Yet another sleepless night and day

October 2, 2008 by Tricia

Yesterday I was in a daze. I didn’t sleep all night. I only fell asleep at about 7:30 in the morning when my husband was getting up to go to work and he accidentally woke me up when he was leaving for work at 9:30.

I couldn’t get back to sleep at all. My stomach was crampy from the Crohn’s disease. So no matter how much I tried to sleep I just couldn’t. I ended up being in a fog most of the day and then at about 5 pm I started to get a bad headache. By 7 it was a migraine.

There was no way that I could write any posts on my blogs yesterday. They would have been gibberish.

I don’t know how I did it, but I didn’t fall asleep until 2:30 this morning. I guess when you’re overtired you just keep going, even if your brain is aching and not functioning well. LOL I think I finally fell asleep during an infomercial for exposed acne treatment or something like that.

The good news is that once I finally fell asleep I slept until about 9 am, and then I managed to fall asleep again until about noon today. I felt so much better after that long sleep.

I don’t sleep much and my sleep habits have gotten a lot worse over the last two years or so since I’ve been off on medical leave. Four to six hours of sleep is about my average per night so getting nine or more hours of sleep in one day is the equivalent of two days sleep for me. No wonder I feel so much better today, eh?

Do you ever have days like that where you haven’t slept or you’ve only had an hour or two’s sleep?

Tomorrow night is FEAST night

September 19, 2008 by Tricia

Tomorrow evening we’re going to be going out of town to celebrate our brother-in-laws birthday. We’ll be going to an old friends of ours’ home to have a feast.

Our friend, J, loves to cook. Whenever she has these parties (and believe me, she’ll use any excuse to have a dinner party) the meals are always HUGE. Like 8 to 10 courses and three to five desserts! If she invites 10 people to her dinner party there’s enough food to serve 50!

Oh and it’s not light fair. It’s full of fats, sugars and all the bad stuff. It’s usually delicious, but I’m sure if we were to attend her dinner parties regularly we’d soon have clogged arteries!

We have one major problem though. Since this dinner party is out of town we normally stay over at Chris’ parents whenever J has a party. Too much food and too much drink isn’t a good mix for a two hour drive home!

We can’t bring our dog! J hates, hates, hates … did I say hate? Yeah, she hates dogs. So there’s no way we could bring Midnight with us. Plus … Chris’ parents have been invited to the dinner party as well, so they won’t be able to take care of our puppy either. Midnight’s so hyperactive anyway, I wouldn’t saddle them with her, she’d probably end up knocking one of them over or dragging them own the street. She certainly drags me around!

On top of all of that, Chris’ sister and our brother-in-law will be moving in October, so they’ve asked if Chris could come over and help with a few things around their house to help prepare them for the big move. So … Chris is going to drive to Waterloo this evening, help our brother-in-law with a few things and then drive back to Toronto tomorrow morning … well, I know him … he probably won’t get back until early afternoon.

I’ll stay home and take care of the dog while Chris is gone.

Then, sometime late tomorrow afternoon we’ll drive to Paris for the dinner party … but we can’t party too hard as we’ll be leaving Midnight at home alone (in her crate) and we’ll have to drive home sometime after the big FEAST is over.

Don’t count on any new posts on Sunday … There’s a good chance I might be a little hung over and or my tummy might be upset by all that food. Most of J’s dinner menus usually don’t go well with my Crohn’s and she’s the type of person that doesn’t seem to understand if you beg off eating something she’s cooked (simply because you can’t digest it!). LOL So I guess I’ll be eating a variety of tasty food, but probably paying for what I ate on Sunday and who knows … maybe well into next week if it irritates my already irritated Crohn’s affected system. Ugh …. (don’t worry I won’t be too stupid about what I eat.)

So I guess I’m going to try to do a day or two’s worth of posts this evening! Hope my fingers don’t cramp up with all the typing!

What are your plans for the weekend? Any dinner parties or family trips planned?

BTW I haven’t been to one of J’s parties for a while (Chris has, but I haven’t). The last one I went to was in the summer of 2006. Long time readers of this blog might remember that that’s when I tripped and fell on a weirdly shaped curb and tore a tendon in my knee (took 8 or more months to heal and hasn’t been the same since). Luckily for me that was my last most spectacular klutzy move. I haven’t done anything nearly as self-injury causing since that time. Let’s hope that if I go tomorrow night I don’t trip and fall or klutz out in any way!

What a party pooper

September 6, 2008 by Tricia

My body is playing a big joke on me right now and it’s not funny.

Seriously …

It’s my birthday and I woke up with a headache this morning. No not from partying last night, unfortunately. I don’t know what caused it, probably the stress I’ve been under as it’s been a bad week. Anyway … the headache has turned into a major migraine.

Forget doing anything nice like going out to dinner or getting together with friends to celebrate my special day. Nope … I’m lying down trying to make my head stop pounding.

I feel awful most of the time thanks to Crohn’s Disease. You’d think my body would at least cooperate on my birthday? Nope.

Oh well, maybe next year.

Hmmm maybe I’ll get Chris to give me a neck massage. That might help.

Thanks to everyone who’s been stopping by my Facebook page to say Happy Birthday. I really appreciate your messages.

Can’t I just be normal for one day?

August 11, 2008 by Tricia

Back in June I had a week or two where I was dizzy all the time. It happened mostly when I’d stand up from a lying or sitting position but sometimes I was dizzy even when I was lying down. I spoke with my doctor about it at the time (the pain doc) and she thought the dizziness might have been caused by a pinched nerve in my neck since the muscles on one side were really tight.

Well the dizziness is back again and I’m not convinced it’s coming from my neck. I’m thinking that it’s probably low blood pressure. When I was a teen I would get really dizzy every morning when I’d get out of bed. It didn’t help that I’d literally jump out of bed when my mom or dad would call me from downstairs to wake up and come and get breakfast. I’d jump up right into a standing position and promptly fall flat on my face! You’d think I’d learn to take it easy getting up after the first few falls, but it took a long time to learn to sit up slowly and then get up. Stupid teenager!

Good ol orthostatic hypotension!

Seeing as I’m a nurse I happen to have my own stethoscope and blood pressure monitor so I think I’m going to take my blood pressure a few times this week. Maybe even a few times a day – perhaps when I’m just sitting and then again if I stand up and feel dizzy. That will help answer whether it’s low blood pressure causing my dizziness or not.

Do you ever get dizzy for no apparent reason?

My dizziness might also be caused by my Crohn’s disease. I’m not sure how … but my Crohn’s has been acting up quite a bit lately so this might just be one more symptom to go along with the fevers, abdo pain and other nastier symptoms.

I hate being sick. I’d love just to have one day where I actually felt ok.

Hump day – how’s your week going so far?

July 23, 2008 by Tricia

It’s already the middle of the week and I feel like I haven’t managed to get anything done yet!

I always seem to feel terrible with my Crohn’s but the past two or three weeks have been really bad and it just seems to be getting worse. The minute I wake up I’m in pain and sometimes the pain in my abdomen even wakes me from a deep sleep. All day every day I’m in pain. It dies down a little now and then, but then it seems to come back with a vengeance.

The fevers have been really bad lately too. It seems that when the pain is at it’s worst I usually don’t have a fever, but then once the pain dies down a bit the fever perks up and of course the fevers leave me feeling washed out and shaky – shivering or too warm depending whether the fever is starting or beginning to go away. I think I’m starting to get an idea of what menopause must be like for some women. BTW the fevers and chills I’ve been experiencing are definitely not menopause. I’m too young for it and it’s been ruled out by a few doctors … it’s just a multitude of low grade fevers each day caused by the Crohn’s – yet another lovely symptom. I probably have an abscess somewhere in my abdomen although they haven’t been able to find it yet (they have searched! believe me they’ve searched!).

I seem to finally be in a mood to write, so I’m just going with it. Actually we’ve had a lot of weird weather here this past week and we’re expecting severe thunder storms so I’m trying to get as much writing done as I can before the storm starts just in case the power goes out yet again.

On Sunday we started having power failures. It began at 3 in the morning for an hour and then we had three more power failures throughout Sunday morning. Then on Monday we had a two hour outage in the morning. Nothing to do with storms.

I still don’t know why we had so many power failures. I know there was a fire in the area Saturday night and on Sunday morning a huge transformer under an apartment building (a fair distance away from where I live) exploded leaving 900 apartment dwellers homeless … but I don’t think either of those things would affect the power in my immediate area.

Yesterday a big truck knocked down the power line that goes over the street just a few houses away from us, surprisingly not causing a power failure in our home. However it did cause the street to be blocked up by police and hydro trucks for a while. One of our neighbors was moving out of her house at the same time so there was a big uHaul and an American Van Lines truck taking up our whole side of the street. This was at the same time that the Power people and the police were blocking off part of the traffic on the street so it was a mad house around here!

Well I guess for a sickie I’ve had a lot of things going on in my immediate neighborhood to keep me occupied. Life is never boring around here and I’m thankful for that!

So how has your week been going? Are you glad the week is half over or are you just cruising through without a care?
