Busy few days – updating website and more

May 24, 2008 by Tricia

Gee I haven’t made a post on this blog for a few day … what’s up with that? I usually post at least one if not two or more posts a day.

Well … to tell you the truth I’ve been pretty busy over the last few days. I’ve been doing a major update on my main website (reptile related info). The site needs a complete redesign, but there were a few issues I couldn’t ignore any longer so I spent the last three days working on updating various aspects of each and every page on the huge site.

I’m a real type A personality and once I start something I usually keep going until I get it done and well, that’s why this blog and most of my others are lacking new posts for the last few days. I think I’m done working on the main website for a while so things should get back to normal now.

Other news … I was right, I am losing weight. I’ve got Crohns and I’ve been on medical leave from my job as an ER nurse for close to two and a half years. During my time with Crohns I’ve gone through periods of massive weight loss. One time I lost close to 40 pounds in one month … weight I really didn’t need to lose! That was bad. I wouldn’t doubt some people thought I was taking handfuls of weight loss pills. Strangely enough, over the last two years that I’ve been home I never did go through a period of weight loss due to the Crohns. Instead I seemed to have gained a little bit of weight very slowly during my medical leave.

Well it seems things are turning around. My metabolism is revving up as I’m constantly hungry and the weight I gained seems to be coming off. I’m not doing anything different really. I’m a little more active now that spring is here, but I still feel pretty yucky so it’s not like I’m going out jogging or anything.

Anyway, I consider this good news – well as long as I don’t start losing weight really fast it’s good news. I’ll be lookin’ good by the time it’s warm enough here to start wearing shorts.

Miserable today

May 13, 2008 by Tricia

I haven’t been feeling well today at all. My Crohn’s is acting up and my stomach has been cramping all day.

Last night I fell asleep on the couch and slept pretty much straight through ’till 6 a.m.. Chris happened to get up in the middle of the night because he couldn’t sleep. I can remember him having a cup of warm milk at about 3 a.m. but as far as I know I just looked at him sleepily and went back to snooze land.

I tried to go back to sleep but I couldn’t. I was in too much pain. However around 2 pm a huge wave of tiredness hit me. Midnight was snoozing on the living room floor so I got her to go into her crate and then I lay down on the couch for a short nap. You know what time I woke up? At almost 7 p.m.!

This type of thing has been happening quite a bit lately. I guess I’ll have to go back to the specialists office and see if he can adjust my medications. I just have to start feeling better.

Laying around so much has actually made me gain a bit of weight. I can’t eat a lot with the Crohn’s, but when you feel so ill that you aren’t all that active you can still gain weight. Luckily it’s not too much. I did once consider trying diet pills, but that’s not the way to go for me. I just want to try to get more active. That’s one of the main reasons we got the puppy in the first place.

I hope that I start to feel better soon. Today is just intolerable. I might just go back to sleep and hope that I wake up feeling better.

Thank you for your condolences

May 5, 2008 by Tricia

Thank you everyone for your condolences. It’s been a tough time for the family losing someone long before we should have. Our cousin’s mother and brother are taking his death particularly hard.

Yesterday as we were driving to Brantford our car started acting up. Figures doesn’t it? We’d driven about 2/3’s of the way there and while on the Hamilton Mountain the car started to sputter. Chris called his father to let him know where we were just in case the car totally broke down and after giving the car a short rest at the side of the road we tried it again and luckily it started up.

After spending some time with Chris’ cousins family we drove back to Toronto with Chris’ brother who came up from Chicago on Friday night. So we had a house guest overnight.

Unfortunately I was really sick yesterday. I was either too hot or shivering with cold. in other words I was having fevers one after the other and my abdomen was causing me horrible pain. I don’t know if it was purely my Crohn’s acting up or if I’m also fighting a bug on top of everything.

Given that I was in such rough shape yesterday Chris and I decided that I’d stay home today. I also didn’t sleep much overnight so I would have been a mess if I’d gotten up early this morning anyway. Chris and his brother took off again for Brantford sometime this morning. I have no idea when they left as when I finally fell asleep early this morning I was out for the count.

So I guess I’m going to miss the visitations today. Depending upon how I’m feeling in a few hours, Chris will either come back home tonight so that we can both go to the funeral in Brantford tomorrow, or else he’ll simply stay over at his parents and go to the funeral without me. It all depends upon how I’m feeling.

I hate to miss the funeral.

The other thing that will decide if I’m going to the funeral or not is our car! Chris’ dad was going to drop it off at a garage in Brantford for us this morning. Hopefully it’s been repaired by now, but if they had to order parts, perhaps ones that might not come in until late today or early tomorrow morning Chris won’t be able to drive back to pick me up for the funeral.

I hope the car is repaired and that it didn’t cost an arm and a leg. We’re a little NSF right now and really don’t need a big car repair expense.

So I guess for now I’ll just be here at home taking care of myself and the puppy as I wait to see whether I’m feeling well enough to travel tomorrow and if our car is repaired or not too.

I’m seriously sleep deprived

May 1, 2008 by Tricia

I swear I’ve got a sleeping disorder. Over the last several months it’s very common for me to only sleep for an hour of so and then get up again. When that happens I end up not returning to bed for hours and then I only sleep for an hour or two at that time.

In other words I’ve been living on only one to four hours sleep most days for maybe the last two years.

I’ve always been a late night person. Not falling to sleep until about 2 a.m. has been my common habit for most of my life. No matter if I had to get up at 5 a.m. for a nursing shift or if I could sleep in. I’ve also never been a morning person. I’m groggy if I get up before 9 a.m., or well … that’s the way it used to be when I’d at least sleep for several hours at a time.

I think my sleeping problems started when I began working in the ER at the hospital in 2002. I’ve been a nurse since 1992, but in those first 10 years on the job I’d never had to do a night shift. Suddenly I was expected to do at least two night shifts per week … and not just an 8 hour night shift. No … a 12 hour night shift.

My night shifts were always at the end of my run of shifts and it would take ALL of my days off for me to get back to a normal sleep at night schedule. Just in time for those early morning shifts at the beginning of my run of shifts.

Then of course in mid-2005 my Crohn’s really started acting up and by the end of the year I was off work on medical leave (and still am since my Crohn’s hasn’t settled down at all).

While I’ve been off work I’ve kept myself busy on the computer. Writing blogs and starting more blogs and websites. Hey it’s been not only a way to pass the time but a way to earn the income I’m not making by working full time as a nurse.

I’d stay up later and later because my pain is always worse from evening onward into the night. So pain is a factor in my not sleeping well and or putting me off a normal sleep schedule. However filling my time by being on the computer working on my sites just keeps my mind active and as a result I don’t settle down to sleep at a decent time – or at all most of the time these last few weeks.

Of course now it seems to be getting worse.

I did go to a sleep clinic a couple of years ago. I knew I had a sleep problem. They put my light sleep down to my pain. Of course my time in the sleep clinic was a horrible mess as they tried to make me go to bed early and since I was in pain and couldn’t even take my mind off of it by reading for a while I simply didn’t sleep for hours. I finally slept at the clinic for about half an hour!

I think it’s time I talk with my doctor about my sleep problems again and maybe (shudder) go back to the sleep clinic again.

In the meantime I think I’ll try to turn the computer off my midnight at the latest and see if that helps my mind slow down and helps me get to sleep.

At this point I feel so sleep deprived that I’m sometimes not sure that I’m making sense. Sad eh?

Do you have trouble sleeping? Or have you had trouble sleeping in the past? What helps you get to sleep?

I know where rainbows end up

April 4, 2008 by Tricia

Just imagine if there really was a lot full of used rainbows. LOL Wouldn’t that be cool!

This week I’ve been spending my days trying to update my sites. Yes I’m still working on getting a few sites upgraded to WP 2.33 and then once that’s done I guess I’ll do it all over again for WP 2.5! Some of my sites have really old themes so I’m replacing the theme and widgetizing those sites. It’s slow and tedious work. Sometimes I think I’d rather be looking for Branson real estate or a great holiday deal than staring at my computer and tinkering with code!

Oh and I still have the flu or some kind of bug or maybe the flu that I had earlier this week bothered my Crohns … something’s still going on. I just feel yucky and feverish. Hopefully I’ll be back to as normal as I get soon!
