Hump day – how’s your week going so far?

July 23, 2008 by Tricia

It’s already the middle of the week and I feel like I haven’t managed to get anything done yet!

I always seem to feel terrible with my Crohn’s but the past two or three weeks have been really bad and it just seems to be getting worse. The minute I wake up I’m in pain and sometimes the pain in my abdomen even wakes me from a deep sleep. All day every day I’m in pain. It dies down a little now and then, but then it seems to come back with a vengeance.

The fevers have been really bad lately too. It seems that when the pain is at it’s worst I usually don’t have a fever, but then once the pain dies down a bit the fever perks up and of course the fevers leave me feeling washed out and shaky – shivering or too warm depending whether the fever is starting or beginning to go away. I think I’m starting to get an idea of what menopause must be like for some women. BTW the fevers and chills I’ve been experiencing are definitely not menopause. I’m too young for it and it’s been ruled out by a few doctors … it’s just a multitude of low grade fevers each day caused by the Crohn’s – yet another lovely symptom. I probably have an abscess somewhere in my abdomen although they haven’t been able to find it yet (they have searched! believe me they’ve searched!).

I seem to finally be in a mood to write, so I’m just going with it. Actually we’ve had a lot of weird weather here this past week and we’re expecting severe thunder storms so I’m trying to get as much writing done as I can before the storm starts just in case the power goes out yet again.

On Sunday we started having power failures. It began at 3 in the morning for an hour and then we had three more power failures throughout Sunday morning. Then on Monday we had a two hour outage in the morning. Nothing to do with storms.

I still don’t know why we had so many power failures. I know there was a fire in the area Saturday night and on Sunday morning a huge transformer under an apartment building (a fair distance away from where I live) exploded leaving 900 apartment dwellers homeless … but I don’t think either of those things would affect the power in my immediate area.

Yesterday a big truck knocked down the power line that goes over the street just a few houses away from us, surprisingly not causing a power failure in our home. However it did cause the street to be blocked up by police and hydro trucks for a while. One of our neighbors was moving out of her house at the same time so there was a big uHaul and an American Van Lines truck taking up our whole side of the street. This was at the same time that the Power people and the police were blocking off part of the traffic on the street so it was a mad house around here!

Well I guess for a sickie I’ve had a lot of things going on in my immediate neighborhood to keep me occupied. Life is never boring around here and I’m thankful for that!

So how has your week been going? Are you glad the week is half over or are you just cruising through without a care?

I feel like crap, absolute crap

July 8, 2008 by Tricia

I’m in so much pain tonight. Well … really for the last week or so. Remember last week I gushed about eating fresh corn on the cob and how rare it was for me to eat it because it usually caused my Crohn’s to flare up? Yeah, well … I bought six cobs so that means we ate corn three times last week. That was at least two times too many for me.

I knew the corn would do me in, but sometimes you just gotta do it. I’ve certainly been paying for eating it the last few days.

Today I’ve had a lot of fevers. Not great when it’s super hot outside, but you know I had such a high fever when I took the dog outside for a pee at about 4 pm that the slight breeze that was hitting me made me shiver.

I shouldn’t have been shivering outside today, it was damn hot! When I was shivering outside with a fever it was 29 Celsius (84 F) and with the humidity it supposedly felt like 38 Celsius (100.4 F). Ridiculous eh?

I feel bad since it’s Chris’ birthday today. I’m sitting here like a lump when we should be celebrating.

Well, hopefully I feel better tomorrow. Chris won tickets two weeks ago for subscribing to the Danforth Music Hall’s newsletter. They give away free tickets each month to their newsletter subscribers – well to one lucky subscriber each month, I mean. So tomorrow night we’re going to see Amos Lee. He’s supposed to be a great musician however I’m not certain that I’ve ever heard any of his songs. It’s a good venue though and it will be a great thing to go out and do for Chris’ birthday.

So wish me luck that I feel better tomorrow!

Exhausting day

June 24, 2008 by Tricia

Well I finally got around to going the family doctor early today for a physical. I’ve been so sick the last two years that she didn’t really insist on giving me an annual physical until now. I mean, at one point I was seeing my doctor about every two weeks! Considering that I was also seeing a number of other specialists regularly at the time it seemed like I was in a doctors office at least twice a week for a while there.

Now normally when I see my family doc I time the appointment for one of the days when my husband doesn’t work until noon so that he can drive me to the docs. I do drive but I don’t drive often anymore because I’m just on too many meds and I don’t feel safe driving with all those drugs on board. Well this week he’s covering someone else’s shift while they are on holidays so I couldn’t work out a ride. So I ended up taking the Subway for the first time in about two years!

The subway is just as bad or perhaps interesting as ever. It was crowded, smelly and stuffy and it took forever to get to the doctors office! I’m used to getting there in 15 minutes but since I decided to take the subway today it took over an hour to get there. Argh. Plus they were doing construction or renovations in one of the buildings near my doctors, maybe putting in CAT6 cables from the looks of it, and I had to go around the area just to get to my docs.

Since I was out so long today the dog was full of energy so when Chris got home from work we decided to take her for a walk together and man that was a workout. She pulls on the leash so hard. She even tired herself out … she’s snoozing on the floor at my feet now.

I’m wiped out now too … maybe I’ll take a nap as well.

Crohn’s disease sucks

June 19, 2008 by Tricia

I’m having one of those weeks where I just don’t feel well pretty much all the time.

Each day seems worse than the last. God, I hate having Crohn’s disease. Most of the time I make the best of it and tolerate this odd painful way of life that I have to live … but weeks or days like this kind of get me down.

The pain in my abdomen and the high pitched sounds that it’s making are tell tale signs that I’ve got another bowel obstruction. So … I’m just trying to drink a lot of liquids today in the hope that it will clear on it’s own. I don’t want to go to the hospital. I really don’t.

She’s dizzy all the time

June 3, 2008 by Tricia

I’ve had a miserable few days or perhaps I should say few weeks. My Crohn’s disease has been acting up and I haven’t slept well for weeks. Well that is, until that last few days at least.

I think my body or brain has finally given in and allowed me to get some sleep over the last few days as I’ve been falling asleep while watching TV with my husband and not waking up until the early morning hours. That’s really unusual for me!

The other strange problem I’ve been having over the last week or so is dizziness. Perhaps it was due to lack of sleep. I certainly couldn’t think of any other reason for it other than perhaps my medications, a virus or low blood pressure. The dizziness was so bad on Sunday that even while lying down I’d get the spins if I’d move my head from side to side. I also had the strange bout of nausea last Tuesday.

I’ll be seeing both my pain doctor and my family doctor in two weeks, but if I continue to have these strange dizzy spells and other symptoms I’ll make an earlier appointment with the family doc.

So if there’s a few gaps in my posts it’s just because I’m not feeling that great. I’m still here, still checking my mail and keeping track of what’s going on.
