here I am spending quite a bit of money in the last week on a new computer, a flip camera and even an iPod … but well … the computer is pretty much how I make my money and therefore living these days and the flip camera might fit into that picture too because the videos will help make the blog posts more interesting once we get them going. The iPod … well .. that was just for my husband and I .. a splurge that we’ve been wanting to buy for a long time.

The only other technological gadget that we need to update is our cell phone. The cellphone that we’re using is one that I got for free from a marketing company back in 2006. It works but it’s kind of outdated. I think it’s time I start looking for a new cell phone or as they say in Quebec .. Téléphones cellulaires … soon … but not quite yet.

Ok .. back to figuring out how to get my email settings from my old computer to my new computer …. it’s just not working! Grrrrrr.

We’re very happy with our new TV

February 11, 2010 by Tricia

We finally got our new HDTV on Saturday! So far, we’re very happy with the TV that we had to wait more than three weeks to get.

The new TV is a Samsung 50 inch series 8 plasma HDTV (PN50B850). It’s supposed to be one of the thinnest TV’s on the market right now, and for a plasma, it has one of the brightest pictures.

It took us a couple of hours on Saturday to get the new TV hooked up properly on the new TV stand which has a mount that holds the TV about a foot above the stand. Of course hooking it up to the Home theater system was part of that 2 hour or so set up too.

Once we had it all hooked up correctly we were amazed by the picture! We thought we had a fairly nice TV when we got the Samsung DLP several years ago, but this picture is much much better! Of course the DLP’s light bulb was getting old so the picture might have not been quite as bright as it would have been if it had a new bulb in it.

When I registered the TV at Samsung a tiny message came up when I typed in the serial number. It said the TV was manufactured on January 31st – two weeks after we’d ordered it, so in a way our TV was made just for us! Made to order anyway since it was on back order for a few weeks. LOL

The buzzing problem that this TV model has been notorious for hasn’t reared it’s ugly head as of yet. I had heard that Samsung had a fix for the problem and since our TV was just made hopefully it has the fix built in and we won’t experience that dreaded buzzing problem that I’ve read about so much in various forums and reviews.

We haven’t had a lot of luck with appliances and electronics in the last year or so, i.e. broken washing machine, broken toaster oven, furnace making weird sounds, DLP TV dying and other problems, so we’re hoping that our luck has changed and no problems crop up.

I haven’t played with any of the color levels on the TV yet. It’s just in standard viewing mode for now. Apparently with a Plasma you’re supposed to run it in standard for about 100 hours before you start playing with the settings in order to avoid any burn in problems. Of course this TV has a built in screen wipe that we can turn on if we do notice any burn in that will apparently erase it quickly.

Along with a new home theater system (a Yamaha 6230) we also got one of those high tech remotes (we got a deal!). The new remote was easy to set up. I customized everything by hooking it up to my computer and now all we have to do to watch tv is hit one button on the remote and the TV, home theater and PVR all turn on to the correct settings. This will make it a lot easier when our in-laws or other guests come for a visit. The old remote confused my father in law to no end and all he really had to do was hit separate power buttons for the TV and cable box (PVR) so getting it down to one button should help. I hope!

I’ve spent the last few days watching the new TV while still recovering from that darn cold I got. Geez … I’ve had the cold almost as long as we were waiting for the TV to come in. LOL I’m happy to report that my cold seems to finally be going away. Just a few sniffles now. Now if only I’d stop getting emails for Sacramento homes for sale when I live in Toronto I’d be a happy camper!

Anyone else have a Plasma TV … perhaps even the one we have (a Samsung PN50B850)? Are you happy with it?
