In the last 36 hours I’ve spent a LOT of money!

October 4, 2007 by Tricia

Ahhhh!

I was just adding up my receipts and in the last two days I’ve spent a lot of money.

My most expensive purchase was of course my husband and I’s trip to Las Vegas in November. I booked us a hotel room for three nights and paid for return flights. I think I got a fairly good deal at the cost of about $1700. Of course I’d be a whole lot happier if that were several hundred dollars cheaper.

You see, my husband and I are going to the Blogworld convention and also attending P0stieCon. I expect to have a lot of fun meeting bloggers that I’ve only known through talking with them on the Internet, learning how to blog better and how to be more successful at monetizing our sites.

It will also be my husband and I’s first trip to Las Vegas so we’re excited to see the city too. The trip is only two weeks after our 13th wedding anniversary too so if we can we’ll do something special just for us too. (Like win some money at the Casino??? 😉 )

Since we’re going to a blogging convention I figured that if they provide Wi-Fi at the convention I’ll probably have my laptop with me and might even do a bit of live blogging while at some of the conferences. So the next big purchase was a 12 cell battery for my laptop. It came with a 6 cell lithium that has never held it’s charge for more than an hour or hour and a half when unplugged. So I hope the new battery will give me at least 3 or more hours of unplugged time.

I believe they are supposed to last even longer than that, but whether I’m plugged in or not I’ve always got two browsers and my email program open so perhaps that eats up the resources.

Other expenses … well … as you know I’ve been stuck at home sick for almost two years. Many days I don’t even go outside into my lovely garden let alone work in it so I’m terribly out of shape.

I’ve gained a bit of weight due to my inactivity. Nothing too bad as it’s very hard to become drastically overweight when one has Crohn’s, but enough that I can feel it. Also, the lack of exercise has caused me to lose a lot of muscle tone. I can really feel it when I get outside in the garden to do some work or even when Chris and I go out shopping or do other things around town and I must walk around for hours.

My pain doctor is always telling me to get outside and walk each day, but after the two very nasty falls I had last year I’m hesitant to go for much of a walk on my own and with my husbands shift work I can’t always count on him to have the energy or time to go out walking with me. So walking outside is not really in the cards for me right now. My falls were caused by either my innate clumsiness and or the fact that I sometimes get dizzy when I walk around. I’m not walking alone. Sorry.

So the next best thing to help me perhaps loose a little weight over the next month, but most definitely tone up my muscles, was to get some exercise equipment in the house.

So last night when Chris came home from work we went out and I bought one of those exercise balls and and some of the hand held sand weighted balls that go with the ball and pilates type of exercise routines.

I also bought an elliptical trainer. I’m sure my knees will whine when I start using it, but since my muscles are out of shape and due to this darn Crohn’s my knees are already whining.

So I guess I’ve spent about $2,700 or so in the last day and a half. We bought other things last night too and that’s why last nights spending ended up being close to $1000 but the bulk of the money spent in the last 36 hours has all had to do with our upcoming Vegas trip.

Just wait until I go clothes shopping!

Hey, I want to have fun while I’m there and I know getting in a little better shape will give me more stamina and boost my self confidence too. Hey getting my muscles toned up might even lessen some of that klutziness that I was born with too. Gawd only knows I don’t want all my fellow bloggers to see me “Pull a Trish” as my acts of clumsiness are fondly known in these parts.

Oh and I almost forgot. Our muffler. Well the cars manifold had a hole in it for the last year, and Chris only got it half fixed a few months ago. We still had that bad muffler noise. So on Monday he took the car in and had the muffler replaced so add that to our spending spree too! Argh.

So wish me luck in my effort to look and feel a little better for my November trip! Those of you who meet me can let me know if my efforts paid off or not.

Oh and if anyone wants to contribute to the “Trish depleted her bank account fund” well … go right ahead. LOL

Wordless Wednesday

trees at beach

I feel bleak, cold, gray ….

Sorry. I haven’t posted for a few days because I’ve been very sick.

I’ve had fevers high enough to melt the little pads off my mouse (that make it glide easily) when I lie on my side on the couch looking at my laptop computer. Now that’s hot.

Just as I was about to start posting on Tuesday afternoon I looked at the stats for several of my sites and discovered that some very hypocritical elite bloggers had made a post about my gardening blog. My first post after my illness imposed blogging break was a rebuttal on my gardening blog against hypocritical bloggers.

So yes this old picture of trees in early spring that I took at Toronto’s beaches a few years ago reflects how I’m feeling right now.

Sad. Angry. frustrated. Bleak …

I really need to get into shape!

September 28, 2007 by Tricia

You know being stuck at home due to illness can really make you get out of shape fast. I’ve been feeling so awful for the past two months that I really haven’t done much of anything.

When I work in my garden, wow, I really feel it. I don’t think there’s been a time this summer when I’ve worked in the garden and haven’t come in with a sore back.

I need to get back into shape! I’ve lost muscle tone – that’s for sure. Lately I’ve been thinking that I should buy one of those treadmill machines. It’s going to be cold here soon and bad weather will follow. I couldn’t convince myself to get outside as much as I should in the summer so I doubt it will change in the winter time. That’s why I think some form of exercise machine might be in order. Maybe I’ll even try something like muscle milk to speed up the process of getting back into shape. Maybe.

To make matters worse my doctors talking about putting me on prednisone soon. Almost everyone I know that’s been on steroids ends up gaining weight. I’m at a good weight right now, but if I go on steroids I’ll probably bloat up and gain weight. Great. Inactive, out of shape and facing weight gain? Bad news!

Doctors, drugs and pregnancy

September 25, 2007 by Tricia

At the end of August I had an appointment with my pain doctor, but I had to cancel it because I had the flu at the time. I then had to wait two weeks for my rescheduled appointment.

Of course this has thrown my prescriptions all off. When I missed my appointment I was almost due for a new prescription of my pain meds. She doesn’t like to write out prescriptions when medicines aren’t due. I don’t mind that as I used to work in a pain clinic for close to 10 years and I know that people in chronic pain can abuse their drugs and overuse them.

So, when I was due for my meds I had to call my pharmacy who then placed a call to the doctor to get the refill.

Now since my appointments are out of whack I just had to do that again. I’ve only got a few days worth of pain meds left.

I hate having to call the pharmacy to get refills. They are slow, don’t always call the doctor and the whole experience of having to ask a third party for my pain meds kind of makes me feel like a drug abuser.

To top that off, during my last appointment with my pain doctor in mid September we were talking about what would happen if I became pregnant. You guys know we’re trying to get pregnant right? Well that’s not always the best thing when you are on pain meds. None of the meds I’m on will hurt a baby, but the doctor did talk to me about the fact that if I’ve been taking pain meds while pregnant our baby would probably have to go through a mini drug rehab when it’s born.

I’m hoping that’s not the case if I do get pregnant. Many women with Crohn’s end up going into remission when they get pregnant and often feel their best while pregnant. I’m hoping I’m one of those women as I’d be able to get off my pain meds and have a truly healthy baby if that were the case.

Whatever happens if I do get pregnant I think I’ll try to get off the pain meds that I’m on even if I’m still having pain symptoms from the Crohn’s disease. Keep your fingers crossed that the non narcotic pain medication that I got two weeks ago works for me as I’ll be able to start getting off the heavy duty pain meds if it works!

Spirulina sounds like a worthy nutritional supplement

September 21, 2007 by Tricia

As some of my regular readers know, I have Crohn’s disease.

This is a disease that affects the bowels. I won’t go into all the details, but lets just say that inflammation and scaring can develop as a result of the disease as well as many other symptoms. Needless to say this affects how a person with Crohn’s can digest their food. People with Crohn’s often have trouble eating certain types of foods and in some cases, usually during a flare up of the disease, the inability to eat or digest some foods can cause nutritional deficiencies.

As a result of this disease and all the trouble it gives me as far as getting proper nutrients into my system I’m always looking for supplements that might help my condition.

One dietary supplement that I’ve thought about trying is Spirulina. Spirulina is actually a microalgae and it contains a very high amount of protein as well as several important minerals such as calcium, iron and magnesium. If that weren’t enough it’s also full of vitamins.

Taking Spirulina regularly would probably be a good supplement for anyone to take, but certainly for someone like me who needs to boost the amount of nutrients they take in Spirulina seems like it would be a beneficial supplement to take regularly.

If you’re interested in learning more about this wonderful microalgae you should visit the Spirulina For Nutrition page. The page explains in detail exactly what Spirulina is, it’s history of use, how it can be used as a supplement for birds and fish, and it’s health benefits.

The health benefits page lists a number of research studies that have been done with Spriulina in recent years and their findings. Some studies have shown that it might be helpful with inflammatory conditions, diabetes, high cholesterol, and oral cancers, but it’s clear that more studies are warranted before scientists will fully back these results.

I think it’s worth trying. Spirulina can be purchased in capsule, tablet and even powdered form. I’ll probably try the capsules. If I do give it a try I’ll report back a month after starting the Spirulina supplements and let you know if I’ve had any improvements.
