Now I’ve got the flu?

August 17, 2007 by Tricia

I swear I’m getting sicker and sicker. Now I think I might have the flu or a similar bug.

When I got up yesterday I noticed that the right side of my neck hurt. I thought that maybe I’d just slept in a funny position.

Usually if something like that happens the sore area feels better once you get up and start moving around. Unfortunately the painful area grew and grew. Soon my right shoulder was hurting and I had pain going down my back. After an hour or two the crampy sore muscle pain even went into my right leg and around my right rib cage.

So effectively my whole right side was hurting from the top of my neck to just below my knee.

I was puzzled. I even asked my husband who’s home on holiday if I was sleeping in a weird position or thrashing around. Did I fall out of bed?

On top of all this muscle pain I had a fever. Fevers are pretty common for me but I can usually control them with Tylenol. Yesterday my fever only went down for an hour even though I had 3 extra strength Tylenol spaced out over 12 hours.

So on top of a steadily worsening Crohn’s flare I now seem to be fighting the flu. Or something.

I finally fell asleep on the couch last night at about 2:30 am but I woke up around 4:30 am and I’ve been up ever since. It’s just after 10 am now. I can’t even get a decent sleep anymore. Forget sleeping for eight or even six hours, four in a row would be nice. With this lack of sleep and constant pain it’s no wonder I seem to have picked up a summer bug.

Hiccups and nausea don’t mix!

August 17, 2007 by Tricia

OMG I’ve got the hiccups and they won’t stop! Hiccups really hurt when you’ve got inflamed messed up insides. On top of that I think I’ve got the flu and I’m nauseated.

Have you ever had the hiccups when you’re nauseated?

I don’t believe that I have before so this is a first and I’m not liking it one bit.

I have a feeling that this won’t end well …

All alone

August 15, 2007 by Tricia

Yesterday I was supposed to go to Brantford with my husband to see his family and spend some time with his brother before he goes back to Chicago, but I had yet another bad night and Chris went on his own.

So I’ve been home alone all day yesterday and all night.

That’s ok. I don’t think I make very good company when I’m not feeling well. I spent a good portion of the day lying on the couch mindlessly watching TV. I only do that when I’m really not feeling up to much else and I just hate it.

I’m hoping that I’ll start to feel a bit better this week. Chris took this whole week off work so I’m hoping we can do something fun on our own and maybe get a bit more work done in our garden.

One side effect of my brother in laws visit was that he brought a big bag of Cheetos with him. Now I haven’t had Cheetos for a long time! I love them – they don’t love me, but I love them. So … I’ve been snacking on them here and there.

Hey it’s hard to resist a snack that you like when you haven’t had it for years! LOL

It’s International Left handers Day!

August 13, 2007 by Tricia

Did you know that today, August 13th 2007, is International Left handers Day? Yes I’m a lefty, a southpaw, a port sider, a sinister being and I’m in my right mind and proud of it!

I actually wish I’d been aware of this special day earlier as I would have let all my fellow lefties know.

Many lefties suffer in silence most of their lives living in a right handed world. Today we rejoice!

We often have to become quite ambidextrous in order to survive. I mean, if we use a computer in our work place or in a public library or internet cafe it’s set up for right handed people. Can openers, scissors, gardening equipment such as pruners and so many things are made mainly for right handed people. Sure – in some cases we can get left handed versions, but not always, so we must adapt. Plus buying items that are made only for left handed people can be expensive too.

Throughout school I always had teachers come and try to turn the angle of my paper to a right handed angle (which is to the left). Uh … if you want to read what I wrote on a drastic slant to the left sure … otherwise leave the paper that I turned at a right angle alone!

I also always had ink on the pinky side of my hand when I’d come home from school. Now, as an adult that still happens occasionally, but I use better pens with faster drying ink or perhaps my technique has improved as I don’t have a messy left hand quite as often unless I’ve been writing a lot.

My husband has been pretty good about my being a lefty. The only scissors we have in our home are for lefties and we have can openers, veggie peelers and serrated knives that are sharp on both sides so they are easy for both of us to use. I guess you could say that he probably knows better than some what a left handed person has to go through since our house has a lot of things set up for my ease of use and he’s the one who has to adapt.

I like being a lefty though, even though it hasn’t always been easy.

We’re said to have a tendency to be more creative and I believe that I am a fairly creative person.

There are also quite a few genius lefties – perhaps some lefties are smarter because of all the adaptions we have to make in this right handed world. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this, but I’ve had my IQ tested a few times and it’s in the genius level at 163. (blush). If you want to find out if your a genius you can take this Mensa Quiz for high IQ geniuses. The top of the Mensa Quiz has some interesting facts about lefties and intelligence. Apparently in a test conducted by researchers there were more lefties with IQ’s over 140 (genius level) than right handers.

I also am in quite good company with fellow lefties. Here’s a list of famous left handers. I bet you didn’t know that some of those people were lefties did ya?

Unfortunately lefties also seem to be prone to some disorders that aren’t particularly nice ones such as Crohn’s disease and autoimmune disorders …. hmmm that’s me too. Darn!

How many of my fellow readers are lefties too? I should add a poll thingy to this post to find out. Perhaps I’ll do that later.

Challenge for my Right Handed Readers:

Right handed readers … want to know what it’s like being a lefty? Why don’t you try doing everything that you would normally do with your right hand for just one hour. Try to cut something with a sharp serrated knife (don’t cut yourself please, and notice that most serrated knifes are only serrated on one side! the wrong side for most lefties), try using scissors (don’t get blisters!), open a tin of food, try to write or draw with your left hand and try using your computer mouse with your left hand. Report back to this post as to how you did. I’m curious. I’d also be curious if you lasted the whole hour.

I wonder how long it will take Mr. Fab to come along and say something interesting about my being a lefty.

Ohhhhhh what a weekend!

August 13, 2007 by Tricia

I’m supposed to be in Niagara Falls right now.

Chris’ brother came to visit from Chicago and our house has been full of people since Saturday. Chris’ brother, T, brought his daughter and son, as well as a friend of his daughters so that was four extra people, then Chris’ younger sister came to visit with her husband and their young daughter. Include Chris and I in that total and that makes nine people milling around our tiny home!

On Saturday evening we went to The Taste of the Danforth. Never try going to the most crowded street festival you’ve ever been to with nine people! OMG we spent more time losing the teenagers and looking for them than doing anything else. I was so terribly disappointed since this was my first time going to the taste in three years and it was a disaster.

After we got back from the Taste of the Danforth more people came to our house! A few old friends of Chris and his brother showed up and we sat in the garden and talked, and drank until the wee hours.

On Sunday we were supposed to go to Ontario Place, The beach, a beach club, dinner and then the CN tower. Well … it rained for a good portion of the afternoon so we made it to the Beach Club and sat on the patio under under umbrella’s by the lake. It was actually pleasant even though it was drizzling for at least two hours while we were there. We then ended up going to a nice restaurant in the Beaches called Quigley’s. I had a few of the baby back ribs I ordered (very large portion sizes) and yum, all of the home made very delicious fries that came with my meal. I doggy bagged the remainder of my meal, and so did a few of the others we were with so we have lots of left overs to graze on this evening.

Our plans changed, again, as usual … and we were supposed to do the CN Tower today and Niagara Falls, but I just wasn’t up to it. I’ve been getting sicker and sicker over the last couple of weeks and two days of house guests, staying up late, drinking when I shouldn’t and being more than a little bit over stressed must have made me feel worse because I had a terrible night last night. I don’t know how many times I was up to the bathroom. I felt so ill, nauseated, in pain, fevers, chills … there was no way I was going anywhere today – including the doctors appointment I was supposed to have at ten a.m.!

I’ve spent much of the day lying on the couch groaning in pain. I’ve only just come back to life and it’s already after 7 pm!

I did have fun getting together with our friends and family, but considering how ill I’ve been it was too much for me. Plus I shouldn’t have drank anything! Not that I drank a lot mind you. Two drinks on Saturday and three on Sunday. That’s not too bad, but considering I don’t really drink much anymore that was enough.

I took photos of the crowds at the Taste of the Danforth and some lovely shots while at the beach – including one of my husband when he went swimming. He climbed up on some rocks and mooned everyone! LOL Yeah, I got a snap of that!

I’ll post some of the photos over the next few days.
