Losing some weight

January 12, 2008 by Tricia

Well it looks like I won’t have to go on a formal diet or a diet plan like slimquick after all. Ever since we got our puppy in November my activity level has gone way up!

I’d gained a bit of weight due to being on prednisone and because I’ve been in so much pain over the last two years that I just haven’t been very active at all. Actually as time went on I became less and less active. You might have called me a couch potato.

Just to show you how inactive I must have become … When we’d only had our puppy, who’s very very active, for three weeks I went to see my pain doctor. I think that was December 15th or so. She weighs me every time I see her much to my dismay! Even if I hadn’t been gain weight I’d still have hated being weighed every visit. Well I was pleased to see that I’d lost 10lb according to her scale.

We’ve had our puppy for just under two months now and I’ve lost 25 lb. It won’t take much longer for me to be back in shape!

One of the reasons we got the puppy was to keep me company and to get me a little more motivated to exercise. I’d wanted to get more active but when you are always in pain it’s very hard to will yourself to go out for a walk or even to go out in the garden to look at your flowers let alone work in the garden. However, when you have a dog, especially a puppy, you must get moving. Puppies need to go outside about ten times a day when they are young. Of course now that Midnight is 4.5 months old and has some bladder control she’s not going out that often anymore, but we are talking longer walks. It’s good for both of us.

If you have a young pet at home did you notice that you lost a bit of weight or started to get in better shape as a result of all the extra walks you were doing?

I’m definitely sick again

December 10, 2007 by Tricia

I’m sick again. The dog has really upped my activity level and worrying about her being sick has increased my stress level and the combination has really got my Crohn’s going.

I didn’t sleep much on Friday night because the puppy was uncomfortable and having accidents. Finally around 7 PM on Saturday I fell into a deep sleep and I slept on and off through the night until the puppy woke us up at 6 am after having yet another accident.

I went back to bed at about 9 am in a lot of pain. My whole lower abdomen was just aching. I woke the same way at about 2 pm and I’ve been in terrible pain ever since. My pain meds are doing nothing other than making me a bit dopey. They aren’t even touching the pain at all.

Luckily Chris has Monday off work. He usually has Tuesday off … but I’m very thankful that he’ll be home. He’s helped a lot with the puppy care over the weekend and if I’m still feeling this bad on Monday it will be good to have him around to help out.

Putting aside my hopes of travel

December 6, 2007 by Tricia

I was hoping now that I got Chris to go on a trip, and since he did ok with flying this time, that we’d be able to start traveling more.

Then we got a puppy.

I can’t seem to get much of anything done now that we have this energetic ball of fur running around!

I’m so tired and my Crohns is starting to act up bad – probably from the lack of sleep and increased activity.

Well, I guess we can still go on trips to places that we can drive to at least.

I had been hoping to get out to Vancouver sometime in the New Year – perhaps in the Spring or early Summer, but driving there takes four or five days so we’d have to take at least three weeks to make a proper trip of it. Might as well plan on going to one of those Hawaii bed and breakfast. It’s just not going to happen right now.

The puppy won’t even be a year old until the end of August and that seems like forever to me right now. The way she chews things and goes into what I call parana mode (all mouth!) I don’t think we’d even bother to ask any of our friends to look after her until she calms down some.

Do I sound like a new mom or what?

Starting to feel a bit more like myself

November 15, 2007 by Tricia

I think I might be starting to feel a bit better. Well I thought I was a bit better for most of the day, but I’m in pain now. Hopefully the pain is mainly from not really eating. If that’s the case I’ll be rectifying that situation shortly!

I didn’t sleep at all yesterday. I was up puttering around on the computer and I was in pain. Crohn’s hurts folks!

Finally around 6 pm I was so exhausted I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up at about 10 pm and had a late dinner while watching a bit of TV with my husband but by a little after midnight I was asleep again and I slept until about 9:45 am.

Perhaps all that sleep is why I was feeling a bit better for most of the day. I’m sure I needed it!

I’m getting back in the groove. I wrote a number of posts on my Gardening blog, put up some new pictures that will be posted over the next few days on my photoblog and I’m slowly working my way through each blog that I write in to make sure it’s got at least one new post.

When I’m short on time or not feeling that well I find it’s my celebrity and tech blogs that go the longest without fresh posts. You know I enjoy talking tech stuff – widgets, blog design, plugins and so on … but for some reason I don’t get to those sites to talk about that stuff as much as I should.

For those of you with multiple blogs do you find that one or two lack your attention when you get busy with life or other things?

It’s been an interesting week

November 8, 2007 by Tricia

As many of you know I’m going to Las Vegas tomorrow to attend both the Blogworld blogging convention and P0stiecon.

Well … I’ve been busy preparing for my trip. I haven’t been on a flight since oh … 1998! Almost a decade! I have been out of the country more recently, but not on a plane.

I’m a little nervous. Nervous for several reasons actually.

You see, when I was about 21 I had my tonsils out. Prior to this I loved flying, but post tonsillectomy …. well lets just say something must go seriously wrong because my ears get blocked up and my ear drums have almost burst a few times while flying. So I’ll be dosing up with my allergy meds, decongestants and I’ll constantly have a candy or a wad of gum in my mouth to help me keep swallowing to clear the pressure in my ears. The pain, as I remember it, is excruciating. I have been taking allergy meds regularly all week so hopefully that helps this time round.

If I make it with ears intact I’ll still have all those meds on board which frankly make me feel hyper (I’m already kind of hyper) and high so it will take all of Thursday evening to come down off those meds!

Then there’s the fact that my husband is afraid of flying. We got him some Valium and Ativan for the trip so he can take the edge off, but still, I’m sure he’ll be a bit panicky and if I’m having really bad ear pain I’m sure we’ll be quite the couple to sit near on the flight.

Anyone from Toronto going to these conventions? I’ve just told you a sure way to figure out who we are if you’re on our plane!

So that covers the plane ride … but once I’m there I still have a reason to be a bit nervous. You see, I’m going to be on one of the P0stiecon discussion panels and I’m actually a shy person so I probably won’t really feel all that comfortable or relaxed until I get that over with on Saturday morning!

On top of my worries I’ve also been sick. Very sick. As you probably already know I’ve got Crohn’s disease. Well, it’s been acting up very badly this past week. Maybe my nerves over the whole trip is making it worse. I don’t know. Either way I’m still sick.

I actually spent almost two days in the hospital at the beginning of the week. That’s another reason why there haven’t been many posts on my sites this week. I used my laptop a bit while in the hospital, but I just didn’t feel up to it.

I had a bowel obstruction.

That’s why I was feeling so bad on Sunday night with pain and nausea that just wouldn’t go away. It was terrible. I’ve had bowel obstructions with this disease before and none are pleasant but I’ve been lucky and it’s been perhaps 10 months or more since I last had an obstruction that I know of and this one took me by surprise.

It’s resolving, but I probably really shouldn’t be going to Vegas now … yet, unless I get worse over night I’ll be on that plane. I’m so glad I took out insurance!

I’ll be making updates while I’m in Vegas. Convention related updates will probably be on The Web Files and or WebStyle. If we see any celebrities those posts and hopefully photos will be on Celebrity Scoop. Any really cool photos that I take while in Vegas will be on Breath of Life and of course the cool stuff about meeting up with blogging friends and the awe of seeing Vegas for the first time will probably be posted here. Hopefully I’ll always have a good internet connection!

Ok that’s all for now! If all goes well I’ll write from the airport or shortly after we get to Las Vegas.
