Trillium Grandiflora

White Trillium bud

I took this photo a few weeks ago.

This is a trillium flower. The trillium is Ontario’s provincial flower, and Ontario is the Canadian province that I live in. It’s illegal to pick or dig up wild trilliums here. Why? Well, it takes forever for them to grow. They do not reproduce easily.

This of course is a trillium in my garden. It’s not a wild trillium. No, it’s a cultivated or hybrid trillium.

It’s supposed to be white but when it blooms the flowers are a deep maroon, almost brown in fact. Perhaps it was labeled wrong at the nursery and isn’t a true Trillium Grandiflora. I do have photos of it’s bloom but they are still on my camera. I’ll have to upload them to my computer soon!

I enjoy the all of my spring flowers but I think I like the white flowers the best. When it grows dark at night I can still see them glowing white in the garden beds. They highlight other plants through the day, and give them cover as they grow. Beautiful, beautiful white tulips.

I hope to get around to all the Green Thumbers sometime tomorrow. Sorry that this post is late but I’ve had a rough day. It’s almost a new day …

Azalea buds

I just noticed the other day that my Northern Lights Azalea has buds! Yesterday I even noticed that a few of the buds are beginning to open too. In this photo you can see the partially open flowers behind the Azalea buds.

My little Azalea is extremely slow growing. Yes, they are slow growing plants, but I think mine could use a tiny bit more light as it has a rose in front of it that blocks off some of the light the Azalea would get if that rose wasn’t there. I wish when I’d planted the rose and the Azalea that I’d put the azalea ahead of the rose. When the Azalea does finally grow to maturity it should be four feet tall. However, for the past two or so years it’s only been 2 feet tall or less. The rose gets to about 3 feet tall by the end of summer. I may still rearrange these plants.

I got lots of work done in the front flower beds yesterday and of course I took a lot of pictures of the flowers and plants. Hopefully I’ll get some work done in the backyard garden beds later today!

BTW Some people have been asking what kind of camera I’m using, it’s a Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 7.2MP.

Update! I must pay more attention! I knew I was coming up to my 1000th post, but when I wrote this one I didn’t realize that this was it. You see there were no balloons or party noisemakers. So this is it number one thousand. Kind of anti-climatic huh?

Enjoying the bounty of Spring

Daffodil

Daffodil

The daffodils are blooming early this year. Not all of them are up but two types have managed to bloom so far. I think have two or three more varieties that still need to make an appearance.

I’m really enjoying the garden this year. Many of the flowers are blooming early this year. You see I planted some bulbs that bloom early and some that bloom late. Often of the same type – like early, regular and late blooming tulips. This year they seem to be blooming at the same time instead of being spread out over a month to month and a half as they normally do.

Are the spring bulbs still blooming in your garden?

White Tulips

DSC01752 copy

I was out doing my garden rounds on Friday, camera in hand, and I came across these lovely white tulips. I thought that they looks so pretty against the backdrop of our old wooden fence. The petals are so delicate and almost feather like when you look at them closely.

On Monday our weather is set to become much warmer. I believe we’ll start hitting the 70’s or higher consistently, so I must enjoy my spring flowers as much as possible because once it really warms up they will disappear quickly.
