A lovely day for a walk

February 26, 2009 by Tricia

Midnight, my Labrador Retriever, and I took advantage of the nice weather earlier today and took a long long walk.

We were supposed to have a warmer than normal day that was filled with snow, rain and then showers, but to my surprise we didn’t get the bad weather – only the nice warmer than average temperatures. Not that 6 Celsius (42 F) is all that warm, but for February, especially after a very cold January, it sure felt nice … Spring-like even.

Midnight in kitchen

I haven’t been walking Midnight as often as I should since I haven’t been feeling all that well the last several months. Oh, Chris walks her – usually twice a day, but if I can walk her at least once a day as well all the better for her. It makes our evenings much more peaceful if we have a well exercised and tired dog!

For my own sake I should be out walking her every day as well! It’s good exercise and Midnight tends to pull on the leash (although she’s getting a little better and not dragging us around as much lately) so it’s a fast paced walk if I want to keep up with her!

We walked for 45 minutes this afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all took another 35 minute walk.

Midnights still up and begging for a rawhide chew, but I expect that she’ll be tired out and want to sleep soon …

don't bug me I'm sleeping

I took this photo a few weeks ago when Midnight was napping on her favorite chair … I don’t think she liked being woken up to a camera in her face.

So … fellow dog owners, do you walk your dog several times a day or have a yard that your dog can get burn some of it’s excess energy off in?

Exhausting day

June 24, 2008 by Tricia

Well I finally got around to going the family doctor early today for a physical. I’ve been so sick the last two years that she didn’t really insist on giving me an annual physical until now. I mean, at one point I was seeing my doctor about every two weeks! Considering that I was also seeing a number of other specialists regularly at the time it seemed like I was in a doctors office at least twice a week for a while there.

Now normally when I see my family doc I time the appointment for one of the days when my husband doesn’t work until noon so that he can drive me to the docs. I do drive but I don’t drive often anymore because I’m just on too many meds and I don’t feel safe driving with all those drugs on board. Well this week he’s covering someone else’s shift while they are on holidays so I couldn’t work out a ride. So I ended up taking the Subway for the first time in about two years!

The subway is just as bad or perhaps interesting as ever. It was crowded, smelly and stuffy and it took forever to get to the doctors office! I’m used to getting there in 15 minutes but since I decided to take the subway today it took over an hour to get there. Argh. Plus they were doing construction or renovations in one of the buildings near my doctors, maybe putting in CAT6 cables from the looks of it, and I had to go around the area just to get to my docs.

Since I was out so long today the dog was full of energy so when Chris got home from work we decided to take her for a walk together and man that was a workout. She pulls on the leash so hard. She even tired herself out … she’s snoozing on the floor at my feet now.

I’m wiped out now too … maybe I’ll take a nap as well.

Our puppies becoming a real drag

June 3, 2008 by Tricia

Midnight is growing up. It’s hard to believe that she’s just over 9 months old now! She’s been with us for 6 months and it’s amazing how many changes she’s gone through in that time.

Last week we took her to the vet for a heartworm test and to start her on her first prescription of heartworm preventative medications. She’s had needles at the vets before but this was her first blood work. She did well and the heartworm test was negative.

While we were at the vets she got weighed and she’s up to 27.1 kg or 59.7 lb. Considering how sick she was the first two months she was with us I thought she’d probably top out at around this weight, but she’s still got some growing to do, so she might get a little bigger.

Anyway, with her weight up to close to 60 pounds I now know why she’s pretty much pulling Chris and I off our feet when we walk her. You wouldn’t think she’d be strong enough to pretty much drag an adult around, but she’s darn strong! I guess because she’s still quite low to the ground she’s able to pull us off balance.

We’ve tried taking her for walks with just a leash on – way too much pulling, used a gentle leader for a while but that took the hair off her muzzle, tried the Sporn halter for a few months and that worked well up until about a month and a half ago and then now we’re using a Comfort Wrap harness. The comfort wrap is working much better than the Sporn, but walks are still almost unbearable.

It’s gotten to the point that Chris complains that his knees are sore when he comes back from walking her. His shoulder is also sore too. I’m barely walking her these days. In an earlier post I explained that I’ve been dizzy several times over the last couple of weeks. If I’m feeling dizzy or weak or if my stomach is causing me pain the chances of her making me fall when I walk her is even greater. Just letting outside on her leash to do her business is a tug of war too.

It’s not like she hasn’t had any training. I work with her all the time to teach her new commands and tricks, plus she’s been through puppy training and intermediate dog training as well.

Earlier today I took her for a walk to the local corner store. Walking there was ok but she was acting up in the store. The store owner needed to get one of the things I was buying from a back storage area so I decided to continue our walk and then return to the store. Well, on our way back the store owner saw me being dragged around by Midnight. She thought it was funny, but I was exhausted by then! I was also frustrated and angry at Midnight. Crazy hyper Labrador Retriever puppy.

Any suggestions as to how we can get her to stop tugging, or do we just have to wait for her to calm down a bit more? She’s pretty good when she’s indoors, but she gets so excited when she’s outside that she barely listens to our commands.

Midnight’s been acting strange today

April 20, 2008 by Tricia

Poor Midnight.

She had a great day yesterday. Chris and I took her to the park and she ran around and played fetch with us. She also played with other dogs too. Then when I was outside doing a bit of gardening Chris brought her out to watch me work so she was outside a good portion of the day yesterday.

She was even introduced to the hose for the first time when I watered the garden beds after planting some new plants. She kept trying to drink the water as I sprayed the garden.

Today though, I’m not feeling so hot and since I haven’t slept I’m not really even that steady on my feet. So other than Chris taking her out a few times she hasn’t had that exciting a day.

Actually, she had us worried earlier. Chris took her to the park and he met a man with a one year old Chocolate lab and for some reason Chris felt comfortable enough to let Midnight off the leash in the park. That’s something we’d decided we weren’t going to do yet because she’s too young, too excitable and doesn’t always listen when she’s excited.

Apparently she did listen to Chris as she played with the other dog and came back to him when called, but when Chris came home with her she was panting really bad. We’d never heard her pant so hard or for so long. She just kept flopping down on the ground.

We gave her water and a couple of ice cubes in case she was both hot and thirsty, but still she kept panting. She finally seemed a lot better after about 15 minutes but she was really tired out and slept for a while.

Since that time she seems ok, but she keeps looking outside and whining. She can see the park from our front door. She can probably see dogs down there and kids playing on swing sets and I hope that’s the reason she’s whining.

She’s just acting odd.

Poor Midnight.

A lovely spring weekend in the city

white Tulips

Such a dreamy picture of some of the white tulips that I grow in my garden …. It’s the perfect time for a gardener to be dreaming of tulips and other spring flowers too. The weather is finally beginning to warm up and all the plants in my garden are beginning to come out of their dormant state.

I was just saying on my gardening blog that it’s such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I expect to go outside this afternoon and tidy up my garden. Hopefully I don’t become obsessed and stay out there for hours!

We’d also like to take our dog out for a good walk today.

Last weekend we went to Cherry Beach twice (although Sunday was super cold and windy, especially at the beach, so we ended up going to The Brickworks for our walk). It was beautiful! Yesterday we ended up going to The Beach and walking on the boardwalk. So today … if I can pry myself away from the computer and then from the garden, we’d like to go to Cherry beach again.

I just love living in Toronto. The weathers fairly nice most of the year (not this past winter!) and there are so many things to do. I love it. Plus now that we have a dog we have more incentive to get out and enjoy what this great city has to offer.

What have you been doing on this beautiful spring weekend? Working in the garden or doing something outside as you enjoy the great weather?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!
