More doctors, new meds and Thyroid nodules

April 1, 2009 by Tricia

What an exhausting day!

I had an appointment with a new doctor this afternoon. An Internist. My family doc had suggested I see him over a year ago but delayed referring me until recently. Uh huh … she’s become a dud in the last year or so.

Anyway, I went to see the new doctor, the Internal medicine guy, just to get another set of eyeballs on my Crohn’s case. Nothing has been helping ease my pain and symptoms in the last four years, so as long as I don’t end up having to go through all the tests like yet another colonoscopy, gastroscopy and other tests I’m fine with seeing if this new doctor can help me.

After discussing my medical history and recent symptoms he decided to try me on a different Crohn’s drug. I’m to try it for two weeks and see if I feel any better on the new meds. Of course I probably won’t be able to fill the prescription until the weekend as we go to Costco to fill our scripts these days- it’s cheaper!

I hope this works.

I’m tired though … it’s exhausting seeing a new doc when you have Chronic health problems.

Plus … last week I thought my throat looked a little puffy so when I went to see my pain doctor I had her take a look at my neck and she sent me for an ultrasound. Just as I thought, the right side of my thyroid (the only part of the thyroid I have left since I had the left side removed 19 years ago when I had a tumor with pre-cancerous cells in it!) has lots of solid thyroid nodules in it.

I just got that news yesterday so that’s been worrying me too. I mean, since the last thyroid growths I had had precancerous cells and resulted in surgery I have a feeling that these ones will be precancerous or perhaps even have developed into cancer since my family doc hasn’t been keeping an eye on my thyroid function over the last several years – so I’ll probably end up having surgery to have the rest of my thyroid removed soon too. Biopsies first though …

So now I’m waiting for my family doctor to call me. My pain doctors office, the one who sent me for the thyroid ultrasound, called me yesterday with the results (solid nodules, one more dominant than the others) and said they were faxing the info to my family doctor that day … so why haven’t I heard from my family doctor today? I know she works everyday, but Monday … Grrr … I just want to get started, as in get a referral to an Endocrinologist, and find out how serious these new growths are. Not to mention that I shouldn’t have had new growths since I’ve been on Thyroid replacement therapy for almost 20 years!

The only good news that happened so far today (well other than trying a new medication) is that there was a message on my phone saying that we won a free hotel stay. LOL I’ll have to see if that’s for real or not, but a little good news is nice.

I hope that you had a better and healthier day than I did!

Darn – I think I might be getting the flu now

February 10, 2009 by Tricia

I’m grumpy and not feeling well again today. I know … I’m always not feeling well (thanks Crohns), but it just seems like the past few weeks have been worse than normal.

I’m actually starting to wonder if I might be getting the flu or something. Last week I had a few days that I had sneezing sessions – like 5 to 10 sneezes in a row. Now that leaves you feeling weird, even if it does kind of clear your head!

The sneezes seem to have stopped, but yesterday and today I’ve had really bad stomach cramps – worse and different from normal. Plus I’ve been nauseated as well. Yes I do occasionally get slightly nauseated with the Crohn’s, but this is worse than normal. At 5 a.m. I really thought I was going to have to run to the bathroom because I felt so bad.

So it’s either the flu or my Crohn’s is worse than ever. Oh and when I do get the flu or a cold it seems to drag on forever, probably because the Crohn’s has my immune system in high gear so it’s fighting the germs but very slowly losing the battle. I’d rather have 24 hour flu’s and 48 hour colds like I used to! Either way I’m not doing much. I run a number of blogs and I must say between my husband being sick and my not feeling well my blogs have been badly ignored.

What have been doing is simply lying on the couch watching TV. Unfortunately a lot of the shows that I normally watch have been running re-runs lately or have been canceled due to those darn award shows. During the day I watch a few channels that play old sitcoms. Trouble is that I’ve seen some of the shows oh … maybe 50 times in my lifetime! LOL Oh and the commercials! One station puts on a commercial for technical colleges and schools at every commercial break. Ahhhh … don’t they have any other advertisers?

Anyway I’m sorry that I haven’t been writing as much lately and that when I have it’s been either about my or my husbands health. At least blogging about these things seems to help get it off my chest.

Oh … Chris went back to work today. He should be home soon. It looks like his day was going well, at least from the time he called me this afternoon to check in. Hopefully he won’t have any more chest pains or dizzy spells. I’d hate to get another phone call that he’s been admitted to the hospital again.

Chris is home from the hospital and feeling better!

February 8, 2009 by Tricia

It feels like forever since I last made a post in this or any of my other blogs! In fact I think this is the longest absence I’ve had on this blog!

Well if you read the last post you’ll know why! Chris was admitted to the hospital with chest pains or rather a strong pressure feeling in his left chest and dizziness last Friday and he was in the hospital until early Monday evening. He had to wait until Monday before they could do the angiogram to make sure that his coronary arteries were clear (they were!), and then he was discharged on Monday evening to recover at home from the angiogram. He was also sent home with a prescription for cholesterol lowering medication (Crestor) since his good and bad cholesterol was sky high and his triglycerides almost non-existent.

So at this point he’s fine. They couldn’t find anything wrong with his heart, but he still has those symptoms (not now, but every now and then) and a permanently changed electrocardiogram reading that makes it look like he has that rare heart arrhythmia called Brugada.

We have to set up some out patient tests – like a 48 hour Holter monitor (like a 2 day constant ECG) and a stress test as well as followups with two doctors. Otherwise he’s all recovered from the angiogram and the needle in his groin and he’ll be going back to work on Tuesday.

One neat thing that happened or that might have happened this weekend … apparently there’s a big cardiology conference here in Toronto this weekend and one of the two doctors that discovered the rare heart arrhythmia, Brugada, that Chris might have (but tests can’t prove) are apparently attending the conference. So the cardiologist that first saw Chris on Friday when he was admitted asked Chris if he could discuss Chris’ case with Dr. Brugada himself at the conference. I presume he’ll also be taking Chris’ ecg as that is the biggest indicator that Chris might have this rare arrhythmia. Isn’t that cool? The discoverer of Chris possible heart problem might look at Chris’ case?

So I guess we’ll know sometime early this week what Dr. Brugada thinks of Chris’ ecg and symptoms. If he does think that Chris might have Brugada then Chris will have to have a pacemaker defibrillator installed which will shock him and get his heart going again if it suddenly stops due to this rare arrhythmia. Not a great thing, but I’d rather Chris have something that could save his life than living in the unknown and possibly losing him suddenly. That’s stressful!

As for me … well, Chris’ illness took a toll on my health as well. The hospital’s close by and within walking distance so I was trekking back and forth for four days bringing Chris things like my Laptop, dvds to watch on the computer, his big heavy pillow from our bed, clothes, toiletries, reading materials etc … and well of course my Crohn’s got worse, and so did my back. My back’s been bad for most of the last year and walking a block or two sets off spasms. I seriously think my vitamin D deficiency has weakened my bones and that’s why my back is getting worse and worse – the top of my left thigh – to below my knee is now numb (since Monday or so) as well, so something is pinching a nerve.

Plus I seem to have hurt my wrist last week – how I don’t know – maybe playing with the dog, so my wrist has been aching enough for the last week and a half that I’ve even wondered if it was broken! Hopefully it’s just a muscle or tendon that’s been pulled, but if this keeps up I’ll get it checked out this week -as well as getting a back xray!

So basically, Chris came home from the hospital on Monday evening feeling pretty good – well his groin and right leg hurt a lot due to the angiogram, but it’s better now … and I came home a mess! I was exhausted, had abdominal pains from the Crohns plus fevers, back pain and wrist pain … you name it. It took until about yesterday for me to start feeling somewhat better. That’s the main reason I haven’t written all week! Just feeling too crappy, plus the wrist makes it harder to type.

Ha, between Chris and I we’re a sad tale. LOL God forbid we start looking for life insurance quotes or anything like that. I’m sure the companies would just laugh at us right now.

I certainly hope that you have all had a better week than Chris and I have. I also hope that those of you who are getting some unseasonably warm weather (north east) are enjoying watching the snow melt away. We certainly are … although Midnight, our Lab, who likes to pee in snow banks is finding it strange.

Speaking of Midnight – the stress of the last week took a toll on her too. Between having three people she’s not used to in the house (the in-laws and Chris’ aunt) and the excitement that goes along with that, being in her crate for longer than normal while I was away visiting Chris in the hospital and of course missing Chris it threw her off. By Sunday she was barely eating her food (and she’s a Lab – they live to eat!). It took her until Thursday or so to start eating mostly normally again. She’s still being a little picky, but she’s pretty much back to normal. I guess she didn’t like all the changes and stress anymore than I did. I’m glad she’s pretty much acting like her old self as I was beginning to wonder is she too might be sick.

Also, thanks to everyone who left kind messages in my last post wishing Chris well. We really appreciated each and every comment. Thank you.

I’d love to get away for some sun

January 23, 2009 by Tricia

Every year around this time I start to long for a holiday in the sun. I think this year more than ever!

One reason why I’d love to get away for a week or two of sun is because of my Vitamin D deficiency. It’s really bad and as I’ve said before it’s made my muscles extremely weak. Living in Canada we don’t get any health benefits from the sun (like the ability to natural make Vitamin D in our skin from sun exposure) from Mid October until about Mid March.

So you can see where I’m going here right? If I went off to some sunny location and spent some time getting “sun therapy” it might help my Vitamin D deficiency right? Pretty smart huh?

Ok well I am taking Vitamin D supplements but considering I have Crohn’s which causes digestion and malabsorption problems it’s going to take a LONG time for those supplements to work.

It’s a pipe dream at any rate. Chris and I can’t afford a holiday right now – even if was just for me … no matter how much I’d love to pack my luggage tonight and catch a flight tomorrow.

Hmmm maybe I should do some research on Tanning beds and see if they can help with Vitamin D deficiency … that might be more affordable.

Hopefully getting back to blogging

January 22, 2009 by Tricia

I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting much in the last week and a half or so. I’ve been very sick again.

I was actually in the hospital last week for a few days. My Crohn’s really flared up so I had to be treated in the hospital and stay there for observation for a while. God I hate being sick.

I haven’t been doing much since I got home. Just resting and slowly getting a bit better.

While I was away from home our closest neighbors- the ones on the other side of our semi-detached house had their baby! I didn’t even know she was so close to her delivery date. They had a little girl. I haven’t met her yet, but I did hear her cry once. I’m sure we’ll hear the baby more when she gets a little bigger and has stronger lungs for those cries!

Our other new neighbors – on the other side of our house – seem to be stocking up on cat supplies! Earlier today I saw the “boyfriend” going in and out of the house with Cat litter bags! They told us when they moved in that they have two cats, but with the amount of cat liter they brought in earlier today they either have a houseful of cats or they got a deal on the stuff! LOL

Hopefully I’ll feel well enough to get back to regular blogging soon. In the meantime I’m going to watch some of the shows we’ve been taping on our PVR .. I’m looking forward to seeing CSI and Ugly Betty tonight.

I hope you’ve had a better week than me!
